It just made it so that everytime he disobeys an order, one of his stars are destroyed, so he is blackmailed into working for the targonians, not directly controlled by them. I watch a fair amount of the current #1 Asol NA. He seemed to be really torn up about the rework, because he was happy to see Asol getting an update, but it really changed the playstyle.
Recently, he has settled on a more aggressive Q-focused strategy and is enjoying Asol at the top of NA.
I think that's a good microcosm of the Asol community right now. Really happy that Asol got an update, and still love the character, but with such drastic change it is hard to find a new playstyle and get excited about League again.

I play the old ASol on Wild Rift fairly often and new ASol is my secondary main next to Pantheon of PC League and I love both, the joystick controls of Wild Rift make old ASol's gameplay feel a lot more clean (although I will have to agree that nerfing his W during his "rework" a few years back was really stupid). And, as you described, the new ASol 100% fulfils the power fantasy of being an incredibly powerful space dragon who flies by people breathing out starfire and dropping black holes and meteors on people. I love both versions of ASol for different reasons and I feel like that's okay.

Old Sol kit did kinda fit his lore more if you take it from the perspective of "the boss character is toying with you", he knows he doesn't have to put any actual effort into harming you and he decided to prove it with a damage source he didn't even actively channel, just kinda orbited him, he's playing a minigame and toying with you, which made his smug attitude and downright hilarious disses towards the roster feel earned, he's so much stronger than you he can kill you without even giving you a passing glance
New Sol, is very cool, its effectively "the boss character isn't fucking around anymore", while I'll absolutely miss the aspect(get it) of his star mechanic and micro positioning his new gameplay feels much better for a casual audience and I have to concede and appreciate that, I also don't miss feeling like im turbo trolling if I don't roam 21903120391203901293012 times bot with my own agency meaning nothing beyond how quickly I'll get everfrost or rylais.

I miss old Asol so much it hurts.
I started League Of Legends in 2017, and mainly because i found the Asol trailer and a friend of mine in Highschool was playing the game. I jumped into the big world of League of Legends during Xayah and Rakan's release (champs who are also dear to my heart) but it was mainly for Asol first. I was bad , i was a bronzie but you know what? i didn't care the Asol kit was really enjoyable, and since it's one year after its release it has already been nerfed and stuff. I loved playing this big arrogant douche dragon who talks too much let his stars do the dirty work. I love the spacing mechanics (also why i love xayah and the feathers) i love the fact that you could litteraly harass someone and slow them to death while being fast as fucc with phase rush and rylai. TBH i always thought this kit fits him well. Asol is an arrogant dragon who got also tricked by humans so he is powerful but his ego makes him vulnerable also. The facts that he had stars rotating around him and the fact that when you enter the nono zone and gets to him makes him vulnerable really made sense to me. It was a fun character, with not a overloaded kit and fragilities that made him punishable even with the ult and it made perfect sense to me as a player and lover of Asol's kit. And i had no clue about macro and roaming and stuff like that, and even without that, he was an enjoyable mid...he became more enjoyable the more you learn the game, learn about roaming after shoving your wave and puting pressure into it.. he was unique. 'course i saw similarities of gameplay with xayah due to the spacing, but never did i play Asol like i played another champ and it was wonderful.
The first rework he got, despite the recast on the Q was already a fracture to me. He lost lots of ap ratio, he lost damages, and this rework made him very difficult to play, in a world where there are champs like Sylas, with overloaded kits and damages, Asol fell off and never did i understand the reason behind the rework (except the recast on Q again) when you look at the maths, the AP ratio of Asol, at this time, it's disgustingly ridiculous compared to lots of midlaner and i started playing less than before, still hoping they would revert that horrible rework.
But then, they announced and released the big Asol rework.
Oh woah, he puts an area on the ground, like soraka, and many champs, he's a scaling mage, just like syndra viktor and all those champs, how original.
But everyone loves it and play it? i wonder why.
It's definetely not because he has a %max health on his spells, a execute on another and overall, statitically more AP ratio and basic AP than old Asol.
I feel rubbed, by the fact that those AP ratio twikings could have fits with OG Asol. There was definetly a way to make him fit the new meta and make him enjoyable with his OG Kit. Now it's gone, forever, they erased it. And it's not like Swain or Voli rework where the champ actually feel like the same. It's a whole new way of playing a champ, which is not how i learned it and mastered it through the years.
Considering the state of Riot games right now and its policy about skins and stuff. I just can't help but feels like they needed him to be more appealing in this VERY GAME IN PARTICULAR that is Lol TO SELL MORE SKINS. Because don't get me wrong, Asol is very popular everywhere else, and people already thrive to buy and play him. the only place where he might not sell as much is Lol itself, because of his ''difficult kit''
This is really bullshit. Every people on this game plays differents champs and that what makes the game so unique and playable again again, so many differents abilities, style build ect... and i feel they removed one unique gameplay for the sake of selling mor cool dragon skins.
and while the new kit is strong and playable doesnt matter, they are tons of creature from LOR or Runeterra universe that could have propably fit this kit without erasing Asol. Heck if Riot can make Sona/Seraphine and Yone/Yasuo in a the same game without bending an eye why the fucc could they not do the same here if they liked that kit so much. Would have been okay to have more cool big ass creature in this game controlled by uwu cute adc and owo cute guys...
It's cool if more people are enjoying it, but removing and erasing an entire playstyle and original kit is not exactly that cool.

