The crazy thing is you still see these things around on the road and at car shows, especially modified. You can even get the Corvette C4s, C5s, and some C6s dirt cheap depending on where you look.
I had a C6 Corvette as a Hertz Rental at SFO years back. I can tell you that this is what makes America great. An average person can buy and maintain this car. Although I more of a AMG person, but I can understand why this car is well loved. I only had a few days with this car, and I fell in love with this. My high school friend is a truck driver, and he owns a Corvette. You don’t need a royalty/ royalty title or trust fund to own this car. Parts are interchangeable with most GM products. At least the older models are just big blocks that don’t need a lot of care and maintenance. Sure Porsches and AMG are a lot of fun, but you don’t need to make sure a trust fund is set for your kids to ensure that your toy is eating up your retirement savings. This thing will bring a smile on your face with almost average car expenses and can be driven every day.
I own a MY 2000 one of these. It's amazing. It's basically a diet Z06. You can find rubber all day long, the suspension is super stiff, and its so good for track days and performance driving. "If you have the means, I HIGHLY recommend picking one up!".
Same here. Every Monday night i would go running to my dad while he was tune into MotorWeek. Pretty sure we were both thinking the same thing while looking at the cars lol
In April last year i bought a 99 Hardtop C5 with only 18k miles. Garage kept its whole life, still bone stock except for smoked windows which the previous owner had put on. Low VIN ending in 0227 had a base sticker of $38,197, less then $38,777 posted on this video. Amazing car and I love its beautiful lines every day i look at it. Even the interior is awesome, except for the stock base seats which have no bolstering.
One of my favorite modern Corvettes. C4-C6 are my favorites. My father in law still has his Light Pewter 2002 Corvette. It's a 4 speed automatic, but it's still a quick car to this day. 350 HP doesn't seem like much, but it'll still get up and go if you want it to.
Because weight matters they're only 3200 lbs and have awesome aero. It's as fast as alot of 400-500 hp cars today. It isn't just about power but everyone always focuses on not only power but peak power...that is a small part of the equation.
beautiful car, my brother had the same gen but with a Targa top, fun to drive, too bad he totaled it, we will probably get another another one in the future
I was at an auto show when the C6 Targa was new and got to sit in it because I knew what it was. I thought the targas were the best of both worlds. It was always a close second for me with the hardtop coupe❤❤
Gotta love old-asses with money. Chevy tries to make a no frills entry level Corvette and the old guys get mad that it's not loaded. So Corvette folds to them.
And here I thought I knew enough about the C5. I just found out that that hard top long rear deck was also available on Standard Vettes. All along, I thought it was reserved for the Z06. Very nice....
I've owned a 97 C5 Corvette Manual since 2001. It's the perfect for life sportscar. I don't see any reason to ever sell it or a need for any other American sportscar.
A lot of people think that. All C5 Z06's are FRC's but not all FRC's are Z06's. 1999 and 2000 were FRC only. From 2001 through 2004, they were all Z06's.
motorweek, Can you please upload the 04-05 impala ss review? I know you guys have it but never seen it. Of course I am asking cause I just restored one.
I actually like this spec of C5. No frills and lighter, so you can take it on track. Plus the fixed roof probably helped with body stiffness. Anybody know how many of these were made?
I own a 99 FRC. It has the HUD, 6 way power seat as well as the electronic dual zone climate control. I have a Corvette dealer brochure from 1999 which stated these options were not available on the FRC model. Chevrolet had already produced the marketing materials before changing their mind about adding these options and did not go back and update the brochure. Not counting the Z06 (also an FRC body) which was produced from 2001 - 2004, there were only around 6,000 FRC's coupes made between 99 and 2000.
Back in that year, I got an '00 Mustang GT with a built motor, supercharger, drag suspension, tires, 4.30 final, exhaust, etc. Whole thing... and I'd zip around preying on unsuspecting douchebag Vette owners at redlights because I was jealous I couldn't afford one. Fast forward to today... I have a lightly modded '21 C8... and now I'm the Vette douchebag... keeping my eyes peeled for dudes in supercharged Coyote stangs that want to shit on me at redlights. 🤣
Seen one of these at rod run in pigeon forge tennesee a few years back for like 10k. Prob couldnt find one now for that the secret is starting to get out.
