    Despite all the technology available to the modern military, flight maneuvers are still often taught with model planes on the ends of sticks. It's easier to show 3 dimensional movements in 3 dimensions than in 2.

    Starting from scratch is hard… it’s really cool that you share these simplified yet detailed combat moves and tactics.
    Now that I watch your videos, I have a plan that I try to follow when I engage an enemy ship.

  • @Baleur
    @Baleur 2 ปีที่แล้ว +12

    12:55 one easy trick i found to understand me and my targets relative movement, when using lag pip, is to simply look where the pip is.
    If the lag pip is BELOW your center crosshair (or rather, his ship), that means your (plural) relative movement is that you are moving DOWN.
    In that case, using your bottom thrusters to thrust UP, moves the pip UP.
    If your pip is to the left, you're drifting left, and thrusting RIGHT moves the pip RIGHT towards center.
    If the pip is centered, you've got a low transversal, or moving straight towards / away from him.
    If you're using lead pips, its reversed, so the pip would be ABOVE him, when you're moving DOWN, and you have to thrust UP to get the pip to move DOWN. This is another reason why lag pip is much more intuitive besides allowing eyes on target.
    Everyone knows this intuitively, but knowing it conciously allows you to see, in a freeze frame, exactly how the people are moving even when looking at a screenshot.

    To teach more precisely with this kind of ship motions, a VR room would be perfect...

      3d models or even a 3rd person filming your movements vs your opponent's? Hard to visualize what your doing from your view. Great work btw

    • @IceCall
      @IceCall 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@ro-mon_gerrs_u-tube1944 No exactly, I mean more about a Virtual Reality room that would permit to A1 to provide to the viewers a way more understanding of the maneuvers. By drawing the fight situation with preexisting 3D ships models and by changing from different angle of views the fight perspective, it would permit to explain even more complex movements and provide a better 3D awareness of the engagements. But you right, the job done here is already excellent and we are more toking about continuous improvement in the way of the 1% every day! ;-)

      @@AgnosiaAgnosis In à virtual room, you have a 3d paperboard and all things you drow can be displayed from the angle choice of the presenter. No need to be in VR to watch the result as it is perfectly displayed in 2d like any paperboard. I had the chance to participate to live debriefing that way and since 2008, that was one of best experience ever in term of immersion and understanding of complex manœuvres. Some paperboard like a PowerPoint, permits to add some motions etc...

  • @vahnn0
    @vahnn0 3 ปีที่แล้ว +17

    EVE Online taught me about this. You want to maintain high transversal velocity. In other words, you want to be moving as fast as possible in a plane perpendicular to his vision, but more importantly, perpendicular to his point of aim.
    A high transversal velocity means you are moving quickly from left to right (or top to bottom) in his field of view, increasing the distance he has to lead in order to land his shots. A low transversal means you are moving slowly in either of these directions.
    However in this latter case, it's important to note that this speed is *relative to the target!* You can be moving very, very fast but still have a low transversal velocity; i.e. if you're flying straight at him at 1200 m/s. You're moving very fast, but from his perspective, he can aim his guns at a single point and hit you easily with every shot because you're not moving laterally.
    Dogfighting is all about maximizing your transversal velocity when the opponent is able to aim at you (making yourself harder to hit) while at the same time limiting the opponent's ability to maintain high transversal velocity when you're able to aim (making it easier for you to hit him), through positioning and timing of your turning maneuvers.

    • @hellogoodbye388
      @hellogoodbye388 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Correct, and in atmo this will be bad as you bleed speed and energy like more normal dogfighting but with 6 degrees of freedom. This implications need to be added soon so there is varied dogfighting and will give traditional dogfights an edge in atmo.

    Watching through the core skills videos I feel like this is one of the most useful ones yet. The segment about 19 minutes in where you talk about the branching decision paths based on the opponent's flight path gave a ton of context to the conversation in prior videos, where it wasn't really clear who was doing what or where they were moving or when you'd go which direction. They're all informative but many of the others are more "here's what an S-turn is, do it when " but is not nearly as clear as it is in this video. The extra context here is fantastic!

    Because you're keeping your keeping your trajectory in line behind the targets direction of movement you're not increasing the angles, if you put your flight path on or in front of him then the angles will be increasing. Kind of like in a plane but spaceships can aim at each other independent of movement.

    Man just picked up Star Citizen, this video is great. Reminds me of EvE Online, where you had to constantly track your angular velocity against the enemy ships. Especially if they were larger (as a larger ship can't track you), but if your angular velocity is zero, the largest ships could smoke you in a single volley. Just working out if I wanna dump £300 into a HOTAS or not now lol

    I feel like I am teetering on the edge of grokking this stuff. I get wiped by good pilots and I'm starting to understand why. It's that sense of relative position in 3D space I need to work on.
    Just to clear this up: We want to be on the outside of the flight path to achieve control, and this may require rolling and using the bottom thrusters (lift and twist?). Calling it an 'S turn' is really just naming what happens if you string two or more of these position correcting lift and twists together to compensate for the enemy's projected path.
    Close?
    Thanks for sharing. This is the stuff my character will remember as their military combat training.

    What I see all the time is people in Light Fighters will match turns with you and try to slug it out blow for blow. I've actually questioned for a moment, "Is this an NPC?" whenever I see a player do this as it's almost as stupid as the NPCs fly. This totally negates the biggest advantage your Light Fighter has as you are no longer using your greater speed and maneuverability to your advantage. Even in your videos I see some of the other players making this fatal error. Never try to go toe to toe with anything in a Light Fighter... You'll lose almost every time.
    I've actually taken out Arrows and Glads in a Connie easily due to players doing this as all I do is reverse thrust into a backwards sliding turn which draws them in and as soon as they try to duke it out against 4 size 4s they go down very quickly. I've adopted this very "unique" strategy not because it's a good maneuver... It isn't as any competent pilot is going to go "WTF" and take you out quick but against these idiots it works almost every time when you are in a slow mover like the Connie.

    Appreciate the level of detail and conceptualization you do here. When i learn I like to have this much information so my brian to link what it feels it needs and can discard what it doesnt.. However, at the level of detail about a topic dealing with movements in 3-D space alng x,y,x axis, you need game play examples or some 3d animation when introducitng strategy. Talkiing about it, then scribbling drawings in real time, not quite nailing the art, then as,king us to imagine something we came here to learn is not quite reaching a masterclass level. You'll confuse more than teach. When you brought in examples at the back end you were guessing is a clip was good, but i bet most never reatained the first half.
    I offer this as constructive because I know you understand this at a deep level, but teaching it requires more. Think about your audience, preplan your material ans assets.
