Scored one for 100 bucks on ebay! That little pathfinder sounded best of any of the small amps I saw for the price, so I know this learning toy will melt my butter!
Wish I'd done a better job with this video. It really is an amazing package for editing your Vox sounds. I'm getting better and better with my editing. You'll make great sounds. TLG
Seriously Tony, this helped me a lot- I was stuck between this and the Blackstar ID TVP series but I think the Vox Tone Room software looks more user friendly than the Blackstar Insider. Thanks again man and keep rockin!
Thing that will surprise you is how different other guitars sound with this baby. A strat or tele responds totally different to the processing. It's great with any guitar. Have fun with that amp buddy. It will inspire you. Again - thanks for the comment.
You are the only person I know who plays Cliffs of Dover better than you play Sweet Child of Mine. That's like driving a Formula One race car better than a mini van.
Ha - Guess I like Eric a lot better than I like Slash. I think I spent a week studying Cliffs way back, but like 2 minutes learning SCOM. Great comment.
@@vectortonto1 Guess I'd go with the VT40X so I'd have a little more volume when I'm jamming with friends. If you're mic'ing the 20X though, it would still work live. I've played out with both amps, and the 40X gives you more headroom if you're not mic'ing up.
I purchased one of these VT20X as a new guitarist because I was using the Fender Mustang 1 V2 and was totally disappointed with the purchase that it is now on Craigslist, now I'm using and enjoying the Vox every time I practice! Great little amp at a pretty reasonable price, I purchase mine locally at The Music Farm in Canton, Ohio after listening to a customer service guy play it for me.
Tony, your videos convinced me I wanted to check out the VT20X. I went to the shop yesterday and demoed it, a katana 50 mk2 and a champion 40, the VOX came home with me. I like the layout and the adjustability with out hooking it up to a PC. I also like that I can turn off all of the effects, add a little gain with some spring reverb and just enjoy the sweet sounds of my not so great playing. LOL. Thanks for your great videos Tony, you have a new subscriber.
Hey Steve. You know - I have a lot of amps to mess with these days, and the VT20X is still the one I plug into the most. Just so much fun and simplicity - and killer tone. So glad you got one brother! It's hard to beat for the studio. I even gigged with it a couple times in a three-piece band with a loud drummer. I had to push it harder than I normally do, but danged if it didn't still hold its own! Party crowd of about 50 folks said it sounded great and wasn't lost in the madness! You made a good choice!
I just got mine and really am loving it. At first was skeptical cus I HATE modeling amps but I needed something due to having to Live in an apartment and sadly can't play my rectifier. I was honestly blown away by how good this thing sounds and how affordable it is and so I pulled the trigger and am loving it. The pre amp tube is what drew me in at first while looking for a cheap quite modeling amp. I love tubes and can't go back to pure solid state. I have yet to try the "Tone room" feature so thanks for the video.
Ordered my amp earlier, can't wait to get it. Appreciate this video, I'm downloading Tone Room now. Who knows how long I would have had the amp without knowing this was a thing.
Thanks Tony! It's a cool and fabulous demo! I bought this combo amp last month in Taiwan, and I have to say this is really a worth buying amp. The sound is great, and the modeling is awesome. By changing the bias and class of tube output, it is easy to change the "feels" of sound.
I have been looking at video reviews of this amp for over an hour now, and I enjoyed yours 10 to 1 more than any other one. You’re relaxed, not trying to stroke your ego, just checking out the tones by picking through some tunes relevant to the settings. I don’t know why people think that an ‘amp review’ should be them running 64th note arpeggios. The only person that helps is themselves and their egos. Having said that, you’re absolutely a great guitarist and it’s beyond obvious you love music and the guitar. Also, it’s awesome to click on a video and hear someone speaking with the same accent as me! I don’t know what part of the southeast you’re from but I’m from the southwestern part of Virginia, and I’d guarantee you’re originally from VA, TN, or NC. Either way, you absolutely gained a new subscriber today!
Bless you for that nice comment Robbie. Yes - I'm from the highlands of Western, NC - a place called Little Switzerland, but I live in the foothills now. Never tried to change my accent like some people. That is a cool amp - especially for the price. I'm taking it to a party and jamming with friends tomorrow night. It's the perfect amp for small gigs/practice and recording. Thanks for saying I'm a good guitarist, but that's barely true. I used to be pretty good, but now that I'm old and busy I don't get much time to practice. Again, appreciate your comment!
