Skateboarding is about redefinition of temporal surroundings that have been created to restrict you. It's about transcending restrictions in ways so creative that your captors could not have predicted how to maintain control of the individual.
Yes! This! It's almost a dada-esque rejection of the intended use of our surroundings. Turning things meant for safety (handrails), relaxation (benches), obstruction (poles, fences, gates), swimming (pools) into a canvas for high risk performance art. Of course we have loads of fun doing it, and it might not be a conscious intention, but the action itself is an act of rejection and redefinition. The shift in the mind to see these things as skateboarders do is huge, but so intrinsic to the skateboard culture, we rarely realize this. We're just having fun. But in the end, the shift is still there and it has effect on more than just the act of skateboarding. It's not a coincidence that so many skateboarders work in creative arts and music. Maybe you can even link it to rejection of society's expectations.
Just want to personally thank the dudes at Six Stair and Grosso for taking the time to make all these episodes. Skateboarding is something you can't describe with one word. It's a feeling, way of life, and something that can change your mood from depressed to on top of the world. Been watching the show for a while now and I'm really grateful that these dudes dig for hours for these clips of Phillips, photos of bowman, Tex Gibson and all the dudes that made it their own. I'm especially grateful cause I didn't get to live through this time. In my opinion the best times of skateboarding. And I'm 21. But skateboarding is so rad and it's an international language. Everyone has their own language in skating and we all get stoked when we see someone who speaks our language. And if you're wondering if people even get stoked when they watch your show...they do. skateboarding is balance. You balance on a wheel, on a truck ,on a board, and then on a transition or what have you, and walla you are living a trifecta or more of balance even the overlords have no concept of, and scientist are just amazed. Balance is a Law which the whole Universe rides on, and it smiles on us cause we get, the whole entire vast situation is under our feet

I went there and was chilling next to him and just Finished a beer. I stomp it and Q goes "you're not from around here huh" I was like no I'm not. He's like around here we don't smash cans can't get no money for them like that. I uncrumpled the can and gave it to him and he was like I can tell you're skate army man get in there. Pat Quirk is a pre Burnside Seattle area head collecting hub caps allow the I-5 corridor on his board. Ramp at moms house from 1986, skating "the Bone" ditch even before that. Early NW Zorlac crue with Aaron Deiter, Ryan Monihan, Chad Vogt, Wez Lundry, Andy "the 5", Scott Smiley, Monk, and eventually hooked up with the infamous Mark "Red" Scot to make the Portland/Burnside scene happen for Halloween 1991 after City skate sucked and went under. These guys made the Original make it, skate it, never ask for permission and so force acceptance through commitment and drive possible around the country and now the world. Credit for fueling the rots of a cement revolution through sweat and hand carried cement bags. Grindline et. al. What a tapestry of commitment to freedom!!!! Thank you skateboarding from the 1980's and those who made something from nothing. All my old guys are still out there somewhere, but their memory keeps me fighting the body breakdown and keeps me pushing for 50 with a few tricks up my sleeve, but more importantly an awareness of how learning to skate taught me to learn how to learn anything! Skating with friends is by far the best part. In the last 3 years I have been skating alone and meeting new people in my area so mostly I do skate soli and it can suck tbh. But I still keep the spirit of m thg skate homies alive in my skating. Or.. i crash and burn fucking trying
this video changed the way i see life on my board i used to be scared to bust my ass but what pat said about paying my dues made me realize to shred the gnar i must be the gnar and constantly try things above my ability until i finally ride away

Yes Jeff, we are still watching. I use to go to Skatercross in Reseda, Marina & Del Mar too, but the RTD didn't go to Marina or Del Mar (I don't think) so growing up, skating in The Valley, I love to see all the people you have on. All us old farts that never grew up and still love the same stuff we loved when we were 13, ya know. Your commentary is harsh at times, but usually right on the money and funny. How can we take ourselves too seriously if we call ourselves skateboarders. We are the roots of this thing. It's up to us to share our story, and show these kids that there's more than one version of this. I don't want to drop any names (Rob Dcough cough) but some people want to act like it's all about getting paid and doing the "hardest trick" whatever that is, is what counts the most. It's great that some people can make a living at it now, but it's not a sport that's going to get you a scholarship. It's should be about having fun, with your friends hopefully, first. All that other stuff, like sponsorships and contests with big prize money are just icing on the cake. IMO no one should get into skating because they think they will make good money at it, or even a living. You can achieve that but it shouldn't be your only goal. Then again it should be whatever you want it to be. But fun needs to be in the mix or why bother. And your show reminds us of all the fun it can be. Now I need to limp to the bathroom because I herniated myself riding. Ok, it's fun and painful.