Too bad GM didn’t make anything else more of what the corvette was. I mean really? Making this amazing Corvette right beside a totoally outdated pile of Cavaliers? 😮
It has taken me almost 30 years to find these attractive. This is partly due to today’s Corvette, looking like some ruler, engineered Ferarri knock- off, and long term recovery from the fetish and the overload of anything with wheels required to look like a lozenge. To be clear, the car still looks like it needs to lose at least 500 pounds and it has not one bit of a chiseled athletic profile, but it looks decent, and not marred by too many random and fussy character lines. A decent looking Corvette. Now. Finally.
What John said at the very end is more true than ever today.
Crazy how he managed to make such an accurate prediction
“Brain-dead smart cars” lol
The crazy thing is you still see these things around on the road and at car shows, especially modified. You can even get the Corvette C4s, C5s, and some C6s dirt cheap depending on where you look.
Dirt cheap C6 is a tad of a stretch unless it’s a POS
The C5 and C6 are still good, affordable platforms. I'd love to get my hands on either in decent condition.
I had a C6 Corvette as a Hertz Rental at SFO years back. I can tell you that this is what makes America great. An average person can buy and maintain this car. I especially like the 97-99's ❤
Dirt Cheep C4 owner here, can confirm it's the best sports car deal anyone can get their hands on imo
"Brain dead smart cars". The future was predicted.
The FRC was the cheapest C5 you could get about 5-10 years ago, now they're sought after
Looks way better than the hatchback
Dennis Collins probably bought them all up.
For me this is the best looking Corvette or the C6 simple yet nice
The c6-c7 were good looking cars. The new c8 looks like someone made a 458 off a blurry fax.
Nice car, I watched these programs faithfully. Thanks for bringing them back!
I own a MY 2000 one of these. It's amazing. It's basically a diet Z06. You can find rubber all day long, the suspension is super stiff, and its so good for track days and performance driving. "If you have the means, I HIGHLY recommend picking one up!".
I’m sensing a Ferris Bueller’s day off Ferrari reference here…
This originally aired on PBS on my 13th birthday! I think this hardtop is my FAV C5 Vette.
It always was for me.
Same here. Every Monday night i would go running to my dad while he was tune into MotorWeek. Pretty sure we were both thinking the same thing while looking at the cars lol
who else still wants one of these?
The Fixed Roof Coupe is a coveted car by the Corvette community. It’s a niche car that most regular car people don’t know about.
Less mass, less wind noise, more rigid, what is not to like.
Damn I never actually realized the difference and I've claimed the Corvette as my favorite car since child-hood.
👍
Rare birds. Sold a house to a guy that had a white on black FRC. His was a 2000.
2:05 John: But you still get to face the Vette’s excellent analoge gauge cluster! LOL
Man, this John Davis has seen it all. The man has been around for decades and was part of so many great cars "coming out" on TV.
I absolutely LOVE Bright Blue Metallic on these! ❤️
I still miss my ‘99 FRC. It handled like it was on rails.

I think the Targa Top is still the best looking C5 and one of the best looking sports cars ever made.
Corvettes are always the best bang for the buck...
Just bought one of these today in the nassau blue. Didn't know they were so rare!
These are my favorite too. I wouldn't mind more power in C4 but they look great!
Because weight matters they're only 3200 lbs and have awesome aero. It's as fast as alot of 400-500 hp cars today. It isn't just about power but everyone always focuses on not only power but peak power...that is a small part of the equation.
@@midnight347 you got it
The most elegant modern era Corvette
I still see these today.
Absolutely. I see them a lot at car shows too.
Z06 Lite. I like this body style most of the C5s.
"Bloated sport utes and brain dead smart cars." Nice one, John.
The C5 FRC is still beautiful and unique. I owned a 2004 Z06/Z16 and it's one of the few cars that I miss.
We want to test drive Ford Crown Victoria LX Sport and Mercury Marauder 2004 Super Charge and normal version
They have them on their retro playlist. Go to there and watch them if you’re interested
I didn't get Crown Victoria LX Sport and Mercury Marauder 2004 Super Charge version if you get show me❤@@chrisdooley1184
Thanks for road testing and reveiwing this 1999 Corvette Coupe.
beautiful car, my brother had the same gen but with a Targa top, fun to drive, too bad he totaled it, we will probably get another another one in the future
I was at an auto show when the C6 Targa was new and got to sit in it because I knew what it was. I thought the targas were the best of both worlds. It was always a close second for me with the hardtop coupe❤❤
My father owned a red hardtop manual (the year before the Z06) for about 17 years. His definitely had the HUD though.
He's wrong you could get HUD on the FRC.