Great Demonstration!! I just bought the vt40x after trying out the Fender Mustang series. No comparison. I just wish Vox would publish a list of the songs the "tone room" attempts to mimic. Great video!
deadlydude I'm getting the Vox VT40X as well. I'll be ordering it next week when I get paid. I've been looking all over online and I can't find anywhere how to connect an Android device to use the tone room app. Judging by the usb port on the amp it is only able to connect to a pc by cable. Have you managed to figure it out
just bought one of these amps and have been blown away with all the tone room stuff,,,purple rain is spot on for tone,,,i thought there was enough on the amp to keep me happy then plugged in the tone room of my iphone and could hardly believe there was so much more and you can save them to the main presets also,,,,just so much value for moneymmmthanks for the post ,,,cheers from australia nice playing too
Bought the vt40x and.. Wow. Vox really nailed it. For those who might not know, there's a Facebook page for these.. They share settings, real amps names etc
I was surprised how loud it is. When I first got it and went to jam with my buddies,I cranked it halfway and was delighted it kept up with the volume of the drummer
OMG. You totally sold me on this amp. I’m going to get one this weekend. My mind is blown. Cliffs of Dover Rock this Town. Pride and Joy. So many sounds! Thanks for posting this.
I have mine on order to pick up next week. I have watched every video I can find and each time I get more excited for this amp! I think i'll have as much fun as you!
I just ordered one to use in the studio. After looking at several different reviews, I'm convinced this will be easier than lugging different amps, processors, and pedalboards in and out.
I think you'll really be impressed by what you get with this amp J.R. - especially for the price. Be sure to take a laptop or mobile device with you to sessions. It's great to be able to tweak the settings with the cool GUI. Really sweet sounding low-cost amp.
Thanks Tony, been watching 100's of videos to research my next amp but your video game me the missing info I needed to make my decision. I will be buying this little gem. great work my friend - thumbs up from me :)
Love it! That thing sounds freaking great! And I about fell out of my chair when you broke out the Green Day and Nirvana. You never cease to amaze me, Tony! Great vid!
ha! I think I've trained everyone to believe I can play Nothing But The Blues. The truth is I've played in bands that play Smithereens, Better Than Ezra, Collective Soul, Green Day, Third Eye Blind, and many other bands of that variety.
GREAT REVIEW I played 40 years, i have my Marshall, Fender tube Beasts, but i bought one of these for my small, knock around amp, living room box. for $80 used, didnt even plug it in, saw the price and features, bought it OMG I LOVE IT. Was BLOWN AWAY by the , everything ! lol, funny, it even looks good in the living room ! never cared about an amps looks, but hey, it looks kinda classy. lol if any of you folks find one cheap, get it !
Thanks for this Tony. First review I've seen of this amp where someone has gone through the software showing how to pull up amps and add pedals effects n all.
Wow, great showcase of the software! Like you said, not a lot of coverage of this software on TH-cam, unfortunately, so I'm so glad I found your video. Now I really want to try it out, it looks so fun, and not to mention user friendly. I bought the 100wt's a couple of weeks ago and I must say, couldn't be more happy with the amp. I tried it out in the store, but it didn't do the Vox justice, only after a couple of minutes of trying. I thought: "Hey! It sounds decent enough" And was the lucky winner of my music equipment budget, that day. Boy, was I so wrong! Or not wrong, per say, But I really underestimated this little beast. I was blown away by the sheer amount of quality, content and easy to use interface, and of course, the sound. For me, the manual was so helpful in getting me started with the unfamiliar setup, and made "playing ready" after more or less 15 minutes, maybe? All in all, I must say, totally worth the money and gotta be my best investment this year! For the VOX! Cheers!
Thanks for the input here Ash. Yes - this is one of the best sounding and easy to use amps on the market, and the Toneroom software allows for easy programming of limitless sounds. I bought the 40 watt version too - so I'd have a bit more punch when I play gigs. These amps are just great.
Tony I “bought the amp vt40x from Bax music who presented as a uk company (brexit extra costs now) any way it didn’t arrive I contacted them and they are in Eindhoven Holland and they have no idea when my amp will arrive looks like they’ve done this before and I have to start saving up again. (Pensioner Uk,poor) 4months I saved for this amp. So please warn folk “Bax music” apparently this is common for this firm I since found out. I’ll get one by the Summer hopefully. Beaut sound . Top review.
Thank you very much for this review, had a jam on one of these in my local music planet and your review has made me even more into the idea of purchasing this model, liked and subed :)
I just bought the 40 watt version. Waiting for my USB adapters to arrive so I can use the iPhone Tone Room app. I've watched your demons dozen time. Love your video.
Great informative video! ( I like your music room also).. I actually think this Tone room software may be easier to use than Fenders "Fuse" editing software . I'm going the simple route and getting a Vox AV15, A tube, presets and great sounds. I've always liked The Vox sound.
THIS VIDEO is EXACTLY what I have been searching for....Personally I found the "user's manual" for this amp pretty useless and frankly confusing. This amp is SOOOOO versatile but also somewhat DAUNTING in trying to figure out all of its capabilities which seem endless. So...I decided to re-read the manual and specifically I was looking for info on how to EDIT the sounds and SAVE them....I learned very quickly that I needed to download the "sound room" in order to TRULY get a handle on figuring out what this amp is capable of. THIS video helped me figure out how to call up a whole BEVY of different sounds which is great.....HOWEVER, I'm STILL at a bit of a loss insofar as SAVING them so that they are readily available ON THE AMP. (and in particular using the footswitch which I ALSO purchased. I feel like ANOTHER video might help in this regard???)
