Damn, good video, very good explanation. Your video pushed me right over to the cougar paws. i’ve got the magnetic ones, and they work awesome on metal roofs, but I’m getting into more shingle roofs, and I wanted a good opinion. You have done that sir thank you.
I have been climbing roofs for 30 years, I have been through many pairs of cougar paws. They are expensive and I have had the sole come off when I was on a roof. So always inspect your cougar paws before you get on the roof. My favorite roofing shoes is a good ole pair of soft crepe sole shoes as I find the cougar paws a little clunky and have to change shoes when you get off a roof. You can have a shoe repair guy put on some good soft crepe soles on any pair of shoes or boots you have. But as shown in this video it is much better to not have a heel, so the sole which contacts the roof is a flat surface. The crepe soles will wear out and need replacing but I have found they last longer than the replaceable soles on the cougar paws. When I started climbing Cougar Paws were not invented yet, so I may be a little old school, just passing along my experiences. Just be careful I have lost one friend and several injured falling off roofs, including me, but not due to my shoes.
Gary, this is great advice and couldn’t agree more. We always appreciate comments and suggestions from people who have been climbing roofs longer than us. Having your soles on regular shoes changed out is genius!

I’m in solar, a lot of guys use vans. But get a really hot day and your feet will be on fire, and blister alot easier, they are meant for low pitch roofs and shingles mainly, even hotter when working on tile roofs. Not to mention that they fall apart crazy fast

In 2007 I melted a brand new pair of Nike shoes, like an ice cream sandwich on a hot sunny day. If you're going with the skate shoe option, make sure they are either stitched or vulcanized. Ed
I have noticed that there’s one shoe that no one, and I mean no one bothers to review which is extremely good. It is a broomball shoe. These puppies really stick. They are made to haul butt on either a slick ice hockey rink, or outside on a snow covered one. You will need to carry a soft bristled finger nail brush to clean out the asphalt granules from time to time, but wow!!! Very light weight and very flexible with a huge surface area too. You’ll wear out the canvas before the sole. I suggest that you wear overshoes right up until you put a foot on a ladder, unless you’re in snow. I’ve been on metal roofs in winter, and plywood sheathing that was covered in sawdust. Stuck like glue. Please review

I wear foam skater shoes and I have no problem up to a nine pitch. When I get to a 10 I use my goat and wedge and still wear the same shoes with no problem. I have a pair of cougar paws sitting in my truck and I'm just about ready to go ahead and sell them because I hate cougar paws with a passion.
What's the best shoe for walking on the cured dry silicone somewhat pitched roof as well as when it's wet with rain water or from cleaning it with soap and water. I'm thinking maybe those shoes called "barefoot shoes" or maybe even some boat deck shoes? Hope to hear from you guys soon. Thank you

In my opinion, Walmarts brand "AND 1" shoes r second best next to cougar paws. Not only are they inexpensive costing approximately $20, but I have been able to walk a 12-12 pitch roof using AND 1 's.

Hey! We appreciate the kind words. Honestly, Vans is what I have bought in the past, but I know Nike and some of the other manufacturers have good shoes. Just make sure they are flat and have as much sole as possible for more surface contact.
Is there a way to strap the pads to your shoes without buying the boot too? I seem to recall my roof inspector slipping something over his shoes that look an awful lot like the cougar pads. And that strap makes it look like they can be taken off. Or, if not, maybe just glue the pads onto the bottom of a skater shoe?

Cougar Paws are great with asphalt shingles because they simulate a couch cushion on your feet. Couch cushions have been used for grip on asphalt shingles forever so that's why they have that design. I would venture that unless you use couch cushions in framing for grip, I would stick to a different type of shoe/ boot!
Austin, skater shoes work great on all roof types, in my opinion. Having softer, more forgiving soles is better on metal because it won't cause the metal to dent and crease as much.
I'm down here in Alabama too, facing hurricane Ida with a leaking roof. AND I have a vaulted ceiling. And I'm terrified of heights. I felt like I was sliding the entire time but thanks to your video I climbed my roof and tarped it myself. Before watching I was going to wear my Wolverines but chose my flat Converse instead. Did I mention I'm terrified of heights? And almost 50?! My husband who didn't leave the recliner the entire time not even to hold the ladder should be ashamed of himself.
Every different roof, has a, "best", shoe for roof substrates. Now for B.U.R., boots are your only choice I'd recommend. (Edit), I forget to mention, roofing is simply, very dangerous and the dynamics of what your walking on can change dramatically, for example: wet, or icy situations. One part of your roof might be dry and better to walk on, but a few feet away it could be slick. Remember folks, sometimes it's best to get on the roof a few hours later. It just might save your life. God bless you all.
I’m in solar I’m on roofs everyday, for a 10 pitch roof you just need shoes any kind. 10 pitch isn’t a slope at all you’re not going to fall it’s flat you won’t even feel the 10 degrees in the slope it will feel like you’re walking on the ground. I use cougar paws for anything 30 plus anything less wear anything with a flat sole.
What about keepfeel cool. My husband use nickel on his first day of actual working on the hot roof and not he has burned the bottom of his feet which is painful
no regular shoe is good for metal roofs. best thing is get shoes with magnets in them made for metal roofs. or dump a pop on the roof to get it sticky for better traction.
They sell non-slip shoes for restaurants and warehouse type work that requires non slip shoes, they have a pretty flat bottom and have superior grip, if you can't find anything at all, I would give them a try. Try testing it by placing a metal sheet on 2-3 steps, get it slightly wet and see which shoe you own gives you the best grip.

