Thanks for the information. I think I'm going to go the Outpatient/Physician based route now instead of Inpatient. I had enough of the Hospital. Respiratory Therapist for 30 years and Degree in HIM. Getting the Cert in Billing/Coding now as a refresher due to years out of the field. Fingers crossed someone will want me after getting Certified :-)
D Comly I am actually starting a Health Information Technician program this fall. I was first going to Respiratory Therapy first but decided to do the HIT program first. Can I ask why you are changing careers? Thanks.
Hi. Thank you for your video and advice. Can anyone tell me what would be a good choice to work from home/remotely, AHIMA CCA or AAPC CPC? I am homebound/restricted. Are there homebased openings and opportunities immediately after getting certified? Anyone please let me know, I would be grateful. I was a doctor physician many years ago in Asia then moved to USA over 10 years now by the way so any advice related to location or experience would also be helpful. I could not pursue medical residency and missed that opportunity because I'm a very old graduate and I am pretty sure no residency program will accept me. I am middle aged and have long gaps in employment as well as changing jobs. Disabled.
You don’t need a degree in order to sit for a coding certification exam. Just check out the AAPC website or AHIMA website for learning resources prior to taking the exam.
Hi! I have multiple degrees and don't want to waste any more time getting another degree. Can I obtain medical coding books and manuals, and then just sit for the test? Can you do this? or do you have to have a degree in medical coding please? I really appreciate your making this awesome video that is so helpful. Thank you.
Hi Bernadette - if you want to see if you have enough knowledge to pass the exam I reccomend you take a timed practice exam and see how you score. We have a free one on our site (see link in comments above). If you score over an 85 you're ready for the real thing. If you score close to a 70 then a review course would be wise. And if you do very poorly then a full coding course would be in order. Visit our discussion forum to see how others have done it. Happy Studying!
I guess what I am asking is, can I simply buy the books, study on my own without having on the job training and then sit for the test as a viable means to pass and get the job? I value your opinion. Thanks! I appreciate your answering.
can I go straight for my CPC-H instead of my CPC after I graduate from my medical billing/Coding program that is accredited by AAPCA/AHIMA? Also how long before I can go for my CPC-A?
+vanessa redmond Many thanks, I been tryin to find out about "cpc certified medical coder" for a while now, and I think this has helped. Hi I'm about to to my certification test this year around late April early May I was wondering if you could or have any study guides or tips or advice how to prep to take the exam? I was looking which I should take as well and decided to go with the AAPC based on how their website is set up compared to AHIMA and your TH-cam channels. Thanks for that and I hope to hear from you about the study guides and tips you have.
The standards have been CPC for physician coding. CCS for Hospital coding. A degree and credentialing/ licensing in health Information management (RHIT/ RHIA) or nursing will also help greatly with getting your foot in the door.