Hey Dennie - I've been planning to revisit the Tone Room editor for a long time. My life is just crazy busy with day to day work. I'll see what I can do about getting a new vid out. Yours is an awesome suggestion. It's pretty easy to save the patches. I'll let you know when i get the new vid posted. TLG
You deserve more than a like for being the video to explore the vox toneroom sadly I can only subscribe and I hope your store weathers the pandemic and all goes well
I’ve really enjoyed your videos on the VOX vt40x , which inspired me to purchase a vt100x , I’m waiting for my Apple camera adapter to arrive so haven’t been able to play around with tone room so I’m curious are you able to stack reverb pedals or delay pedals and are you able to use other software such as strymon’s plugins they offer on their website?
Hey - the VT40x that I have is very structured with effects. You can definitely do delay and reverb, but not multiple reverbs. There's no effects loop, so innovative effects chaining isn't the strong suit with this amp. The main strength is just great sounding tube-type amp gain that is hard to beat at this price. What it does is amazing - but not necessarily because of the effects. Be sure to experiment with the noise reduction. It's nice and natural and really helps with your high-gain presets.
Great video, someone trying to get Eric Johnson down, you've given me hope that if I sat down for days I might get close,. This thing does come packed with a lot of tones & they sound pretty close to those songs. I looked this up because its the day before Thanksgiving & I was looking on Facebook market place & someone has one for sell close to me. Great job, not having to go out & buy a dumble or other expensive amp to get close to some of these great tones is wonderful. Thanks Tony Great Playing!!
I sure do appreciate your comment James. I wish I really could play like Eric Johnson. I used to try to learn some of his stuff but never could quite get there. You'll love that amp if you get it. It's pretty darn loud too. Maybe not loud enough to gig with unless you Mike it. But you'll be surprised it really is a great piece of gear.
Great review. Just bought one of these and hoping that tone room is still available to be used. Thanks Tony. Don’t know how you remember to play all those songs!
Ha - I barely remember how to play ANY song these days. Yes Tim, that's a great amp. Tone room is a cool program. I think it's still available for download.
Great video. Any thoughts on making a brief 'how-to' using the Tone Room software with the amp? (saving your custom tones to one of the presets, stuff like that?) I know I've been searching for a decent manual on it since I got this amp a few weeks ago, with no luck. Looks like Vox/Vavletronix does not have a comprehensive manual from what I can see. If I am missing it, please share a link :)
Tony, LOVE your playing and I really appreciate your gear reviews! Question: as a new player with a limited budget, which amp would you purchase - the Vox VT40X or the Katana 50? I'm interested in learning to play blues / rock, and David Gilmour tones in particular. I'm playing a MIM Strat with CS '69 pickups. Thanks for your insight!
Both great amps. I might give the edge to the Katana because of flexibility with the effects. But I do prefer the tube sounds for overdrive that you get with the vox amp. you might be able to get a better David gilmour sound with the vox. But you might find that you have a fuller range of tones with the katana. Really hard call.
Tony, I have vt40x, bought the adapter, followed the instructions, (I think). I downloaded toneroom to my ipad. When I click on any of the amps or presets in the app, nothing changes.
Are any of the app sounds non-Vox classic sounding? Ie, are there plug-in sounds which are reminiscent of Marshall or Fender amps? Or is everything on the app shop all VOX sounding plug-ins that are mimicking VOX classics?
It does a pretty decent job of modeling Fender, Mesa Boogie, Marshall and Orange. The tube creates the overdrive and the bias can be switched in many interesting ways. I love this amp.
@@tonyleeglenn Absolutely, brother. Your honest excitement about the features of the product you're reviewing could not possibly be contrived and should never be muted. You're like the difference between the "critical review" of a movie and the "audience review." You're obviously the audience review in this scenario, but I typically agree more frequently with the audience than the critics. Keep on keepin' on, Tony Lee!
It really is a sweet amp. Thanks for your comment Jess. Also thanks for the comment about my playing. I really don't think I'm that good. It's cool that someone like you said something nice about it though.
Tony, where did you buy your mini usb connector to run from the amp to your pc? I'm just wondering if I have a bad adapter. I'm trying to run toneroom on my gen 2 ipad and I keep getting a message Target not connected.
Hey - I just use a standard USB2 mini cable to a hub that goes straight into my PC. Maybe I'm just lucky, but I've never had any problems. Connects right up every time.
+Mission Heart News By any chance is that a Fender Mustang in the background on the very right side of the video? If yes, could you please give me a second opinion that the VOX would be more versatile amp (for the Mustang I won't have any chance to check in live but the VOX I will try out when I buy). If that is not a Mustang then just ignore my comment :) Edit. I just see the comment is from...Mission Heart News?
