I built one of these based on an 18th C. German design. A very interesting instrument, not all that easy to play. Very touch sensitive.

This kind of videos are the reason why TH-cam was created. Some people ruined it.

Perhaps stupid question but why on the earth 10 people opted to thumb down? This video is comprehensively informative, yet short and crisp. Did they need more? They'd better go get specific books. You can't expect to get a full treaty herewith, can you?

I have an Unfretted Clavichord w/ Two Keyboards & Bass Pedals but what distinguishes it from other Clavichords is that it uses Nylon strings.

I've always been interested in this instrument that seems almost lost in these times when music has changed so much. Thanks for posting this cool little video. Maybe someday I'll be lucky enough to happen by an old one to add to my repair projects!

Thanks for this video. Thinking of getting a clavichord (when or if I have money!) and glad to be able to see this demonstration. I would have liked to hear a longer demonstration of the differences in tone, though, perhaps with the same passage played on both.

I've seen some keyboards that split the black keys into separate "sharp" and "flat"keys; I wonder if that principle could be usefully applied to a double-fretted clavichord, so each octave would have strings for C/C#, Db/D/D#, Eb/E, F/F#, Gb/G/G#, Ab/A/A#, and Bb/B?

I wonder if anyone ever tried making highly fretted clavichords with (for instance) 4 strings having highly overlapping ranges and matching 4 ranks of keys, so that you can get adjoining notes by playing the notes on different strings, like on a guitar? I have seen a video in which somebody made a clavichord with just 1 fully fretted string, but nothing in between.
Edit: Think of a cross between a clavichord and a nyckelharpa.

Please do the Same Thing on a Daddy Grand Piano For Most of us TH-camrs, It will be a much Better Idea For us so we can Try and See and Hear It Thank You.

'Has separate strings for all the natural notes'... bup bup bup bup bup bup buh. My ears encased by headphones 'hears' a Beatles' sitar? I am following Wim Winters on AuthenticSound and having a difficult time adjusting to the lute-ness I hear from the clavichord and therefore finding myself more deeply enamored of the fortepiano, and, surprisingly, the harpsichord. This video is wonderfully presented. Thnx.

Wait wait wait, is there official proof of vibrato being used in clavichord playing? What was this german word? I've been wondering of this for some time, is there some treatise that makes reference to this or something? I would love to look into this further, but I felt I was at a dead end.

    Hello
You stated "both offer different musical advantages."
I'm hoping to buy a clavichord. I'm thinking I want an unfretted clavichord?
Can you tell me what the advantages a fretted clavichord has?

    • @Ekvitarius
      @Ekvitarius 7 ปีที่แล้ว +3

There are less strings to tune, less strings putting tension on the soundboard, and their smaller size makes them slightly more portable (I assume you want to build a full size one, and not one of the little tabletop ones)

what's the bach fugue you were playing?

    •  7 ปีที่แล้ว +9

It is from Fugue in f minor, BWV 881, from the second book of Well-Tempered Clavier - the sequence in question starts on measure 17.
