    I was told by a guy that worked at a marine repair shop that had taken on restoring a bunch of Katrina boats "Don't ever buy a sinker " . Everything electric is bad , even the shit that "works" will fail soon , all the connections will corrode and there will be mold where you can not get to. Every switch for every light and winch and windlass is going to go bad as is every light fixture and instrument . Maybe not today but soon , even sealed stuff the connections will go bad having you chasing bad grounds and connection gremlins for years .
    As to the engines , there will be shit in them including the transmission and they really need a full tear down . The same shit that was all around them on the floor , you might be able to save them without the tear down but they will be suspect and they are damaged unless they were cleaned out within hours of the sinking . Odd things will happen like micro pitting on the valve springs will have some fail a few years later dropping a valve for what seems to be no apparent reason .
    These new boats are disposable I am sad to say . Things like fuel tanks and bulkheads were never meant to be gotten to and fixed . There is that sandy shit water where you can not get and for some stuff you will need a sawsall to get it out . The beds and cushions all will smell like you would expect from them being in the water and then left for weeks closed up in the heat .
    However , as long as you know that , and got it at a really good price so that with all new shit you are about to have to buy and what your time is worth is still less than just buying a good used boat then it is worth it . Helps too , if you enjoy this kind of work .

    • @bwdz75
      @bwdz75 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      I sort of agree on the engines. I had to rebuild some after a boat sank in fresh water (gas engines) took them apart and flushed them all out with Kerosene and used assembly lube on all rotating parts and she ran good after that for many years. If he doesn't take them apart, who knows????

  • @MartyDidier
    @MartyDidier 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    Interesting journey to fix this 2021 Cat. With rebuilding there’s value in resolving everything so you’ll have peace of mind later. Hence, depending on what you can deal with, comfort comes from being able to fix those issues that surface later.
    Engines are a different matter especially when they have been submerged in water. But isn’t only the surface areas effected by the Salt?
    Looking closely at Valve Springs the engine design for best cost requires the shortest valve. Valve length is based on shortest efficient spring as everything in the head assembly is affected. Valve Springs manufacturing still has a high percentage of Art compared to Science to Control Product Quality. Any high stress areas in the Spring can increase work hardening that reflects in breaking the spring. Metal can become so hard at the break point it’ll cut glass. This is mostly why the Spring fails.
    Hence, I wouldn’t be afraid of salvaging a sunken motor especially if it hasn’t been submerged for a long time. Certainly the saltwater would Attack surface areas. Hardened steal takes longer then softer metal to degrade from salt. How long does it take for common wear to clean up saltwater markings? Displacing water by using a high solvent light oil liquid like WD20 certainly helps. Of course nothing is 100% effective, but using this edges us closer to a functioning system. I would want to change any sealing component that could harbor saltwater in its assembly. Seals often have metal rings with a synthetic sealing material, so somewhere in that assembly might pose problems later from saltwater intrusion.
    Realize the same quality question exists with Sail Drives. Their weakness centers around failure of the Lip seal at the end of the shaft assembly. Sail Drive design is heavily mechanical with precision components all fitted together. Pinion Gear Tooth design are really little cams sliding with each other to produce motion. Just as important if not more then the motors innards. Anyway, disassembly, thorough cleaning, reassembly with new seals and gaskets can make it like new again.
    👉Since I’m talking about problems, what’s looming that many don’t think about is Hackers hacking our electronics! You don’t have any idea how huge this is! I’ve been working with FBI since 98 on a RICO that continues today. One central problem is hoe effective Hacking is to everyday life. Somethings will have to remain computer-less!
    So what does this say about WiFi and other RF communications? Potentially it says everything! Targeting someone is simple if you know what to target and electronic systems are a big playground since they help manage our lives. Simple example are Vehicle ECU’s are Hacked all the time to setup serious accidents! Look at what happened to Reporter Michael Hastings!
    How do you think the huge Evergreen Cargo Container Ship got wedged in the Suez Canal? Can name many other examples.
    Because of the 98/99 RICO, I’m only available here or on Twitter DM at @marty_didier

    Just use a single sheet or sheet and a half of toilet paper for nose plugs, or tear up a tissue. Otherwise the masks that they use to help prevent the spread of COVID do a great job, just cost more. You can put a drop of mint oil or vanilla extract on the mask to help with smelly projects. Those nose clamps that swimmers use would also work but might get sore using day after day.

    All things considered, it's not all that bad, to be honest. Yes, it's going to take alot of work to restore her to her original pristine condition, but it will be well worth it. And it's obvious you all work well together and have a great attitude.
    1. I am actually glad the AGM lead batteries are being removed, now you can get some REAL batteries, and I mean LifPo4 Lithiums!!!
    2. I like the attitude when things break, "It's OK Panda Bear, Sh1t happens, let's keep going". But it's a thousand-dollar camera I just broke. Nah, it's going for $799 now, lol. Just a great attitude to have, especially with a refit as there will be alot more SH1T going to happen before it's all said and done.
    3. The refrigerators seem to be in great condition and could be reused IMHO. But, obviously, with all that spoiled food, it's very possible you can't get all that out, meaning the smell from the inside and the sand and salt from the outside.
    4. Do you all have a checklist or spreadsheet of how to go through a boat like this. I would be very interested in seeing that, for the cleanup and for the restoration project. In other words, what are the priorities and where do you start. The issue for me is where to best put your time and energy as well as finances. asking myself, what's important NOW and what's important later.
    Obviously getting the boat cleaned out is first. Then the goal is to get back in the water, so fix the hulls, meaning HOLES, and get the engines working again. Once in the water, you are saving money from being paid out for dry-docking fees. Then again, you would be paying wet docking fees, so hmmm, maybe just leaver her on the dry dock until ready to go, lol.
    Just realized you all are 4 months into this project, LOL. Guess I need to follow your Instagram or Facebook page for the latest, lol.
    God Bless you all and looking forward to the next installment!

    I hope the wife can keep the crying under control this time around she seem like she has toughen up a bit in a good way because this is going to be a daunting task that is for sure. Plus I don't like seeing people crying it makes my heart sad.

    Love the channel and would love to try something similar. Can you please give me the contact for the salvage company guy who connected you on the sunken cat? I would love to get one myself. Thanks!

    Do not believe the rockers & springs need replacing... Clean them with a rust remover chemical ( or coca cola if you cant find anything ) and let them lie them in diesel until you fit them again.

    Easier way and police and csi investigator use this around crime scenes, is to put a dolop of Vicks Vapour rub in each nostril, if this product is available in the US.