Overcoming fear & building self worth, self esteem, & confidence. The 1st time I axle dropped into Geoff Scofields 9' backyard halfpipe (aka "The Pain Ramp" per Kelly Belmar bcuz of Whittiers limited freeway access) my legs were shaking uncontrollably & I lucked out bcuz I barely bent my knees!
Bro seining Pat Clark just shocked my world. The man taught me how to skate growing up as he lived down the road. He had a nice mini ramp and would still shred never really realized how far back in the culture he went until I saw him here on grossos love letters ❤️
Wow, two minutes into the episode and I really like Tony Hawk's answer, man... It was at the tip of his tongue, and he's absolutely right about not only that, but a lot of stuff. Inspiring to see someone into his 50's talking that confidently about that. This series is fucking good, I have been sleeping on it for not watching before. Thank you for putting Grosso as the host, he brings raw honesty out of people.
Philosophy Of Skateboarding: The caveman wakes up from a quiet nights sleep. His wife had gathered the straw that made his bed and she is particularly talented at spotting the best bed straw. After eating whatever was left in the fire pit from the night before, he finishes putting the final touches on the set up of his new spear. That afternoon while hunting he spots an elk. He calls his buddy over. His buddy shakes his head - "too far" and walks away without sound. His friend did not realize that shaft of his new spear was formed from a special tree and he had figured out how to notch the shaft a certain way so that the spear spins in flight. The flint that formed the spear's head had a blue green shimmer that he liked without knowing why. The caveman sights his line. Breathing deep and with a quick exhale, he throws his spear. Later, as the sun kissed the mountain tops, a soft orange glow flooded the small smokey village. A celebration was underway due to the grand success of the hunting party. Grabbing her hand amongst the din of excitement the caveman leaves early without notice, leading his wife back to their dwelling. Any boy who would come upon their tracks would instantly know the joviality of their pace as well as their cardinal intentions. During their love making, he was filled with an energy he had never felt before. It was the the Elk Spirit granting him forgiveness. That night they conceived twins whom both, before reaching adulthood, became master weapon makers and hunters.
In the 80s the underlying philosophy was a cure for boredom,an escape from reality, fun and an adrenaline rush. After knee surgery in 87 I switched to stand-up jetskis in the surf(freeriding). The same philosophy. I gave the jetskis up in 08 for financial reasons. I switched back to skateboarding but no vertical(street ditch riding). The philosophy has dramatically changed though. Now it's a necessary antidepressant that I can't seem to do without.
I would have to agree on pain being the underlining philosophy as even when your in the zone and tearing spots up you will always be hurting and your bones will constantly be aching and your muscles will be wanting to give out
My very first pro or 'real' deck was a Losi. It had been ran over and put back together with 4 metal plates/strips, 2 on the bottom and 2 on the top, and I was fucking stoked!
my philosophy of skateboarding is to have fun challenge those around you to push them and your self to new hights and skating isnt the same if youre not with friends
It’s a sport that celebrates and encourages individuality above conformity; where you can have the same amount of fun trying to master the most basic of the basic tricks as the seasoned pro who’s mastered most everything, including the most difficult tricks.
Grosso RIP For me skating has always been about taking a left turn when all the others are going right. It’s about no coaches, no scores, no teams. It’s just you and the ride. It’s you vs yourself. The only one you need to prove anything to is yourself. Then there’s aspect of running with the pack, the crew, the boys, the pals. Just you and one friend out bombing around late night in empty streets. Or a whole pack on some ramp in the woods, in the barn, in the back yard. Howling. Just getting each other more stoked. It’s about that loner dude you see on the edge of town board sliding a curb he waxed. And knowing you can instant buds not even knowing names. Because you’re brothers. Short term bonding. Or hanging with dudes you’ve skated with for 25 years. Faces coming and going. It’s about that first time you land a trick. Or seeing some kid ollie off a curb and you’re just as stoked as seeing the neighborhood legend kick flip the big 8 at the school. It’s about getting hurt and getting up and trying again and again and again. And it ain’t for the coaches, the spectators, the girls(betties rule though), it’s for you. You did it for you. It’s about never forgetting the first deck you ever got. That sound of rolling thunder down the street. The smell of wet asphalt, blood, road rash, busted knees, tweaked ankles. But yeah, end of the day. It’s about good old fashioned hard won, right down the street, back in the alley, behind the grocery store, on that slab of concrete you find in the country, under the bridge, down in the drainage ditch, good clean fuckin FUN!!!
The Underlying Philosophy of Skateboarding is the SURF FEELING, standing sideways and the varied sensations this gives in turning right and left. The sense of freedom, being carried forward, floating over the elements. But much easier accessible than surfing or snowboarding. The tricks and risk-taking is secondary, but is not really the soul of skateboarding; although it may lead to increased sense of freedom, if you master big airs for instance.

I think the underlying philosophy of skateboarding is to "find your bliss," as Joseph Campbell used to say. Everyone has their own different path to what makes them happiest and fulfilled. Unfortunately, many of us never find it because we become too caught up living up to the expectations of our parents, our teachers, our community, our society, and trying to become financially secure. Some people tend to focus less on those demands and try to follow what actually makes them happy. I think people who skate tend to be these types of people. These types of people may also be surfers or artists or musicians, etc. That is to say, following one's bliss is not unique to skateboarding --but it tends to be a common denominator among skaters. That's my 2¢

Skateboarding is about pushing the limits of fun, pain, creativity, learning, friendship and fear.
The Underlying Philosophy of Skateboarding is the SURF FEELING, standing sideways and the varied sensations this gives in turning right and left. The sense of freedom, being carried forward, floating over the elements. But much easier accessible than surfing or snowboarding. The tricks and risk-taking is secondary, but is not really the soul of skateboarding; although it may lead to increased sense of freedom, if you master big airs for instance.
That "Fuck you, I'm going to do what I want where I want" was what was in my mind.
Still watching, and still skateboarding 30 years later ; )

I think the underlying philosophy of skateboarding is to "find your bliss," as Joseph Campbell used to say. Everyone has their own different path to what makes them happiest and fulfilled. Unfortunately, many of us never find it because we become too caught up living up to the expectations of our parents, our teachers, our community, our society, and trying to become financially secure.
Some people tend to focus less on those demands and try to follow what actually makes them happy. I think people who skate tend to be these types of people. These types of people may also be surfers or artists or musicians, etc. That is to say, following one's bliss is not unique to skateboarding --but it tends to be a common denominator among skaters.