+atomeec Hey brother - sorry for the Mission Heart thing (I was logged into the wrong channel when I responded). Yes that is a Fender Mustang in the back - also a great amp, but not nearly the equal of the VOX VT20X. I'll do some A/B comparisons and share a video with you about how they differ. One thing I do like better about the Fender software is that it has a great tuner built in, but Tone Room from Vox doesn't. Will send you a video link when I have the comparison.
+Tony Lee Glenn I thought so that is also you. As I checked a lot of youtube videos about the Mustang, the Fender emulations are very nice however the rest is not so convincing. If you would do even a very short comparison I would be really thankful. Already I am :)
+atomeec Hey brother. It might be later this weekend before I can show you a comparison, but you might want to go ahead and watch this demo in the mean-time. It's about an Oscar Schmidt guitar I reviewed, but I play all the sounds through the Fender Mustang. They sound great. I'll say this, the reverbs and other effects on the Fender may be just as good or better than the VOX. I just think the overdrives are at least 20% better on the VOX. See what you think: th-cam.com/video/d5lmVVTZcYE/w-d-xo.html
So I've had a vox Vt20x and it's been losing volume if and when I touch the volume or gain etc when it's in the effects mode. It's all great other than having to keep messing with volume. I hope I didnt get a bad one.
That cliffs of Dover was awesome. I’m seriously considering buying this amp. But I don’t know where I lie in terms of style yet. I’m still a newbie after 15 years. I’m a bit worried this amp won’t be in the right place for Metallica and some other bands that play quite heavy.
Hello Tony. Have just watched your TH-cam demo for the SECOND time and read all the comments again. This has swayed me toward a VTX for sure. One question: In the FX section, what would you do if you wanted, say, Chorus AND Compression active at the same time?! It doesn't look possible with Tone Room...
Thanks for such a quick reply! OK, so I'm stuck now... I've used Fender's Fuse on a Mustang Mini and a Champ XD and am amazed at how many FX you can program and save on any one Amp Model. I've been thinking of trading the Mustang Mini toward either a Mustang II or, now, a Vox VTX. Stuck between a rock and a hard place here...
Well, you see, I did read about the Katana and thought the slew of FX it has was AWESOME! Then I tried one in the store, and the sound didn't thrill me enough to buy the amp. For whatever it's worth I guess I'm a Fender amp guy... However, your VTX review of the Vox's sounds and Tone Room is one of several on TH-cam that made me wanna go out and actually try one of these VTX's ~ they SOUND great!
Hey Tony, just wanted to say Thanks. Found a used VT40X last Friday and brought it home. This amp has blown me away several times with its tones! Now I just have to fully learn the amp and how Tone Room works with it!
Tony... if Your Interested I took the Motherboard out of my VT and put it in a Hughes and Kettner 1X12 V30 with a Tung-sol 12Ax7... A Must Try... Troy from Atlantic City
Great video.. Funny I still find the original VT series (the ones with the metal front plate) sound better than the newer ones especially if you crank the master and use the attenuator on the back for volume.
I've recently tried the Android App Voxtoneroom and wow. I am now feeling as you did here. Lolololol Good vid as I've watched it most of any TH-cam ...lately. Lol
Hey Tony, just out of curiousity, did you try the LIne 6 Spider V, or the Mustang GT AMP. It looks like the Vox is the amp to get. I was going to get the Fender Mustang VII.
I have two of the Mustang series amps from about 5 years ago. I love them, and the software to edit is better than the Vox setup. I still like the sound of the Vox a bit better. I haven't tried the Spider V, but I used to own a Spider II. I liked it a lot for the time. I guess I should get out to the stores and try a few of these newer amps so I can comment intelligently.
Yes - It plugs in via a USB2 cord and you can pull up the software editor and make changes. You can then transfer all the amp models you create to the amp. It's very cool.
Hey Tony! Thank you very much for answering. Hope I am not bothering you too much for the many questions. I hear alot of good things about the portable amp, the Yamaha THR10. Have you tried this amp?
Really cool video and having just purchased one my self i also have found myself loosing hours to all the preset sounds in the tone room. its so good. just one question... have you figured out to set any sounds you make yourself to the channels i have tried a few things and its not quite working although i have saved my sounds i have made. Many thanks
Hello Tony it's me again, one short question, since the fender update lt25 with connection with pc, because it's the pretty much same price range, what you will be suggest between this two? Thanks in advance
I love them both for different reasons. Maybe I could do a video to explain. I currently have both of them hooked up with a switchblade splitter so I can make stereo patches - the Vox on the left and the Fender on the right.
I just picked up this amp but it’s not connecting through the usb cord I am using. I am using a MacBook Pro. I downloaded the software just fine. Still have to do some work figuring it out but so far it’s been fun trying to figure it out. Debating wether I should get the foot switch or wait. I will have to watch some more of your videos, you seem like a likeminded music lover.
Try a different USB cord. Seems like I had trouble getting it to connect with a certain cord that I had and then just switched the cord and it was OK. Many thanks for watching the video. You’ve bought an excellent amp.
