@@synhet84 Yep.. Andy is a legend.. he kept it a lot closer than the large majority of players did. Plus, being a fixture in the top 10 during such a competitive era is really impressive.
Agassi had such a control over his backhand shots, easily changed direction and length of the shots with his backhand. Played his opponent often at baseline.
It’s really incredible how great Agassi was in Summer 2004, despite his age. Won Cinci, beating Roddick and Hewitt back to back. Then took Federer to 5 sets in USO QF. He seriously could have won USO that year had Federer not been nearly unbeatable at 3 of the 4 majors at that time.
Agassi had the cleanest ground strokes of any player. I often wonder what the outcome of Agassi v Djokovic would be. Maybe no-one else could beat him down for consistency on the baseline and work the point
Agassi would lose more often than not. But he would win some too. People who come up with these hypotheticals always act so extreme. If Djoko never played Alcatraz (let’s say he retired in 2021), there would definitely be all these people saying “Alcatraz would get destroyed by Djokovic” or the opposite. These are just social media fans..in reality the truth is in between. I would say a guy like Agassi, in the same era as Djokovic, would probably have a slightly better record than Murray against him. If they played 40 times I suspect the H2H would be like 26-14 for Novak. But again, there’s no way to know and there’s a million variables that can never be accounted for. However Agassi himself was Novak’s coach and said “the highest level tennis I’ve ever seen is when Novak is playing his best tennis.” If they played each other, I’m sure they’d produce some great matches.
Fun hypothetical there. I'd still give it to Djokovic since he's really not got any weak point in his game, every shot he has is at least an A- level, while Agassi at net wasn't that great. But seeing the 2 best returners of all time playing each other would be interesting, turns the service games into some serious mind games.
I'd say 2004 was the last year Roddick hit his forehand really hard consistently, years later and I mean years, in 2024, Andy was discussing Dominic Thiem's wrist injury that was career ending and he said he could understand Theinm's mindset because he once could really hit his own forehand super hard then a shoulder injury happened and he had to dance around with a little spinny McDo (his words) forehand instead of his main weapon that he had in his late teens and early 20s all that plus the emergence of the Big Three and their 66 Slams and counting tally, that was some tough waters to swim in.
Roddick had a great forehand at this time which could have been the difference in '09 Wimbledon. He switched to loopy topspin to stay in the top 10 for 10 years. Hard to stop 5 years of habits during Wimbledon final.

These were the early days of top spin being the main weapon for most baseliners. Most players still used a traditional Eastern grip, whereas some moved to the Semi-Western. Nowadays, spin is the main tool players use with most of the men and women's tours using a full Western grip, and more spin allows them to him the ball much harder as it will still land in court because of the high spin. In these days, with the shots more flat, they couldn't risk hitting the ball as hard because there wouldn't be enough spin to pull the ball back to the court.
Agassi crushes the ball, you can even see it now when he practices. I don’t think his ground stroke speed would be out of place in today’s game. Probably just lower RPMs.
