I think it's a commentary on the the gender roles we put on our children, plus it's a play on the term "prodigal son" - that we expect & read in all the stories about sons being the ones to wander far from home, having adventures, & returning the to family in triumph or in shame. In this story, the prodigal is an adventurous daughter, who has evolved & changed. Coming from a family that had raised only boys in the previous generation, & weren't sure what to make of granddaughters, I can relate.