Hey Tony I managed to pick one of these bad boys for just over $100 used what an amp, I know in latter videos you mention the BOSS Katana which I was thinking , I have been testing small amps in the last year coupled with countless You Tube videos but in terms of tone and sound, for me the Vox VT 20 X has the edge over BOSS I would not say massive but more natural sounding features wise yes the BOSS has that edge, but I was just like you with the tone room that has fun written all over it,
Hey Brian - thanks for the comment. Yes - I prefer the overdrive sound of the little tube in the VT20X. Really great to have all those effects in the Katana. Too bad there's not (yet) an amp that delivers both.
So are you plugging the amp into the interface? If so please share as that question brought me to this video but was only covered for like .1 of a micro second
Yes - just direct into my iMac with a Focusrite Scarlett. Here are litterally thousands of micro seconds showing how I do it! th-cam.com/video/_O7xFcYfDLY/w-d-xo.html
This really is a very good amp. Disclaimer: The following is my "opinion." : ) For practice amps, I can compare it to the Mustang ii v2 and the Blackstar ID:15TVP. It sounds much better than the Fender and I think it edges out the Blackstar, which is also a decent amp. The Mustang has more editing options, and you can record from USB if you desire, but just doesn't sound as good, even after getting past the learning curve for their editing software. The Blackstar has a very unique "design your own amp" approach and sounds very good. I prefer the Vox, though. It sounds great, the editing software is decent, and they have iOS support which works with my iPod Touch 5G. The Vox actually comes with good presets and I'm finding it easy to tweak to get really good tones. The Vox ~may~ be a bit noisier than the other amps if you're boosting the signal into the amp (hot pickups and/or pedals). Thanks for posting the video.
+Russell Brown You've made a great contribution to this thread Russell. I have the Mustang I, and you're on the money about the sound and editing. The Mustang is a great little amp, but the VOX sounds are superior with the smooth tube overdrives. I've not used the Blackstar, but have played through at few at Guitar Center. I just fell in love with the VT20X - enough so that I want the VT100X for a gigging amp. It's so affordable and sounds terrific. Thanks for watching this video and commenting! TLG
Have you noticed any hum on the Valvetronix? My VT20X gives off a pretty good hum. Seems to go away if I touch any of the metal on my Tele (cord sheath or the volume control) or my computer if I have it plugged in. I have a humbucker in so that shouldn't be the problem. I've tried several guitars and different cords and it's the same. Just wondering if you encountered any of that. Thanks.
I've encountered zero hum or noise . . . except when I play near certain monitors I use with my main recording PC. So there can be an interference problem with some displays I guess. I fixed the issue by recording with my laptop or my iMac, which seem to cause no interference at all. Interesting you are experiencing this problem with a tele. My American tele is the only guitar I've had any noise issues with. Maybe its something in the tele wiring too? Mine is an '89 American telecaster. Otherwise, whisper quiet unless I have the gain cranked very high.
Hmm. Well, alright. Looks like I'll just call Vox and see what they can do about it. I've only had it for a few days so hopefully I can get it taken care of. Thanks for the info!
LoganTGray I just recorded a new vid I'll put out tomorrow night where I played my Modern Players Tele through probably 20 different settings on the Vox and no hum - even in front of my problematic display. Maybe something is wrong with your amp/guitar compatibility.Mystery?
I had a hum when connected with my computer, but I scrapped the cheap 3.5mm cable and purchased a braided metal sheathed Sentey cable, and now no more hum whatsoever.
Hello! My name is Igor. Recently bought a vox vt 40 x combo. Connected to the computer through the tone room program. He began to create his own presets and met with difficulties. I was able to save only those that are stored in banks preset on the combo. I tried to save the presets on the computer, the file name of the created preset is written, but there is no way to open it for playback. Could you explain to me what I'm doing wrong? Thanks!!! Respectfully!!
Awesome video, I've had this amp for a few months now but haven't really played with it too much. Do you have a video on how to save presets? Thanks man!
Hey Mike. Just whatever cable will give you a USB mini on the VOX end. It has a USB (type b) mini female input on the top left. See the specs at www.voxamps.com/VT40X
Can you tell me how can I connect my vox vt40x to a MacBook via USB to record on Logic Pro? I’ve been looking everywhere but I can't find any information about it 😕
Hey Angel. That one is a 2008 Gibson Les Paul Studio with Classic 57 humbuckers. I only have two "high-end" electrics (if you can call them that). One is the LP Studio, and the other is a 1989 American Telecaster. All the rest of mine are affordable guitars.
Update : To all having connectivity issues with the Tone Room " Device not connected " when I used a USB cable from my camera. Connected instantly when , after trying reinstalling etc., I used a PS4 usb cable! It may be an issue of voltage ... Cheers.
are you using an audio interface ? or it's just the sound from amp? i have vox vx2 and i cant use this software...it's very noisy with jamvox software. can you help me?
In this video I'm just using mic'ed sound from the amp. That's how I record with the VT20X I just prefer the sound of the speaker as the waves move through the air. I'm old school I guess. Sometimes I do record direct and use amp simulation in Logic Pro - but usually only when I want super-clean sounds.