I'm guessing the obvious choice would be a mountain bike shoe or approach shoe. For example the Five Ten series have both types of shoe and the rubber is the stickiest in the world. They are stiff, flat and super grippy.
usually soft rubber works best on the ceramics granules on a roof something that conforms to them. keep in mind a couch cushion is about the stickiest thing on a roof
Have you tried the Vans Sk8-Hi DR MTE-2 shoes? Im pretty sure they are waterproof. I havent tried them tho, but wanna get them. The price tag's throwing me off though
I would say basketball shoes would probably have the same effect skater shoes do with more ankle support, but perhaps not the same gripping ability. The bottom of those shoes are designed to grip on wood, not an asphalt surface.

I have seen those too but since an asphalt shingle roof get soooo hot in the summer, I definitely wouldn't recommend when it gets hot. Before I wore any socks on the roof, I would more ankle support due to the pitch. I guess I missed something to review!

Yeah, I wonder about that. I bought a bunch of pads whenever I first bought my Cougar Paws and they've held up well, but perhaps they've changed their pads over the years. I wonder if the more falls are just because more people are using them now. It would be an interesting investigation... maybe a good video!
Digital Roofing Innovations the new batches seem much cheaper. They even feel different to the touch. Talked with a lot of fellow roofers and they all say the same.
best shoe for roofing is a inexpensive non waxy flat soft rubber shoe. And 1 are $15 and great even on 12/12 pitch roofs inexpensive because shoes don't last long on roofs.
Cougar paws are nice, he's right about metal roofs and sweat.. they slip out. On steep pitch, the boot makes you point your toes out on average, which wears on the Velcro at the front of the boot itself. If that Velcro breaks, you will get a scare. I use dc's because they breath, flat rubber sole, cost effective if you order in. And when they fail, your b-hole won't pucker....
just look at what the laborers have on.! The majority of the roof installers wear rhino boots. They work just as good as cougar paws but for the fraction of the cost.
They make a great boot, no doubt, but you have to make sure they have the soft soles, in my opinion. Many people don't like wearing boots all the time.
Die hard boots, wolverings same same as die hard with flat sole , there is another brand made in americaI same look at diehard. They don't slide when put plywood and plus has a flat sole , when so hot you wont feel it in your feet.
I used the cugar paws 20 years ago when I started working for a roofing contractor company. NO GOOD. I am using Timber land Pro work boots, alot better than those stupid cugar paws. Always wear a safety toe and anti skid shoes. I am a home inspector FYI.

Vans all the way ,only problem is you can really feel the heat from the roof on hot days

They are some variations, but we haven't tried them. I know the cougar paws are a little expensive, but right now, they are the best on the market.

Fila non skid safety shoes $35 black. Great for 7/12 and below. After that go with the cougar paws
What about ceramic rooftops?
Wolverine has durashocks that have a blue grip on the sole and it grips very well on high pitch. Cougar paws break to easy for the price.

The cougar paw pads as of late just shred to pieces or pull loose of the Velcro and curl. Seen lots of falls or almost falls on FB as of late.

best shoe for roofing is a inexpensive non waxy flat soft rubber shoe. And 1 are $15 and great even on 12/12 pitch roofs inexpensive because shoes don't last long on roofs.

Have you ever tried moc toe rhino boots? It’s what not only I but everyone I know use. They retail around $55.
I haven't! A lot of people have different shoes they like, but I am trying to stay pretty generic. I'll look into them though!
Cougar paws are nice, he's right about metal roofs and sweat.. they slip out. On steep pitch, the boot makes you point your toes out on average, which wears on the Velcro at the front of the boot itself. If that Velcro breaks, you will get a scare. I use dc's because they breath, flat rubber sole, cost effective if you order in. And when they fail, your b-hole won't pucker....

just look at what the laborers have on.! The majority of the roof installers wear rhino boots. They work just as good as cougar paws but for the fraction of the cost.

I recommend Wolverine boots not as expensive and good for over all roofs not only asphalt shingle roofs.
They make a great boot, no doubt, but you have to make sure they have the soft soles, in my opinion. Many people don't like wearing boots all the time.
Die hard boots, wolverings same same as die hard with flat sole , there is another brand made in americaI same look at diehard. They don't slide when put plywood and plus has a flat sole , when so hot you wont feel it in your feet.

I used the cugar paws 20 years ago when I started working for a roofing contractor company. NO GOOD. I am using Timber land Pro work boots, alot better than those stupid cugar paws. Always wear a safety toe and anti skid shoes. I am a home inspector FYI.

DO NOT USE SKATER SHOES ON SHINGLES ABOVE A 7 PITCH IF THE SOLE IS WET. THEY WILL SLIP. YOU WILL FALL.
