ABANDONED WOODHAVEN STATION (LIRR)

  • The Woodhaven Station sits on the Atlantic Branch of the Long Island Rail Road. The station and line were originally built in 1848 as a street grade railroad and were electrified in 1905. The old station closed in 1939, as plans were made to sink the old tracks into a tunnel that would run under Atlantic Avenue. The station would remain but would be rebuilt as a newer and more modern underground station with tile fonts similar to the ones used on New York City Transit IND lines during that time. The currently shown platforms were opened in 1942. Just west of the station, there still are the remnants of the tunnel that led trains from this line to merge with the elevated tracks of the Rockaway Beach Branch running perpendicular to this station. The underground Woodhaven station also had a connection to the Woodhaven Junction station overhead, which closed in 1962, and ultimately led to lower ridership from this station as well. It closed permanently in 1976, however trains pass by it every day at very high speeds, with passengers unaware of its presence. As always, thank you for watching, and if you enjoyed the video, be sure to like, and subscribe for more videos like these!

    Not long after the station closed, kids broke into the ticket office (yes there is a ticket office), and dragged the office safe onto the platform, dumping it onto the tracks. They figured it was full of money, a train would hit it, smash it open and they would collect the booty. A train hit it alright, at 70 MPH and it bounced off every column, the ceiling and the train for a mile and a half.
    After the usual response of the cops, trainmaster and track department folks, the thing was hoisted back up onto the train where it was brought back to the platform.
    The kids dumped it in front of the next train.
    This time it was brought to Jamaica where it was dumped in Dunton and lays today almost fifty years later...

      The ticket office was in the underpass beneath the tracks; the tower was behind the ticket office. Across from the office also in the underpass was the waiting room. All are blocked up now.@@UzziHD

    That brought back memories 👍 I used to go exploring in that station back in the 60s. We’d walk the tracks or the ledge down the tunnel for awhile and come out the emergency exit around 113th st. Also went to the west to see the other tracks where they veered off as you said. I was in the neighborhood in the 80s and broke in thru the hatch and went exploring again for the last time. Got the adrenaline pumping. Would love to do it again but I’m getting older and can’t run and dodge trains like I used to. Plus surveillance cameras alarms police etc. Really enjoyed that. Thank You 👌✌️ Peace

      We were walking on the ledge a distance from the station a few times when a train came. We’d find a cutout or indentation in the wall and brace against the wall when it went by. Scary but what a rush!

    • @georgesekavec1020
      @georgesekavec1020 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@garytoro2 is that really the only way in? Is it safe enough that there’s enough indentations? Also how deep are the indentations if you have a backpack etc

    • @garytoro2
      @garytoro2 3 ปีที่แล้ว +6

      @@georgesekavec1020 The only way I know to get in is thru the emergency hatch at 100st. Or any other hatch such as 113st. Tunnel starts at 125st or thereabouts. You can see the lights shining on the rails before the train gets to you and you should have time to find a cutout. Some were a few feet deep. I don’t remember where they were but if you pass one remember where it was just it case you have to go back to it. I think some were for electrical equipment. We used to hang out at one or two on the eastbound side of the tracks to the west of the station. Almost got caught there by workers once. This was also a long time ago. Before cameras and alarms. I also always went with friends except the last time. It was a spur of the moment decision and I was by myself. Really got the adrenaline pumping! Hope that helps. Good luck!

    This station really mimicked the IND Subway.
    Those IND-type tiling just really gives it a NYC Subway feel.
    Great Video, enjoyed it!

    • @fh4709
      @fh4709 3 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      The reason why this station has IND tilling (as well as east new York station *sort of*) is because originally the LIRR back in the day were so broke that they wanted to abandoned service west of Jamaica and have the subway take over (presumably the IND) Which would explain the IND like tiles

    • @davezanko9051
      @davezanko9051 2 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      It was less that and more that the stretch of the Atlantic Branch that includes this station and East New York was grade separated and moved below ground instead of running on the surface in 1942, around the same time the IND lines were under construction, so it's similar architecturally.
      Now, part of the reason for the grade separation was the possibility of the Subway taking over the line, but that wasn't the motivation for the similar look.

    Thanks for sharlng this video! i haven't been down there in decades. Back in the day it was really creepy. The whole station was lit up by a 25 watt bulb. Lots of dark shadows. My mother and i would wait upstairs and then would run down the stairs when we heard the train coming. But just a really creepy place to be.

    Another excellent video! Be careful in all of those crazy rooms and stairways you never know who's hiding in there, and the reason those lights are blinking is because they are high pressure sodium light fixtures, when those bulbs reach the end of their life they just keep cycling for quite some time until they finally burn out

    I was never on a train that actually stopped here in my 1960s travels. Few did. Thanks for this look. On a train, I always keep my eyes open for Woodhaven, but at 70 or 80 mph, you catch nothing. I caught a lot this time. I never saw a way to get down to this station post-closure. My first attempt was in 1980. The station overhead, above street level, yes. But not this underground one. However you did it, nice going. And maybe doing it just this once is enough.

    Those lights are "HID" or better known as high pressure sodium. They normally shine a bright orange/yellow glow. Probably 150 - 250 watts. They are "cycling", which is why they're turning on/off. The bulb itself is dying and doesn't have the required amount of sodium needed to keep the luminaire illuminated. It's normal. Some dim, some burn off the remaining mercury (blue dim) and some die.