Riot would never be able to please everyone, and as much as I miss old ASol he really did need a rework. The only people that played him were the people that had hundreds of hours on him pretty much, and had a lot of weaknesses as well as being painfully difficult in the way where his ult did nothing, his W was at best okay, and his Q was underwhelming. I felt they could’ve made his kit better, but they did a good job in creating something way more cohesive and playable (although way too playable.)
Skarner and Shyv have similar issues where their one saving grace in their kit was decent at best and made their strengths overwhelmingly situational. The reason Riot reworks champion’s kits, at least 90% of the time, is to increase playability as well as give them an identity with clear strengths and weaknesses without one being too much to tip the scale. ASol was always super fun, but for the majority of the playerbase his damage output as well as effectiveness was just way too limited onto one ability.
He needed the rework, but it’s understandable to not like it. Riot could’ve done some things better when creating his kit, but they did an amazing job with emulating his power-fantasy in-game.

After having taken a step back from the League community, (in terms of playing the game), it has made me realize a lot more about the characters.
Something interesting about Aurelion Sol: if you check the A. Sol reddit they all meme on how bad the rework is. I find this funny as hell since everyone agreed that prework A. Sol was underwhelming and unfun. They always wanted a rework but when they shifted his identity they said it wasn't good enough. I can understand not wanting things to change but it made me realize many players in the fanbase want something but will never be happy with what they get. It feels HIGHLY akin to the Aatrox rework, where despite it being objectively better aesthetically and fluidly, it just isnt the same and you realize what they want is for the same exact champion to be broken. Cause lets face it old A.Sol was never going to be crazy good unless Riot decided to make him OP. Just wanted to talk about the negativity of the reception.

    @x-nimator9997 ปีที่แล้ว +5

I love Aurelion's cgu as well. It didn't lose what aurelion is, it augmented him. It finally realized his true power fantasy. Free from the restrain of some puny stars that barely did any damage that was a burden for the team. I know proffesionals proved that it was useful, but that didn't really helped the case since one wanted to try and the result was dying over and over because akali/yasuo/irelia/any champion with 2000 dashes would just swoop in and kill in 2 moves without giving you time to even react.
I can understand if the old mains loved his clunky old gameplay, but it was harmful for the character at the end of the day. You put it in the right words, he was frustrating to use. At least now aurelion is fun to play, has more pickrate and riot will pay more atention to him in the skin department, finally showing that monster champions can be just as popular as your average sexy human champion.

