  • What do you do if the back window on your BMW Z3 cracks? You can replace the window, or you can swap the whole hood. And since I had a spare hood...
While I want to be focused on EV stuff, other things keep getting in the way. Like the back window of my daily driver shattering in the cold. After chatting to a few people, the quickest fix seemed to be to swap the whole hood rather than the window, which sounded like a pig of a job. Plus the hood in what has become my parts car was in pretty good shape and better insulated than the one on the Japanese import.
I don't document the whole swap in this video but I do highlight the key bits and share some tips from my experience. It's not a hard job, and I got there in the end, though it would be easier with two people.

Hood. Boot. bonnet, petrol, and my favorite...Zed....no wonder a bunch of us started the United States...the words my ancestors use...makes me skin crawl...lol. and if "Z" is Zed, "T" must be Ted....isn't that....BRILLIANT?!?! Now if you'll excuse me, I must open the hood on my 1997 Z3 and change the oil....
don't mind me, I'm just having a wee bit of fun..

I was back in the states a couple of weeks ago and never has the old phrase about two countries separated by a common language seemed more apt!

Thank you for posting this video, my old soft top/hood/roof had totally had it, so I bought a really good second hand one.... so far I have removed the ,I think I counted 12 bolts from under the carpet covering.... having a rest now whilst I try to work out how to get to and remove those two smaller nuts...after that I will see if the old one will come off... hope so.

Lots of sealant to peel away too. Took me a while.

@@mikesawyeroriginsofsound9403 Trying to remember what I used. Possibly a little ratchet or just an open spanner. Memory fails me!

A little ratchet is all I have, so hoping that does the trick..... last question if you don't mind, the sealant, did you just use brute force or a trimming knife? @@EVDIY

@@mikesawyeroriginsofsound9403 😆. The sealant was a little perished on mine I think. A trim removal tool managed to pierce and separate a lot of it without damaging either side.

Thanks for all the vids! What sealant did you use? And did you apply it to the back of the plastic guard before or after putting the new roof back in position? What would be best you think?

Good questions. Wish I could remember the answers! Not sure what I used but I think I applied it to the car rather than the roof and then sandwiched it in?
