Senses influence each other and by extension the whole sensation of a fragrance. Between eyes and nose it’s a story of impatience, jealousy, harmony and exaggeration. And that’s why we like to spoil them over & over.

Oooh, excellent topic. I'm a sucker for exquisitely designed packaging. Gets me every time!!! Yes Sir. But yes, I agree with you on that color psychology angle. I'm drawn to 💙 and 🤎 and those heavy glass bases. Tactile features are starting to draw me in. I recently spotted a plain Valentine's day mug in a store. It was black with fuschia pink lettering.... basic. But there was something about the matte look of it from afar. Once I picked it up and felt it, I was sold 🥰

It's actually so true. They play with our minds from the start. Don't even get to smell them and you already know. I do love a nice looking bottle where you can tell they took their time in designing it and if it matches the scent, even better. It's nice to have great juice with a great presentation. I'll spray out of anything but I'd rather have something that is intriguing, mysterious, interesting.

The bottle design does make a difference to me. If the bottle doesn't appeal to my eye, the scent would really have to wow me. Now Im not big on the box presentation. its nice, but since we just put the boxes away and don't really look at them, its not as important.
How about doing a list on the scents that spark the best memory, of an event or of a person. Clean scents always remind me of my grandfather. even in his late 90's before he pasted he would never leave the house without a nice cologne. I also think about him, when getting a straight razor shave, he always shaved with a straight razor an a shave soap. What was the scent you wore at your wedding or a 1st date. IL'Eau d'Issey always reminds me of a trip to jamica where I had one of the best times ever.

I'm in the category of people that don't care about the bottle design or presentation at all. I get influenced more from people like you. Then I look into the fragrances from other reviewers and then head straight to Fragrantica to dissect it some more and compare them to other fragrances and specific fragrance notes. Once I'm convinced, I'll place an order immediately.

Looking at my collection. Yes I’m influenced by the look of a bottle. Prada lhomme feels so good in my hand. Thick glass, leather backing(synthetic) the name on the bottle shines with even a tiny bit of light. I don’t think it influences my purchases but it influences what I end up grabbing out of my collection many times.

I agree, non-price/scent factors tend to influence consumers' purchasing decisions. 'By Kilian' and 'Initio Parfums Privés' instantly come to mind as brands that influence consumers' decisions as far as bottle design and naming conventions are concerned.

Love the analysis Justin. This is touching the core of marketing. Packaging has to be appealing to encourage people to go for the product be it perfume chocolate, beverages or even olive oil. It affects everyone consciously or subliminally, humans are very visual, some more than other. For example, I think the design of JPG's Le Male series (not a fan myself) is one the main reasons many younger people went for it when it was first released in the mid 1990s. Personally I have very high respect for MEMO, ARGOS and PENHALIGON'S for customizing each bottle with elements that directly relate to the scent. You just fall in love with the brand before even smelling the scent.

Another great video!! Can you do a video of batch codes/ so-called discontinued rumors . Is there any real difference in batches, and why would there be? Also, has a company ever released an official statement, stating a fragrance was reformulated or that a fragrance was going to be discontinued. I feel like a fragrance can come out this year, and a month later, people are stating batch numbers and reformulation, and it might be discontinued .

  • @berenddevries74

Great content as usual Justin. Perfect examples you gave us with each aspect.
The most important to me is the liquid itself. If I don't like the perfume, the bottle doesn't matter at all. For me bottles only matter in a way that they have to fit within my collection. Yes, it's a OCPD-light thing, but to me that matters. I don't mind if the bottle is round or square, has a plastic cap or metal with a magnet, what label it has or if the letters are just put on the bottle like Chanel or Cartier does. It either has to be a black bottle, or a clear bottle with yellow liquid in it and it has to stand up right.
But like I sayed; first the perfume itself, after that the bottle design. The box... I trow it away after opening, so it only has to keep the bottle safe from breaking.

I feel like I'm very influenced by the looks of fragrances. And I recognize this about myself. Of course, the most important thing is the smell itself. But, since I'm most likely going to have these bottles for a long time, I like to be able to look at it and be pleased by its aesthetic. So, I think I'm okay with being manipulated a little bit. But just a little bit.

It's important how it looks and feels. I always appreciate beautiful glasswork. I would even say that there are some good fragrances that I don't want because I don't like the bottle. At least I hesitate if I don't like the bottle. On the other hand I don't think I have bought a fragrance just for the bottle. I can't say it doesn't matter, esthetic is important.