As someone whose most played champ was pre rework Sol, my feelings regarding the update are a bit complicated.
On one hand, I'm happy that there's a ton of people like you, that find him very fun, and I don't approve of all the old Sol mains that said nasty stuff about the rework and the people that like it. (If you've been to the Sol mains subreddit while the rework was happening, you know what I'm talking about. Things were a bit... rough :/)
But on the other, I find it ridiculous that Riot thinks that kits being unpopular is a completely valid reason to remove them. Yes, I am aware that they've been doing it for a while, and that it resulted in a ton of amazing new champs, but removing stuff that wasn't having a harmful effect on the game is frankly... dumb, and it has always been dumb (case in point - Treeline and Dominion).
Especially when you consider the fact that there's a bunch of champs that the community absolutely despises, but their kits aren't being erased, because they're popular and "iconic", like Malphite.
This becomes even more apparent when you compare League's reworks to the DotA ones. League had numerous complete kit deletions (Aatrox, Aurelion Sol, Yorick, Mordekaiser, Galio, Urgot, etc), whereas DotA only had one, who was literally the most annoying and unhealthy character to ever exist in a MOBA (I'm talking about Techies, of course).
That game didn't remove Chen's ability to mind control creeps, or Elder Titan's very slow but powerful delayed Q and ultimate, or Lone Druid's bear companion that can use items. These gimmicks make said characters difficult to approach and not as satisfying as options with simple but powerful spells like Lion or Legion Commander, yes, but they add very unique niches that a few people might find interesting and fun. And you can definitely afford to have a ton of these kinds of characters in a roster as big as League's and DotA's.
Forcing champion design to stay within the constraints of what makes a popular champion is limiting towards creativity, and is what results in champs like wet Samira, edgy Yasuo, pink haired Sona, or manta ray Master Yi. (Alright, I know that Nilah, Yone, Seraphine and Bel'Veth aren't exactly like those champs, but you get the point. And Riot's rework philosophy is partially the reason why people look at these champs as 2.0 of versions of different ones, because they would absolutely be valid reworks, when you consider that Poppy and Sion literally switched classes).
Thankfully, Aurelion Sol has sort of managed to avoid the fate of being a second version of a different champ, but Riot's reasoning behind the rework really rubbed me the wrong way, and the fact that he's so simple, but still sort of overloaded certainly doesn't help.
At the end of the day, game design is a matter of upsides and downsides, and if your enjoyment of the champ overshadows the downsides, then that's absolutely valid. After all, who am I to tell you what you're allowed to find fun in a video game?
But old Aurelion Sol was cool, fair, fun and satisfying, goddammit, and it 100% had a place in the game (and I'm not just saying that because I'm a masochist that enjoys the thrill of beating meta champs with stuff that's considered weak... though that might have been a contributor). If only Riot would have touched his waveclear and roaming to make him weaker in high elo, and get him buffed in low :(

There is one thing I disagree with here. Asol's old kit wasn't healthy, in fact it's the very reason he got repeatedly nerfed for years, then nerfed into the ground even more with his "rework" back in season... 10 I believe.
The core identity of Asol's kit in terms of how you win games, was shove and roam, and it was effective to such a ridiculous degree that the few people ready to put in the hours to get past his clunky kit, were playing with an absurd snowball advantage, no matter how trash he would get in the 1v1, as long as he could impact the map, he would forever be broken conceptually speaking. A champion with one of the most clunky yet most broken kits eve released wasn't healthy, but he was unique and had to suffer utter neglect for 6 years because of it.