I am interested on this amp, does it have a digital noise or is it too audible? I am getting either this or the micro terror. What can you suggest? Thanks
I'm getting no detectable "digital" noise, but if you have single coil pickups and get too close to a monitor or other electronic interference source, then you'll get a hum. I stay back from the computer monitors and use shielded cables. Also, when I use my iMac, absolutely zero noise. Of course certain types of distortion or gain effects will generate a bit of noise - but all in all this is a nice quiet amp. I haven't used Micro Terror yet. I'm sure it's great for recording and playing live if you really like the orange sound (I do BTW), but the VOX will do so much more than the MT, and it includes an excellent speaker - for only $20-$30 more. I'm going to test a micro terror and I'm sure I'll like it - but I'd still need the cabinet, and no programmable and recallable sound settings, so I'm thinking the VOX is still the best option for most folks. Also - I've recently bought a VOX VT40X, and I'm loving it too. Great for gigging. The VT20X is a perfect option for the studio though. TLG
Tony, does your VTX have much noise floor ? I just picked up a 40 and the noise floor is very high. There's a digital "fizz" on every note and chord, and an occasional "burst" of digital noise. I think I got a lemon, but before I send it back the same amp, I want to make sure this noise floor is not the norm ?
Mine is quiet as a mouse - especially with humbucker pickups. My Telecaster is a little noisy, especially if I'm close to my computer gear. Les Paul and other humbucking pickup guitars is very quiet. Hope this helps.
@@LeCatoMedia hi, i also feel that the vtx make too much noise floor, and the inside noise gate is no that good because at the end of a note seems that unaturaly fades away. Im not very sure if an external noise gate pedal should work, at the moment Im not very pleased with this amp
I don't have an Epiphone, but I've used it with other economy guitars from Ibanez, Squier and Oscar Schmidt. I think it sounds pretty excellent with any of these. Check this video out where I'm using a sub-$200 OS50: th-cam.com/video/xuYlYbWOvoQ/w-d-xo.html
Go to: www.voxamps.com/Support - select "toneroom" in the search area. When the toneroom page comes up it will be about halfway down - VOX ToneRoom Installer for Windows 0 ToneRoom_Installer_110en.exe
Out of all the reviews I have watched on this amp, yours is the one that convinced me that this is the amp that I want and need, thank you
I purchased one ,and was amazed kill tone loud enough for what I do. Only thing I want like is the limp power input
Best amp I have ever purchased! Sounds are extremely convincing and for playing at home its all you need.Vox makes great stuff across the board!
totally agree. I bought it 2 days ago and its very nice!!!
Scored one for 100 bucks on ebay! That little pathfinder sounded best of any of the small amps I saw for the price, so I know this learning toy will melt my butter!
$100 is a super steal on that little amp. You'll love it!
This is the only review I've seen that shows the Tone Room, thank you.
Hi how you set up the banks
Is there a preset for Gary Moore mark knoplfer and Brian may type tones?
You are the only person I know who plays Cliffs of Dover better than you play Sweet Child of Mine. That's like driving a Formula One race car better than a mini van.
Ha - Guess I like Eric a lot better than I like Slash. I think I spent a week studying Cliffs way back, but like 2 minutes learning SCOM. Great comment.
@@tonyleeglenn Tony if you could only have one would it be the VT40X or the VT20X?
Have you managed to figure it out
i believe if you get an OTG cable and install the app onto your phone you should be good to go.
Sorry, I don't have an Android. PC only.
just bought one of these amps and have been blown away with all the tone room stuff,,,purple rain is spot on for tone,,,i thought there was enough on the amp to keep me happy then plugged in the tone room of my iphone and could hardly believe there was so much more and you can save them to the main presets also,,,,just so much value for moneymmmthanks for the post ,,,cheers from australia nice playing too
Bought the vt40x and..
I still love this amp. I've bought and tested others in the past couple of years, but this one still has my heart!
Great Demo! I bought the VT40X and loved seeing what this can do! Thanks!
Getting one of these amps to go with my new Squire Affinity Jazzmaster HH next month.....excited!!!
Thanks Tony, been watching 100's of videos to research my next amp but your video game me the missing info I needed to make my decision. I will be buying this little gem. great work my friend - thumbs up from me :)
Thumbs up from Marion. Just picked this amp up after hearing your demo. Super value, easy to tweak and the speaker isnt too bad.
Nice! I love all those bands! I knew you could play more than the blues, I just didn't know you played stuff from my generation! haha!
GREAT REVIEW I played 40 years, i have my Marshall, Fender tube Beasts, but i bought one of these for my small, knock around amp, living room box. for $80 used, didnt even plug it in, saw the price and features, bought it
OMG I LOVE IT.
I have one and I definitely need to get the cables to hook up to my phone or a computer. Thanks for the info.
Excellent review, I love that you look like a kid with an awesome new toy!