I didnt know gus fring was a corvette owner
I thought the same thing lol
One of the most reliable sports cars over.
I had a brand new one back in ‘99. These were rare. Precursor to the ZO-6. Mine ran 13.30’s bone stock hardly broken in. Fun car.
Gotta love old-asses with money. Chevy tries to make a no frills entry level Corvette and the old guys get mad that it's not loaded. So Corvette folds to them.
I always loved the design of this generation.
Gus fring demonstrating the features.
John was certainly right about the new millennium bringing more sport utes and brain-dead-smart cars. Except it’s even truer now in the 2020s.
01:18 Gustavo Fring is going to Mexico for a meeting.
This is my favorite modern vette!
Neat Car!
And here I thought I knew enough about the C5. I just found out that that hard top long rear deck was also available on Standard Vettes. All along, I thought it was reserved for the Z06. Very nice....
It was 01-04 these were 99-00 only and before the c5z.
La meilleure génération de Corvette, celle que j'ai découverte en premier grâce à Need for Speed Poursuite Infernale 2 sur GameCube.
I've owned a 97 C5 Corvette Manual since 2001. It's the perfect for life sportscar. I don't see any reason to ever sell it or a need for any other American sportscar.
Isnt this what 2001 corvette ZO6 was based off of?
That blue is beautiful.
Back when extra add-on features prices made sense.
I had a 2000 model. It was a great car.
"One power adjustment fore and aft". Watches seat go up.
Sure John.
I always thought only rhe z06 was a hard top
A lot of people think that. All C5 Z06's are FRC's but not all FRC's are Z06's. 1999 and 2000 were FRC only. From 2001 through 2004, they were all Z06's.
That was the case 01-04. These were 99-00 before the c5z.
My Dream Vette! Would rather have this than a C8
I like the c6 as my favorite but these are just as awesome
Like the C4's better but they're still a helluva lot better looking than the new ones. 😝
“My Corvette is BEST Corvette because…!”
A unicorn. Not many survived this long...
motorweek, Can you please upload the 04-05 impala ss review? I know you guys have it but never seen it. Of course I am asking cause I just restored one.
Corvettes always had good brakes👨🔧
I actually like this spec of C5.

4:03 more proof camara men never die
Imagine a world Without sports cars😂😂
Sadly, that's becoming too much of a reality today...
I would love to have a stripped down Corvette. All I care about are the drivetrain, brakes and suspension
A used car dealer not far from my house has a lot full of these.
Seen one of these at rod run in pigeon forge tennesee a few years back for like 10k. Prob couldnt find one now for that the secret is starting to get out.
Peak corvette!
The coupe appears to be more practical. Six speed manual, yes.
I didnt know that Gus Fring was helping motorweek ajajajajaa.
i like him
Sweet!!❤
love mine 1988 Black convertible 62 thousand miles my baby
There was no hardtop in 88.
I great car for the money
Stop! Hammer Time! 😀
C5 FRC is the best Vette ever.
Is that Gustavo Fring?
The future z06 body
You should only be allowed to buy a automatic transmission corvette if your handicapped
John back in 1999, brain dead smart cars lol
Driver A.K.A New Jack City.
Ahhh the good old days, when manual transmissions had a major advantage over autos, now-days you have to have a slush box to go faster 🤬
Would like to see retros of budget cars like kia sephia and toyota tercel
surprise, surprise, check engine light in a GM car
brain dead smart cars like the..... electric hummer?
I think he meant actual Smart cars.
Wow, it’s a lot slower than my 03 Z06.🤣
at 2;45 an automatic will NOT be offered . right on chevrolet!
Too bad GM didn’t make anything else more of what the corvette was. I mean really? Making this amazing Corvette right beside a totoally outdated pile of Cavaliers? 😮
Driver look pissed 😂
1:52 someone needs a manicure 💅💅💅
o baby
1:49 Sammy Davis Jr. 🤔
i think he looks way more like gus fring
Boomers got all the good shit

A decent looking Corvette. Now. Finally.
Whoever they had doing their 0 to 60 tests sucked at launches. Over 5 seconds for an frc c5? Remember when their Gallardo test was over 5?
gus fring
Convertible would be better
First time me recognizing a black guy doing the car test thing 😮😂
Almost same numbers as a Hyundai Kona.
One of the worst stock wheel designs imo. Looks like a wheel cover fell off of a cheap steelie.
They were nasty,,,what we all did back in the day was have the stock wheels chromed. Min was white with chrome wheels…nice for the timd.
