Dimitar was born in Sliven (Islimiye), which was then part of the Ottoman Empire, into the family of the merchant Nikola. Asenov and his wife Marinka Asenova. When he was two years old, his family went on a pilgrimage to Jerusalem, from which point Dimitar was considered a pilgrimage. During the summer of 1862, Hadji Dimitar wandered along the Balkan Mountains with a group of revolutionaries.
He joined his group as a standard bearer in 1864. The group consisted of twelve people and was formed after the murder of the Greek bishop of Veliko Tarnovo. However, he dispersed before entering the city, and its members separated from their leaders. Hadzhi Dimitar assumed command and led the group to the Balkan Mountains near Sliven and then to Romania in August.
