For those who don't get this film, I think the most important lines of dialogue are when Amy tells Jake that a white lie is "a small lie that you tell to get yourself out of a bad situation", and when Charlotte says "she [Amy] might not be the right friend." Amy is only 15, and she has no parental guidance; her father is dead and her mum "sleeps a lot" (probably depressed). She is running away to France to have an adventure. She thinks Jake is weird and funny, someone who amuses her, and impulsively she invites him to take the ferry to France with her. I don't think she really understands what Aspergers Syndrome is, and because of the way Jake behaves she probably doesn't consider the fact that he is 20 years older than her. When Jake starts to have a meltdown, Amy feels confused and scared, and when the Ferry Attendants come to intervene, she doesn't want to get in trouble so she tells (what she thinks is) a "white lie" to get out of the situation. She tells the Ferry Attendants that Jake is just some guy she met on the beach who wanted her to go on the ferry with him. She twisted around what was really going on to make herself the innocent one. The police are notified because Amy is a minor and she had made it sound like Jake was maybe kidnapping her. In her immaturity her instinct is to just get out of it, she hasn't really thought about the consequences of her actions. Perhaps she doesn’t really care what happens to Jake. She doesn’t see him as a friend, but as passing entertainment. Charlotte on the other hand, who is also autistic, knows and understands Jake better, and obviously cares for him. A person with Asperger's Syndrome doesn't always understand social relationships and might think that someone being friendly to them makes them a friend. Charlotte has probably been taught by her family and health professionals to be wary of people, to not become friends with people she's just met, because people can take advantage of her. "You can't just decide to be friends with somebody, it's not that simple." Imagine being that vulnerable. To not understand that you can't trust a "new friend" to have your best interests at heart. When it came down to it, Amy was not the "right friend" for Jake. She nearly got him in the worst possible trouble. Thankfully Jake is let off with a warning from the police, and Charlotte is waiting for him, still his good friend.

Amber ..... one might add one thing to your thoughtful summery. Possibly Charlotte acts also on what once was referred to as female instinct. Women often do sense/ intuit things that a man won't.
In some way I feel you are being kind and generous to Amy.
People 15 today are quite astute due to a myriad of media exposures. She by her facial expression seems to know full well she has lied and has no care for what happens to Jake. A tragic reality in the present day of excessive selfish egocentric behaviour.
I do not suffer from Aspergers Syndrome or any ASD however I also cannot lie. Not by compulsion, it is something that simply goes against a deep part of my nature. Also not from any religious ethic as I eschew all religion or belief systems in deity. It has indeed caused me difficulties as I tend to believe other people until proved wrong which has been often. I simply hate mistrusting people. It makes life much more of an obstacle course which it is in any case.

Amber i don’t really think it’s an age thing, by 15 most people understand what rape or kidnapping is, since we are taught at a young age to notice the signs against it

My brother has Asperger Syndrome. I know every move Andrew made and why. I have seen it before in my little brother. I don't have the words to express how I love my brother, and how deeply it touches me when an actor tries to interpret that kind of personality. And I just can't express how I'm feeling with this. I feel like crying, but not with my eyes. I really want to tell you all who are watching this, that it's indeed a marvellous film, and the actors gave all their hearts while making this.

I've been sitting with a dropped jaw, wide open mouth and eyes through the entire 12 minutes and 15 seconds. It was painful and tragical, but still so captivating and I just couldn't look away... Andrew Scott makes people like Johnny Depp seem so... bleach. Every character he plays is just spot on. He's going to get BIG, I tell you. Let's just hope that when he does, he won't change. He won't become something CHEAP, like, Jim Carrey... ugh. Words can't even begin to...

This impacted me more than most films these days. I clicked on it just because Andrew Scott, but everything about it hit very close to home. I know a lot of people get annoyed with how most autistic people are pictured on the low-functioning end these days, especially with films like "Rain Man", but the little behaviors ... I don't know if I'm autistic or not (I do have adhd and have some anxiety and depression), but so many things about Jake and Charlotte here hit me hard, especially when everything just ... feels too loud for Jake. This hits close to home for me, at least. And the acting is just ... just wow. For everyone involved.

When you are the parent of a child carrying the diagnosis of autism spectrum disorder (classic versus Asperger's)... and had you never heard of @andrew_sxottt ... you would have no reason to believe this wasn't a documentary versus a short film. The meltdown was realistic because it was what they are... randomly routine, rarely if ever described, and intense... always a lesson in perspective and priority, from one moment to the next. Bravo. P.S.) "Ripley" is a compilation of teaching moments, to say the least~~

This is so weird for me to watch, because I have Asperger's. And I recognize what Andrew's doing, I can't so much as visually identify it because I can't watch myself in everyday life, but I can feel it. I can feel it and I wonder if that's what I look like. And I don't mean that in a bad way, I like the way I am, mostly anyhow. But it's weird to watch someone I can see myself in, it's like I'm watching me move and talk...but I'm not. It's a beautiful film though.

He has his own thought pattern, a whole way of thinking and believing that is just his. He looks at 'normal people' like they are aliens, and its amazing how this movie has portrayed all of that so well.

What a great insight into someone with Asperger's. My son has autism and I have seen and spent time with many who have this on many points of the spectrum. I can totally relate to Jake (Andrew Scott) in the film from what I've learned through the many aspects on the spectrum. Andrew, you did a phenomenal job with this role. The reactions to surrounding sounds, and the unfortunate intervention with police in this short film, is the way many can misinterpret what is happening. Jake's look of anger following the interaction with the officer is all too understandable about how uneducated some can be, with the exceptional factors of the spectrum. It's something that persons on the Autism spectrum and parents of those, can relate to. Happily, this is changing as many in our community are becoming aware of the signs and behaviours associated, including police and social caregivers.

The writing is superb too the dialogue accurate and well thought out :).

aspergers isnt an "illness" in a scientific sense as much as it is a brain difference in neurological/cognitive functioning . clearly he likes flying kites as well as quiet (as we all enjoy centering activities -and yes the character likely finds the routine comforting
many aspies and autistics find certain noises/situations over stimulating (like at the ferry dock)

First of all....this is so beautiful and I love Andrew Scott, he's an amazing actor and as someone who is involved in theater as well I look up to him and he has my upmost respect
Second of all....I have personally struggled with similar things portrayed in this short film such as extreme sensitivity to sound and his portrayal of that I felt was so accurate.....it took me back to times I've experienced similar things in school in settings such as the lunch room and gym.... I would spasm and sometimes cry...my way of coping as seen in the video would be to close my eyes as tight as I could to wish myself somewhere else ....other people would often freak out and even some teachers didn't understand, I've been caught up in situations like this character has where I have felt defenseless
Third of all.....I truly admire their friendship for it is so pure.....he sorta kinda left her for this "new friend" who didn't know him like she did and in the end turned out to be pretty crappy....but then she took him back anyways with no grudges or judgement and they went back to how they were before
In the end this was beautifully done and is definitely something I think everyone should watch to try to eliminate this stigma on mental health and disabilities

and that's why they've got 'kite wranglers' in the credits - no mere mortal could possibly hope to wield such a weapon of mass destruction as a kite!

Excellent liquor of acting from Andrew Scott, as always, though I haven't seen him been given his best role, at least not yet, even though his small part in Shakespeare almost had him at his best...but not quite.

Wow, this is really moving. My cousin has Asperger's, and I rated low on the empathy quotient myself, so I can relate to this.
