    I pass those art deco buildings most days for work and it's criminal that it's been allowed to rot as is.

    I love the in depth research you put into your channel. I worked for NCL in Salkeld street and got my class one licence through their school. Although I delivered around the area I'm learning something new with every video of yours I watch. In fact I'm starting to think I've been sleep walking my life away in Glasgow. Great stuff.

    Park Ward bought out Mulliner in 1959 to form Mulliner Park Ward. The body outfitters of Rolls Royce. Austin had a car the 1937 Austin 7 Mulliner, it had red leather seats and lace blinds in the rear!

    Wow! My father worked a NCL carriers just opposite the Sher building. I remember him talking about that fire.
    Also the picture of the Park car factory next door has a Ford Cortina Mk1 outside it. This could could be my dad's car! "GYS 471D" was the reg but I can't make it out in the video.
    I also had my Escort MK2 repaired at Arnold Clarke's body shop in the mid 1980's.

      Hi Hugh, I forgot to do this earlier but I zoomed in to see if the number plate matched your Dads Mk1. Unfortunately the quality of the still is too poor to make out. I think for the sake of a good story we should just agree that it is.

      I remember when Glasgow was jumping, manufacturing all shorts of stuff and skilled men were in demand. The last time I was there it's just shopping centres and council jobs.

      I thought I was the only person. I also remember my Fathers number plates. He bought the 1st Mk1 Escort in the North East of Scotland JAV 479F in the very early 70's then he had a Fiat 124 I think SSA 37K. I don't remember my plates but have had over 20 cars in my lifetime but had an Escort 1.8Si but nearly bought the RS2000 but as I was doing 20000 miles a year I worried about the price of the fuel even in those days. I did get the chance to drive an Escort Cosworth in Argyll in 2002 still to this day I wish I had bought it when I was offered it.

    Did you know that in the parcels depot in Salkeld Street they were working on a new siding and were digging test holes. One day as they worked away the point disappeared , on further investigation it was found that the point had punctured the crown of an arch below. What was discovered was stables from years back, not known about and a tunnel which ran under the river Clyde to the central station. I wonder if the victorian street with the shop fronts still exists under the station, I was shown it when I was a lad 60 years ago.....maybe an investigation required

    Great stuff, especially mentioning the warehouse fire in Kilbirnie St. What a tragedy.
    Could you do something similar for Port Dundas? The Forth & Clyde canal branch through to Spiers Wharf. White Horse whisky bottling plant. Pinkston power station, please.

      Cheers Peter, I have plans for the Forth and Clyde canal, there are plenty of Astonishing stories to be told (including the terrapins that live there flic.kr/p/KBcmmj ). I did touch briefly on Spiers wharf and Pinkston in my Monkland canal video but there will be more.

    That was an enjoyable wee vlog , fair bit of history in a small area , the Art Deco building on Salkeld St , interesting it was formally Leyland Motors , I suppose then their products were commercial vehicles , that same building was a filming location in the 1990 BBC drama ‘ Your Cheatin Heart “ , as a Country & Western music venue .

    • @AstonishingGlasgow
      @AstonishingGlasgow  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      I'm pretty sure it was Leyland commercial vehicles. For a short time after it was Leyland it was part of the nationalised British road service so it must have been built to handle trucks. Was it covered in neon for the BBC show?

    • @nnnormski2208
      @nnnormski2208 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@AstonishingGlasgow I can’t quite remember about the neon , …possible …..I’m sure it would have looked in better condition though.

    • @highpath4776

      @@AstonishingGlasgow BRS was a Goods Operator (small parcels - National Carriers did bigger stuff), they generally used trucks from the (private) British Motor Corporation - the Noddy Trucks , and independent Karrier of Maidstone Walk-Throughs. I Cannot remember if Leyland owned Albion Motors (Chassis Builders) , or if that came into the group when Leyland and BMC merged to form BLMC. Leyland had built cars at one time , but ceased to specialise in Trucks and Buses, most were made in Leyland, Lancashire, so I assume the building was for sales , service and support to its scottish customers (the local corporations and the Walter Alexander Group (Alexander built their own bodies on Leyland chassis).
