    hi Joel, I have a gap under the gates in both my back and front gardens. My back garden backs into a large green area and behind that woodland. I have a hedgehog house in both gardens too. Nothing better than seeing hedgehog poo in the garden and knowing they have visited!

      They are indeed wonderful, let's hope more and more habitats are made for them - particularly gardens where they will find the invertebrates they need, worms etc - they will only eat slugs as a last result and we know what the knock on effect of slug pellets are :/ Hope you are doing well George - best wishes, Joel

      @@WildYourGardenWithJoelAshton All good thank you Joel.
      Yes poor Hoggies suffer badly from the parasite lung worm found in slugs and , worse still, as you say eating slugs that have eaten slug pellets.
      I totally get it now having a wildlife garden creates plenty of food for all wildlife. I’m not even close to doing what is needed but hopefully will get there with the encouragement from the likes of you Joel 👌🏻

      @@george-1961 I think you just made my day George :) You are doing the right thing, once the habitat is there for all creatures then the balance comes and best bit is you will see it unfold before your eyes - it doesn't take a lot of effort, probably less effort than keeping a "traditional" garden I'd say, and the results with the visitors are pretty quick :) Best wishes, as always - Joel

      I can’t wait to see it all happen.
      The grandkids will hopefully love it to when they come over for visits with the family 🤞🏻

      Haha! Deal :) I understand the African Pygmy hedgehogs are quite the craze in USA, but a lot abandoned and I did read that it's illegal to have them in California in case they are abandoned and affect the local nature balance. Hope you're doing fine :) Best wishes, Joel

    It is a great shame that these wonderful and very beneficial animals appear to be falling in numbers, one thing we can all do to safeguard them is to check our bonfire pile before setting it alight , to a Hedgehog a pile of wood is an idea hiding place, and all too often they are caught in a bonfire burn, so please check before lighting, I always light a fire well away from the pile, and load wood on from the burn heap, that way you have a much more controlled burn. Stay safe! Chris B.

    I have a dilemma, my sister has a small pond that breeds newts every year, I’ve been inspired to build my own pond and transfer some newt fry, to spread this population.
    But I learn newts are on the hedgehog menu....😟

    • @WildYourGardenWithJoelAshton
      @WildYourGardenWithJoelAshton  3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Hello there - sorry for the delay! Frogs lay in huge numbers, due to predation from many things, including newts! But hedgehogs will rarely take newts and frogs, it's not a major part of their diet, they prefer worms, insects etc - they shouldn't make a huge dent in a newt population as far as I am aware but they will sometimes feast on frogspawn I understand. I hope that's helpful, best wishes - Joel

    Hi, what signs to look for to find out if there are Hedgehogs around? Cheers

    • @WildYourGardenWithJoelAshton
      @WildYourGardenWithJoelAshton  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hedgehog droppings would be the give away - unless you physically see hedgehogs at dusk of course, they should be leaving hibernation soon :) But the droppings are recognisable by the exoskeletons of invertebrates, such as beetles contained in them :) Best wishes, Joel

      @@WildYourGardenWithJoelAshton thanks for the reply, any chance of doing a vid on such subjects ? Also is it ok to feed tadpoles , if yes then what's suitable? My search suggests bread pieces and boiled lettuce, is that ok? Other question I've is: i use to live near the town centre and use to see PLENTY of Badgers after midnight but since moving to the outskirt of town near woodland all around me 7 years ago I haven't seen a single Badger , why is that ? I would've thought being near woodland there would be plenty chance to see badgers???? Cheers

    • @WildYourGardenWithJoelAshton
      @WildYourGardenWithJoelAshton  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@rezaamini2388 Thanks Reza - yes, boiled lettuce is good, they will naturally eat algae when young :) Am not sure re the badgers, I agree that woodland should contain a few but I do know that because of human "encroachment" more badgers are seen in urban settings, same as foxes due to there being a more plentiful supply of food, via humans etc, but that's a guess rather than fact :) Best wishes, Joel
