Beyond Black by Hilary Mantel is a darkly comic and sinister novel set in suburban London. It revolves around Alison Hart, a professional medium who is awkward, obese, and has a traumatic past. Alison's journey includes confronting malevolent spirits and uncovering painful truths about her childhood abuse. The novel explores themes of trauma, memory, and the mundane aspects of the supernatural, combined with Mantel’s signature dark humour.