    • @cosmicbard6998
      @cosmicbard6998 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yeah, I suppose that's a good point.
Though you do have a pretty short range, so walking up to waveclear can put you at risk of being engaged on by an assassin, and poke mages can safely lower your health to discourage you from roaming, and make you waste time with recalls instead. But if you're fighting Sol as another midrange control mage (Swain, Neeko, Karthus, TF, Taliyah, Vex, Lissandra etc), then yeah, you're gonna have an extremely rough time, unless the dragon heavily misplays.
This is largely a result of just how amazing he was at waveclearing and roaming. If you're playing someone who can stop him from doing that, you've essentially got yourself a free lane, but if you're playing someone who can't, then Sol is gonna contest everything with his jungler, while ganking both sidelanes non stop, and trying to stop him will get you stunned and pummeled to death by his minion wave, all the while yours is getting booped to death.
I definitely wouldn't say that this was an unfixable issue, but Riot sort of gave up on trying to fix it, immediately after the first mini rework failed to do so (though that did address his excessive level 1, and his 0 loss recall spam, but it unfortunately wasn't enough).
His abilities are conceptually very interactive, and allow for the player to pull off impressive plays, while still giving the enemy enough options of counterplay. It's just that players figured out how to make it uninteractive, but he was too unpopular for Riot to work on addressing that, which left him as one of those champs that can't be buffed for low elo, due to his performance in higher ranks (where players actually know their own limits, and know how to avoid jungle ganks, both of which are absolutely crucial for Sol to do well).
I still wouldn't call him a Techies, and there's countless other League champs that are leagues (no pun intended) more unhealthy than he was. He wasn't perfect, but he wasn't in the "KILL IT WITH FIRE!" category either.
If you're a high elo player, he's definitely more healthy now, as the rework has turned him into a low elo menace instead. But is that more healthy for the game overall? I don't really know, honestly. I haven't exactly played a ton of League since his rework, so I don't have enough experience to be able to tell (being a mid elo player also results in the possibility of my games being terrorized both by the likes of Jayce and the likes of Nasus, so there's that). But at least his roam problem seems to be gone, so that's a plus for sure.

Whilst I like the new direction they went with Asol's kit, and I think it better fits what people want out of a space dragon champion, it's never really gonna scratch the same itch old Asol did for me. I am in the small minority of people who used to play him a lot, and before the infamous nerfs, I thought he was in a totally balanced spot. His gameplay was incredibly niche and different, so learning to make him work was probably the most fulfilling experience I have gotten out of this game. Even though he technically still has some of the same moves as before, he now plays nothing like the original way he was intended.
While I'm very glad that lots of people get to have the version of the character they always wanted, I can't help but wish they had given him some simple fixes and then just gave his reworked kit to a new, original champion instead.

To be fair, old asol isnt fitted for current day league. Their are a thousand dashes, to the point that lifting the insta q lock restriction didnt helped a lot.
They would need to look at the ability and really rework it to make it work,to add 200 years to it, if you may.
I always though he should have an inner circle, one that goes to the middle with his w, while the normal circle stays in the same w active range. That would remove a lot of the damage the thousand dashes did to asol haha,
Other things they could do to old asol would have been like, making the number of stars scale, like it did in urf.
At least that is what i would have done to him, obviously the numbers would need some tweaks, but i think that would let him be playable to new players and still a fun character to otp him

@@konabos747 yeah dont get me wrong, old asol is still playable, but you only find success after playing lots of games with him. I also loved playing him, and kinda want him back( as a new champ to also keep current asol xd).
But the problem is that a new player would try him because his lore and design are cool, and they are going to turbo feed the enemy akali without being able to trade back. So they will never pick him up ever again.
The ability was design in a time where zed was the trickiest champ( in terms of dashes) and their werent many champs with insane mobility. Now a days though, their is a tank that dashes lots of times to 1v1 the adc and come out on top.
That is where my first idea came in. Having a tiny circle of "baby stars" that are basically on top of him( with severely reduced damage of course) would help him trade against those dashes. Obviously if he only uses those he wont kill them, but that is where the ult w would finish what the baby stars started.
The second idea would be to try to reward mastering his positioning more. While each individual star would deal less damage( lets say that instead of +25% ap they deal +20% or something like that), he would end up with more dps because he would hit more often with more stars.
Im sure that the aurelions OTP could come with better ideas, but those were mine, a player that got up to 30k( which is nothing, but given how i play everything and my highest mastery is 89k it is kinda a lot for an extremely casual player xd)

