(28 Dec 1944) The campaigns of 1944 were planned at the Tehran Conference, with the meeting of Roosevelt, Stalin and Churchill. ® ® The Russians continued to sweep forward, liberating city after city, they reached the borders of Poland and moved towards Roumania. ® ® In Italy the Anzio beachhead was established and the monastery to Monte Cassino, a German bolt hole, was shattered. The Germans were in retreat and the Fifth Army reached Rome. ® ® June saw D-Day and the historic landings on the beaches of Normandy followed by the move inland and the liberation of Paris. ® ® In the Low Countries there were the Arnhem landings and the capture of Antwerp. ® ® Great advances have been made in the Pacific arena in the war against Japan. General MacArthur returned to the Philippines. ® ® Burma was the scene of fierce fighting by Britain's 14th Army when they stopped the Japanese invasion of India.
