      Love Columbo and frequently re-watch the episodes. Such a great actor. Regarding his marriages it has been said that Falk was a frequent womanizer, even with Shera. Still, they managed to stay together. Nobody's perfect. Eventually Falk's memory faded and he was diagnosed with Alzheimer's disease, forgetting his famous roles. Thanks, Jeff, for posting these! I've been a long time fan of this show and Peter Falk- ever since i was a kid. I also was big time into those other 70s shows like Cannon and Barnaby Jones. One thing I'm noticing more and more as an adult is that Columbo was extremely well-written, well-paced and plotted. On the hour-long Quinn Martin shows, you could pretty much plot exactly where everything was going from the very first scene. In Columbo, that show could honestly keep you guessing from second to second and still being surprised at the outcome. Peter Falk- no way anybody else could EVER play Columbo. Not then, not now, not ever.

    Johnny was right that Peter Falk deserves most of the credit for making Columbo the wonderful and enduring show that it is. But the show would not be as good as it was without the creators (Richard Levison and Bill Link), the writers (including Steve Bochco, Jackson Gillis, Peter Fischer, among others), the supporting actors (including Jack Cassidy, Robert Culp, Patrick McGoohan, and John Casavetes, among others), and the direction. Peter Falk would be the first to say so, and has said so many times.

    I loved the show so much I had to drop $100 on the whole dvd set, all the seasons and movies plus it came with a spinoff show called Mrs. Columbo. The opening credits of Mrs. Columbo showed her emptying Columbos ash tray full of cigars, moving his rain coat and it shows her doing something like feeding Columbo's dog. In the show Mrs. Columbo is a journalist that is basically a sleuth just like Columbo and of course you never see Columbo just signs of his passing. I think it was filmed in England.

      @@jeffzest8393 I think they quickly abandoned the idea that Kate Mulgrew's character was THE Mrs. Columbo. In the first season, she was supposed to be the one, she also drove the blue convertible a few times. Then they gradually eliminated the references to the original show and she also got a new last name, Callahan. I suspect most watchers simply didn't buy it. She was too young (unless she's not the first one, who already existed in 1968) and does not meet any criteria from the original show. Columbo tells suspects a lot of things that may not be entirely true, but in that cruise ship episode he is looking for Mrs. Columbo before there even is a murder, and based on his description (5 ft, rotund, long black hair that she wears in a bun) other passengers claim to have seen her.

      People and their families have been able to sue tobacco companies for a long time, but no one is allowed to sue alcohol companies for deaths related to alcohol... whether from a throat, liver, prostate, or stomach cancer, or liver diseases such as cirrhosis, or a drunk who kills a family drunk driving, or someone dying from an accident (other than driving) because they were drunk, etc.. or someone being drunk and killing someone in a rage/fight...
      And alcohol commercials are shown a lot during sports events like the superbowl (which kids watch) I remember the ones where a guy was standing alone and no girls interested, until he had alcohol in his hand... stuff like that... (talk about sending a message to kids)
      People can drink alcohol at public events, and in restaurants... but no smoking cuz it's dangerous and gross...
      I never used to see taxis at bars/clubs as drunk people poured out at closing time... even today no ubers or lyfts... very rare to see those.
      If alcohol had been as aggressively taxed as tobacco... today one 6 pack of 12oz cans of beer would cost around $60/$70 but you can still get one for like $6.99?
      Amazing... and curious how society vilified one but not the other... which has always been far more dangerous, more addictive, and killed far more people.

    Funny stuff ! Thanks for uploading ! Gee ! Smoking on camera ! My, how things have changed ! "Columbo" was a pretty good gig for Falk. It was only one of the shows on the weekly "NBC Mystery Movie". It rotated with other shows like "McMillan & Wife" and "McCloud". So it aired only once a month or so. Mr Falk didn't want the grind of a weekly series. Tantalizing trivia: the producers originally offered the role to Bing Crosby. But he turned it down, saying it would interfere too much with his golf game. Bing was wonderful entertainer but I just don't see him as Lt. Columbo. But Bing's refusal was the best thing that ever happened to Peter Falk, that's for sure !! :-)

    For those interested in Peter Falk's Emmy acceptance speech that Johnny referred to at the beginning of Peter's guest appearance, here's the clip: th-cam.com/video/Q8TUSsqWCTM/w-d-xo.html. And to answer Johnny's question, yes, Peter did think through and write the speech before his delivery. His acceptance comments may have seemed spontaneous, but remember that Peter's first and foremost an outstanding actor, skilled at delivery. Also, if you know Peter's approach to things, he always likes to be as prepared as he can beforehand. Peter wrote his Oscar acceptance speech, for example, although he did not win. (Peter's Oscar nomination was for Murder Incorporated, but Peter Ustinov won the award for his performance in Spartacus. Peter actually got out of his seat as he heard the winner announced, "Peter . . ."--but quickly sat down when "Ustinov" was read.)

    • @jamesfeldman4234
      @jamesfeldman4234 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@jeffzest8393 That's true too. A classic example of this was in the episode "The Most Crucial Game," where family attorney, Walter Cannell (played by Dean Jagger) asks Columbo why he was investigating the victim's home. Columbo abruptly changes the subject and looks down at Dean Jagger's shoes, saying, "Sir...you don't mind if I ask you a personal question, do you?"
      "No," Jagger responds, a little perplexed.
      "What did you pay for those shoes?"
      asks Columbo out of the blue.
      The lines between Peter Falk and Dean Jagger were not in the original script, according to certain Columbologists, and the story behind these lines may have originated with Falk himself. In any case, the lines do seem off the cuff and Jagger did a great job in responding to Falk's questions and comments. This was another reason why Peter Falk was so brilliant in this role.
