- The sounds of wild jaguars growling and roaring at night in the wilderness of the Pantanal.
I've wanted to see and record jaguars in the wild for ages. Ever since my first expedition to South America in 2019 I've been researching and looking for these elusive big cats. Over the years I traveled to Peru, Costa Rica, Mexico, Colombia and Brazil without much luck. There was plenty to see and record on these expeditions and I never felt like I was wasting time though.
Fast forward to April 2024 when I traveled to Brazil again, this time in the Pantanal. This is the largest wetland in the world and an excellent environment for jaguars. The mix of lakes, rivers, marshes, savanna and forest is ideal for big cats and hosts large numbers of prey - deer, capybara, caimans, and of course livestock.
On this recent trip I saw plenty of jaguar tracks, and a few days into the expedition we bumped into Luciana, the local female jaguar. It looked like she was hanging out next to the river a lot, so I set up some rigs in various areas close by. She didn't seem bothered by the camera trap and even less so by my small drop rigs. From the footage and discussions with local guides it seems like she was in mating mode and had some interactions with males whose territories overlap with hers.
One of my rigs captured lovely territorial calls probably made by a male (which I will upload at a later date). I would have been extremely happy with this limited result since it's so difficult to capture jaguar calls in the wild. But it gets better. On the same night, a different drop rig captured 2 hours of roars, growls and other interactions between two individuals very close by. When I saw the spectrogram I knew what it was even before listening! Lots of low frequency energy that could have only come from a large animal like the jaguar. I was extremely pleased with myself for capturing these beautiful and rare calls, and I hope you will enjoy listening to them as much as I enjoyed recording them.
Recorded with Sony PCM A10 and Lom mikroUsi at Fazenda Barranco Alto in the Brazilian Pantanal. Enjoying the videos I upload on here? Feel free to support me by:

Wow! Fantastic capture George. I've always wanted to see a jaguar in the wild but hearing one is the next best thing. Cheers!
Many thanks!
WOW George!
This is unbelievable
Amazing
Thank you
My pleasure!
So amazing! I love Jaguars!
They're my top three favourite cats along with Snow leopards and Cheetahs.
They're fascinating!
I listened to this audio when I was in Manú, Peru and I had the same exact jungle chorus around me (minus the Jaguar sounds)… it was almost impossible to tell if my headphones were on or off. Now when I listen, I can imagine I am back there. :) thank you for providing me a little portal.
Great, enjoy!
That is the sounds of mating Leopard, I assume the same for Jaguars, great catch Vlad !!!!
@christosnyman5075 How do you know they are mating?
You can hear two individuals, and since they're solitary they only hang out together in mating season.
@GeorgeVlad sounds like a lot of couples/marriages these days 🤣🤣
Fantastic :)
Many thanks!
Both strong and soft
The full dynamic range.
How Powerful! 🎧 beautiful animal - awesome sounds!
Indeed!
Wow absolutely amazing thank you 🙏✨
Thanks for listening
These are some beautiful Jaguar sounds, congratulation
Thank you!
@@GeorgeVlad no problem
wow, these are fantastic!
Thank you! Cheers!
Was that during confinement of the animal ! Instead of in the open field ? It sounds like it’s in a reverberant space .
As you can read in the description, these are wild animals so no confinement involved. The reverb comes from trees and topographical features.
What were they doing when making these sounds? Is this how they sound when resting
Probably mating.
34:50 what is that? Sounds like a human voice that says "pregnant"? 😂
I think you've listened to this a bit too much and started hearing patterns 😂
@@GeorgeVlad well I don't know what in the hell this sound is but it is really different from the rest of the recording...😆
@samakanikalumata5390 I agree, but I promise it is all genuine.
@@GeorgeVlad well a human saying "pregnant" would be genuine too right? Maybe a little weird but hey 🤣