Tony I just bought the vt40X OVERKILL. Lol loved your playing. 👌✨🎸
Pardon me, demo, not demons.
Ha - demons! Funny. You'll love that amp brother.
Thanks for the review Tony! Definitely getting one of these! Amazing job demoing it!
I actually have the VT20X, looks like I need to play around with this! Thanks!
Awesome video mate :) I just ordered the VT100x, and looking forward to playing with this software. Thanks for the overview
I just bought this Amp for 155 €. 👍
Fantastic price to performance ratio!
Great informative video! ( I like your music room also).. I actually think this Tone room software may be easier to use than Fenders "Fuse" editing software . I'm going the simple route and getting a Vox AV15, A tube, presets and great sounds. I've always liked The Vox sound.
Great review. I just got rid of an older Valvestate Vox, and I think I know which one I'm buying next.
TLG
You deserve more than a like for being the video to explore the vox toneroom sadly I can only subscribe and I hope your store weathers the pandemic and all goes well
Cheers Tony, I am off to make my purchase!!! Woo hoo, rock on dude! It was like watching a kid on Christmas morning with his favourite toy!
Hard to beat that little amp for the price. You'll love it!
I had been struggling to make my mind up, but you definitely helped! Thanks for that.
@@tonyleeglenn I’d agree it’s a great amplifier right out of the box, and thank you for the feedback. Have a wonderful day.
The Original Micro Cube is still the gold standard. The sound is in your hands!
Just curious how you would compare these Vox modeling amps to the Fender Mustangs. Which do you like better?
Great review. Just bought one of these and hoping that tone room is still available to be used. Thanks Tony. Don’t know how you remember to play all those songs!
Ha - I barely remember how to play ANY song these days. Yes Tim, that's a great amp. Tone room is a cool program. I think it's still available for download.
Here's the Toneroom link: voxamps.com/en-xa/product/toneroom/
@@tonyleeglenn Thanks Tony !
+christian mullin thanks for the suggestion. I'll try to make a video that shows my best practices for editing and saving presets
Last week I seen this Vox Amp at Guitar Center for 179.00. Good demo.
179 what? Dollars? Pounds? Euros? I don't know where Guitar Center is.
Bought mine here in Germany some days ago for 155 €.
Nice Demo I am too very impressed by this amp.
Thanks for the reply! I really appreciate it!
awesome range of sounds!
I love this amp.
hii,, wonderful demo,,, will the vox 40vtx be too loud for home use?? or shud i get vt20x?? eagerly waiting for ur reply ,,,please help me..!! thankuu
My friend is about to get one as his first amp, this will help him a lot, great vid \m/
He'll have many hours of great fun with this amp. I still discover new things about it that impress me every week.
I would watch you review wheat bread, man. Love it. You're so damn genuine.
That is one cool comment Jon. Many thanks for that brother.
Keep on keepin' on, Tony Lee!
i love my vt20x thanks for the demo u r a great guitar player wish i was too 😔
It really is a sweet amp. Thanks for your comment Jess. Also thanks for the comment about my playing. I really don't think I'm that good. It's cool that someone like you said something nice about it though.
Awesome review mate wathcing in 2021!
Which one to choose between Vox VT20X and Fender Mustang LT25?
You say that there are good reviews about this amp. Actually your video makes me buying this soon :D
Thank you for the great experience!
+atomeec Really appreciate this comment. Thanks so much for watching.
+Mission Heart News By any chance is that a Fender Mustang in the background on the very right side of the video? If yes, could you please give me a second opinion that the VOX would be more versatile amp (for the Mustang I won't have any chance to check in live but the VOX I will try out when I buy). If that is not a Mustang then just ignore my comment :)
Edit.
Sounds fantastic! Just ordered one
So I've had a vox Vt20x and it's been losing volume if and when I touch the volume or gain etc when it's in the effects mode. It's all great other than having to keep messing with volume. I hope I didnt get a bad one.
Its plugged into a cheap power strip. Maybe that's affecting it. I dont know.
That cliffs of Dover was awesome. I’m seriously considering buying this amp. But I don’t know where I lie in terms of style yet. I’m still a newbie after 15 years. I’m a bit worried this amp won’t be in the right place for Metallica and some other bands that play quite heavy.
Tony, is this Tone Room program used as a plugin in Adobe Audition or can it be used independently? Thank you!
Hello Tony. Have just watched your TH-cam demo for the SECOND time and read all the comments again. This has swayed me toward a VTX for sure. One question:
In the FX section, what would you do if you wanted, say, Chorus AND Compression active at the same time?! It doesn't look possible with Tone Room...
That's correct - you'd have to have a chorus pedal between the guitar and the amp to pull that off. I've got a Boss CS3 that I use.
You might also consider the Boss Katana. I love mine. Still like the VOX overdrives better, but the Katana is amazing for the effects.
Wow - I'll bet that sounds fantastic. Yes I am interested. Gotta see if I can find some videos. I'll check your channel?
