I just love it that Gohan is using the same clothes as his father to honor him and respect him he wears it with pride just like future Gohan did in the Future Trunks timeline.
One thing to remember about the Elder Kai's ritual is the fact that Gohan only became that powerful from it BECAUSE he is Gohan. If Elder Kai did the same ritual on say Goku or Vegeta in this same arc they would have NOT gotten the same massive increase in power that Gohan did. Gohan's insane latent potential combined with the training he did with the Z sword to make his base form way stronger is the reason Gohan is the strongest unfused character in this arc.
9:51 Gohan said he was going to kill him yet he proceed to fight him and toy around with him just like he did to Perfect Cell instead of just erasing him on the spot. Classic Saiyan behavior...Vegeta, Goku, and Gotenks have all toyed around with their opponents as well instead of just erasing them immediately with one massive blast.
I've always thought of this Gohan form as the opposite of what Buu is. Buu is pure evil and dark magic, whereas Ultimate Gohan is akin to divine magic, something that would completely counter Buu and Babadi's magic.
Toriyama did , he thought about doing a SSJ2 moment again then said at the last minute "Nah Gohan aint like that" As much as a genius mangaka he was , he still had faults sometimes his editors gave him better ideas BUT one suspicion I have is that he really really wanted to stop writing the manga because he was burned out as hell and if he chose to end it with Gohan then at some point he had to "flesh him out " but chose Goku because he was already a fleshed out character and nothing else to add ,plus the idea that he started out with Goku and ended with Goku , it would do a full circle and for his manga to end , it was right on the time where Dragon ball reached a fatigued stage since the last episode ended on Jan 1996 , the movies ended in 1995 and while Gt released in FEb 1996 the fatigued was full , people had enough of dragon ball for a while

Instead of absorbing,buu should have morphed into the serious buu(han) and beat everyone and then the fusion comes in to the play since buu ends up actually being far stronger than he showed.

What Piccolo doesn't know at this point in time is that Gohan isn't in his base form, it's what's been called and now canonized as his "ultimate form" and Potential Unleashed, which lets him access all of his strength that he would've had as a Super Saiyan without having to transform, which maximizes his power without draining his stamina so quickly, similar to what he and Goku were doing at the Cell Games when they had trained how to constantly maintain SSJ1 to maximize the form's efficiency, the difference obviously being that Gohan's potential was unlocked, allowing him to go higher than he could before, which at this current point technically made him the strongest non-fused character, some would debate that Goku was still stronger as a SSJ3 but you'll see later why that pretty much won't matter, like at all.