I'm influenced more by visual, but I feel in a way that.most aren't (at least for 1 of the ways). Like you, I'm drawn to a beautiful, rich Ambery colour when it comes to the juice. The different part is I'm turned away by what I would consider tacky or juvenile looking bottles (Toy Boy, Bad Boy, JPG, etc). I won't even smell those fragrances in fear that I'll like them while knowing that I'll never buy them.
As always, I love the content, Justin. Great stuff, to say the least.

  • @justaddlight

Great job on the vid Justin! 🧡 I wonder if strong magnets or tight caps can be a detriment sometimes by potentially adding an upward force on the collar or crimping every time the cap is removed. After hundreds of pulls can it potentially be a factor in compromising the seal at the top of the bottle? But yeah, if I were to guess what influences us the most, it might be our personal perception of the fragrance's extrinsic social value. Presentation and marketing has different effects on different people, but it's more difficult to escape repetition. That's why social media campaigns can be so effective. Consumers sure do like novelty. Colour would be my number 2!

I like to think I’m more utilitarian but to some extend it might influence a decision. I sample, so… I don’t think bottle color or shape matters a lot. However, space is the limiting factor on my shelves, so big bottles (which you never finish anyway) are at a disadvantage when deciding if something is full bottle worthy. Also the ridiculous sky scraper versions of Serge Lutens… sorry, that just does not fit anywhere. Still, if something is really good, decided by scent, it is FBW (like some 100 ml Jovoy and Amouage)… So, partly, shape and size…

Believe it or not I used to just buy decants of expensive fragrances and then I will look up reviews online and see which clone has had the best version of it. And with the clown houses all of their bottles are exactly the same so I never really gave a care about the bottles design but slowly I learned that not all bottle qualities were the same so the atomizers played a big role into the brands that I will buy. Then I found out about Middle Eastern fragrances and that's when I actually started to care about bottle design because for the first time my collection started to look different. I started to like picking out bottles based on how to bottle instead of having to lift up every bottle to read what it said on the bottle to know what I was wearing. Then I started buying the actual niche bottles of some of my favorite fragrances and I must admit I do care about the bottle design but not as an influencer of whether or not I will buy the fragrance

  • @extraordinary_scents6806

And yes, visual and tactile factors do affect my buying habits. With thousands of brands and hundreds of new releases a year it’s difficult to choose where to give your attention. In my case, I currently only desire high-quality fragrances so I narrow the field by consuming fragrance content and by prejudging quality by observing the elements discussed in the video. That doesn’t mean I won’t try anything it’s just less likely to make on my radar.

I wouldn't say it would influence my purchase but inevitably it does-- the highest quality juice generally comes in high quality containers... Roja... Amouage... Even indies like zaharoff and bogue have great packaging... But I am into a few vintage goodies like Chanel no 19 extrait and Dior - Miss Dior extrait and the pkg is quality, albeit dated.... So I do make an effort to see past that and not judge the book by its cover (for example: Chypre Siam by Rogue-- one of the BEST fragrances i own in one of the worst bottles (and worst caps and worst boxes) proudly on my shelf (right next to Diaghilev and Gold Man, Which are two of the BEST packages on the market in my opinion...) Great video...

design has to make sense, try to imagine a Tom Ford leather frag in a Lacoste bottle. Or Lacoste bottled as Neanderthal Them. That said, I love the Valentino Uomo and Born in Roma line and I feel their packaging is completely incongruent with their product. The juice is charming and elegant and the bottles are like punk rock bracelets and jewelry from the 80s/90s. One brand that plays with packaging well is Moschino; I like some of their scents and would borrow some from the ladies collection if I decide to reach for something sweet. I find their presentations witty. On the flip side, I find Paco Rabane's presentations extremely tacky and I don't want a gold bar or a trophy or a robot sitting on my shelf. I love getting a good frag in a good bottle. I love the jovoy bottles the Guerlain bottles I think are great. I also love my simple bottle of Chanel Sycamore they just have a great look and feel to them. Also I naught add that I’m actually looking at my bottles I think I enjoy my Aqua di Parma bottles as well. I love the shape the simple caps they make me happy. One of my more disappointing bottles is MDCI invasion Barbare initially I bought the the bottle without the resin bust as I have read online looks nicer then it feels in the hand. My bottle comes with a flimsy plastic cap that slides into place as beautiful as the actual bottle is the cap sort of kills it for such and expensive self taunted brand. So now that I’m nearly finished with the bottle I’ve decided to purchase the Silk Road edition of invasion Barbare. The bottle looks stunning with a gold cap and and silver adorned artwork on the front of the bottle. However when I received it the bottle itself is a bit wavy and the cap that looked so special online is yet again a light plastic cover. I must say despite this. Invasion is my absolute favorite formal fragrance. Along side beau du jour sycomore and Amouage beloved man. Justin a review on Invasion would be great to see.