@@tonyleeglenn I USED a Hughes and Kettner Cab With a line out to use a second cab.. there's a video of someone taking apart a VT20 but didn't fix it
Great video..
Can I plug the Vox directly into my PC and access the amp models and save it to the Amp?
Many thanks
Thanks for the comment Peter. I'll try to make a video this weekend to show how I save and load into the amp. Back with you soon my friend! TLG
Here's the unit I use for my two amp setup: www.sweetwater.com/store/detail/SwitchbladePro--electro-harmonix-switchblade-pro-switching-station
@@tonyleeglenn thank for responding!
Too bad there's not (yet) an amp that delivers both.
cheers mate. very much appreciate the video. These amps are a right laugh
Really nice presets, great video, it really show how powerful is the tone room, is there any place to download those presets? Thanks.
Thanks for rewiew! I want this amp..
BETTER than the boss katana imo 👌😝
So are you plugging the amp into the interface? If so please share as that question brought me to this video but was only covered for like .1 of a micro second
Yes - just direct into my iMac with a Focusrite Scarlett. Here are litterally thousands of micro seconds showing how I do it! th-cam.com/video/_O7xFcYfDLY/w-d-xo.html
Just found your channel, hooked thanks, on the hunt for a 20x or 40x🙂
Hope you can find one Tim. They are pretty special little amps for sure! Many thanks for watching.
This really is a very good amp. Disclaimer: The following is my "opinion." : )
For practice amps, I can compare it to the Mustang ii v2 and the Blackstar ID:15TVP.
That Cliffs of Dover was awesome
Thanks man!
Hello, What type of a adapter will work on the Voxvt40x from ipad for Tone Room?
Thanks
Mike
Hey Mike. Just whatever cable will give you a USB mini on the VOX end. It has a USB (type b) mini female input on the top left. See the specs at www.voxamps.com/VT40X
Can you tell me how can I connect my vox vt40x to a MacBook via USB to record on Logic Pro? I’ve been looking everywhere but I can't find any information about it 😕
Hi Tony really quick question, what guitar of yours are you demoing in this video. This is awesome.. What model guitar?
Hey Angel. That one is a 2008 Gibson Les Paul Studio with Classic 57 humbuckers. I only have two "high-end" electrics (if you can call them that). One is the LP Studio, and the other is a 1989 American Telecaster. All the rest of mine are affordable guitars.
@@tonyleeglenn Hey thanks Tony. You're the best!
Is there a way to save one of those tone room presets to the amp so you don't always have to be plugged into a USB w pc or phone?
Just bought this amp used. Might be a dumb question but where do I get tone room? Looks awesome!
voxamps.com/product/toneroom/
also on Anderton's review they said the amp model after the Brit 800 is an orange but doesn't it say Brit or mk 2 on the amp?
Update : To all having connectivity issues with the Tone Room
" Device not connected " when I used a USB cable from my camera.
Connected instantly when , after trying reinstalling etc., I used a PS4 usb cable!
It may be an issue of voltage ...
Cheers.
Will the ps4 cable work with vt20x?
I think it will need that psp mini usb to connect it to pv
Great video
are you using an audio interface ? or it's just the sound from amp?
i have vox vx2 and i cant use this software...it's very noisy with jamvox software.
can you help me?
TLG
What cable do you use to connect your amp to tone room. I've tried numerous cables now and had no luck.
I think I got a lemon. This can't be the norm. Thanks for the reference point. I also notice my headphone output is barely there.
@@LeCatoMedia hi, i also feel that the vtx make too much noise floor, and the inside noise gate is no that good because at the end of a note seems that unaturaly fades away. Im not very sure if an external noise gate pedal should work, at the moment Im not very pleased with this amp
mneg 1988 I dumped it and got a Katana and never looked back.
@@LeCatoMedia wish version? Should be good enough to play metal and practice in a band?
Hey, would you say using this amp as an interface is just as good as a normal interface that’s not a amp too
Hija one more question 😂 I have a Epiphone les Paul standard do u think it would still sound reasonable using the vox?
I don't have an Epiphone, but I've used it with other economy guitars from Ibanez, Squier and Oscar Schmidt. I think it sounds pretty excellent with any of these. Check this video out where I'm using a sub-$200 OS50: th-cam.com/video/xuYlYbWOvoQ/w-d-xo.html
@@tonyleeglenn ok will do tnx
How did you get Tone Room on your PC? I can't seem to find a download, the VOX website does not provide a download link.
Go to: www.voxamps.com/Support - select "toneroom" in the search area. When the toneroom page comes up it will be about halfway down - VOX ToneRoom Installer for Windows 0 ToneRoom_Installer_110en.exe
Thank you so much!
Hey Tony do you know if the Tone Room App works with Windows 7 PC? Thanks.
Please fellows, help me.. has this program a looper pedal on it? To configure the footswitch with it?
No looper.
@@tonyleeglenn I really appreciate your answer. Thanks 🙏!!!! Great video by the way 👍👍