I mained the old ASol and while it's true that his power fantasy wasn't fulfilled with the old kit, I think there was something so unique and challenging that made him fun to learn. You needed to erase your knowledge of how mages traded and learn to manage the lane with your stars, and once you did, you were the most powerful level 1 mage because you were free to roam the whole map at level 2. Not being able to hide in bushes also made it so you had to use the map and other strategies to gank.
The new kit is great, feels very satiafying to play... But it makes SO sad and frustrated that, as a player, I was left out by Riot in the sense that, from one day to the next, everything I loved about the champion, everything I spent my time to learn when barely anyone was playing ASol and (therefore) you barely had any guides to help you on getting started... It was all deemed trash. And yeah, suddenly I queued in ARAM, I got my fav champion and it felt so different (starting from the moment multiple players were asking for it when before, nobody would pick him). Now every midlaner plays it and it's great that he got the recognition he deserved, but as an old main, I feel like I can't pick him up because playing as the new ASol feels worse (in the sense that I'm expecting to find something, ANYTHING from the old one) than if Riot had told me they had deleted him from the game. It may sound ridiculous (especially so long after the update) but it feels true to me.
Also, can we talk about why the hell his old E got changed to the new W?? Couldn't they keep it in the same slot since is functionally the same and place the new ability on the old W????

As much as I do feel like Asol needed the rework, I also feel like it doesn't work like it should when it comes to the gameplay. Yes, it may be more accurate to the lore, but it doesn't feel like it fits to have a power fantasy as a champion in a game where you need to have balance.
Asol can be behind for the biggest part of a game, only to come back later on with really high amounts of damage since his scaling is obscene. As much as the old champion was really niche and barely played, it seems like the rework overtuned him insanely to force him into player's hands.
It may be that or the fact that champions nowadays need to follow a ruleset that makes you play the game from a couple screens away as everything has a dash, an extra flash, some form of hard cc or anything else that makes it unplayable against.
Even then, my opinion only, and hey, even after 4 years I'm nowhere near as experienced as most of the playerbase, so in the end I may well be completely mistaken.

his new Q is probably the ability I
most hate in the game simply because Aurelion fucking Sol would NEVER be reduced to spitting a puny shitty flame breath
if he breathed something it should be as large as the lane and absolutely change the fight

Can't he just remove the crown since he's all powerful? Or is the crown more powerful than him

Well first of all, I just need to point out that new aurelion is braindead af. You sit back farm for 20 min every game and then just win with numbers later on in the game. What used to be a cool dps battlemage that had a unique playstyle got reworked into this new beta Bsol that just sits still and presses q and just wins.
Secondly, while ofc not every asol main wanted the same thing, a majority of the asol community just wanted old asol (perma w mana drain asol), which was the asol we all loved. And yes that had some problems cause of his flight ability that turned him into the roaming demon he was back then. But many of us just wanted to rework his flight ability so he doesn't lose his cool and unique battle style, but instead changing what really was the problem to begin with. Instead riot minireworked him the worst possible way and gave him more power to his flight, and less power to his way of dealing damage that forced him to be a really weak combatant, because of one powerful ability.
Could talk about this for ages, but my point is to bring out the perspective of some of us old asol enjoyers, and make us not to be seen as people who never would have gotten happy no matter what riot would have done. We would have been happy riot didnt handle this the worst way possible

Ok but old asol is just. Not fun to play with.
Skill means nothing if an akali or irelia or yasuo just spams 1 ability and kills you before you can react. And the stars weren't even a good mechanic. At least now you can have fun with him.
Old asol is still in wild rift and is just one of the most unfun champions in the game. Not boring, but just frustrating to use. And it sucks because i adore his design and personality but i can't enjoy him.

@X - nimator not every champ should be designed for everyone. By your logic, let's just make singed be just another traditional top lane bruiser.

Well what version of aurelion that is most fun to play differs from person to person, but I find it a lot more fun to having to invest time to master the arts of old aurelion were you have to kite, position and be more creative rather than pressing e on waves until min 20 and to only having to hold your cursor above a champion and press q and just win
And on your skill statement. Surviving yasuos and akalis was very hard for aurelion at times yes, but those were spesific matchups you could learn by playing him a lot games on him. The more i played him, the easier it was playing against those champions, so i think skill matters against assasins and windshitters

How they make a crown big enough to Asol?
