Adam brings out one of the oldest pieces in his collection: his very first mechanical hand sculpture. Made from sheet copper more than 20 years ago, it was Adam's first attempt at an animatronics mechanism! This piece was also instrumental in Adam getting his very first job with Jamie!

Ditto the above. You vids are always wonderful. Now, that being said... I have a question for you Adam:
Has the definition of "Animatronics" merged with things that were formerly known as "cable operated puppets"? I have heard many people use the term Animatronics (and you as well) when there are no actual electronics involved. I think the WDI folks coined the term back for the original Electronically Animated figures developed and built for Disneyland in the 1960's... yes? These were programed to do repeat performances, actuated through electronically actuated motors.
Now, not meaning to be a d*ck, but if that is so, and the definition has not been blended or changed, what you have there is a "cable operated" hand device and not an "Animatronic" creation. Also, I am pretty sure actual "Animatronic" things are also "programed" and electronically operated through a playback signal (back in the day, by Gilderfluke or R.A Gray Co. set- ups, for example).
To site some examples from the works of Rick Baker... gorilla arm extensions are "cable operated" by the ape performer's hands (in same the fashion as your copper hand), a cable operated mask (like Rick's older Gorillas... or Stuart Freeborn's Chewbacca mask for that matter) snarl by cable operated jaw actuations performed by the wearer. You know this 'cause you have a Chewie yourself. For the record, these creations aren't technically "Animatronics" either.
However, Rick's more sophisticated creations, like the Tony Randall voiced "Brain" Gremlin character from *Gremlins 2*, were programed to follow puppeteering (and in the case of Brain, lipsyncing) to match a pre-recorded audio track. _That_ is Animatronics. It might even be considered "Audio Animatronics" as there was a pre-recorded audio track involved in the programming. Do you agree?

@@cavemanvi : Yeah, several others of us wondered what happened to the Raptor project too, if that's what you meant. Perhaps he had to put a hold on the build for some reason, but it appears that all of the posts involved in its construction have evaporated.

I would love to see a sibling project to this one where you limit yourself to the same materials as the original, but make a left hand to go accompany this one. Just to see a side-by-side of what your decades of experience and practice can do on a repeat visit to an old project.
Two points.
First. Back 16-17 years ago there was a school project I was made to attend. The whole classroom made mechanical hands, similar to Adam's out of a cut paper plate, straws and rubber bands. At the time, it was neat and didn't grabbed my attention that much. But now that I am older those days were invaluable.
Second. I love going back to my old stuff, in my case mostly art. It all sucks. But i still go through sketchbooks and image folders with fond melancholy and am surprised that there are things I am super proud of still.

This was so cool! I don’t think anyone would object to seeing something like this being “tuned up” in a longer format. With Adam’s awesome commentary explaining the mechanics and problems he is facing, and his proficiency with all the tools around him, I’d watch for hours!!
I like that choice to not bring just a book, but actual things you made. Allowing someone to be “hands-on” with your creations makes a tremendous impact. Best example that most can relate to, would you buy a brand new car from a dealership who could only show you a photo of the car, but you couldn’t look at the actual car, let alone drive it?
I would LOVE to watch a documentary of Jamie and Adam talk about their lives together. Talking about personal and combined stories, but just really candidly.
This hand is one of the first things I remember from Mythbusters. You told this exact story on there, and as a kid I saw that and was like "I gotta make this". Being somewhere around 12-13 years old of course I don't have ease of access to vinyl tubing, so I made it from party straws and fishing twine. Even in the first season you guys were inspiring kids to make things. I am so glad I had the privilege to watch not only the show from the absolute beginning (you bet I watched the first episode of the show on Discovery), but also to be at just the right time where social media evolved along side us to allow you to share the journey after the Mythbusters journey without leaving us in the dark saying "I wonder what ever happened to Adam Savage".
I turn 30 this year. Time sure does fly.

This brings me so many memories. I did something very similar for a school project when I was like 13 and I had so much fun showing my extended cardboard arm to everyone
I would love to see a One-Day Build of how Adam would approach building a hand like this today with his current resources.
I really enjoyed the first bit of this video where we get to see Adam progress through the shop searching for the right tools for the job. It’s beautiful to see this micro design evolution as he tries out different tools until the desired effect is achieved.
My roommates have called me a hoarder on occasion but as I get older I start having memories and reminders of past projects I havent thought about in 10+ years and finding myself wishing I had kept them. Quarantine especially has accelerated looking back on old things and wondering what become of them or savoring the new inspiration from looking at them with different eyes
When younger me first heard about your mechanical hand it helped me trying and making new similar projects. I starter with cardboard mechanical hands and evolved to aluminium from cans and custom wood parts at the time.
Nowadays I'm happily developing and testing 3d printed hand prosthesis at my university, and I can say it happened thanks to this project.
Adam's ability to articulate his relationship to material objects has offered me such a great vocabulary for describing - to other people - that relationship to items in my own life.

Hey Adam, I know you typically film on iPhones in your cave and struggle with focusing the camera sometimes. When you're struggling with focus you can press and hold for about a second or two wherever you want to maintain focus and the iPhone camera app will lock the focus so it won't continue to auto focus. You can also adjust the brightness by sliding your finger up and down near the box it creates. To go back to auto focus you can just tap anywhere in the cameras field of view. Hope this helps!

Always save the good stuff you are proud of. My parents still have the little construction paper drum kit I made in kindergarten with its functional kick drum pedal. That thing is 50 years old now.

It's funny this past year was my first time working with animatronics. We made a mechanical hand as well for a cosplay and even 3d printed the parts with it to be activated with servos. It was a great project and really sparked my interest in other animatronics. I def plan to do more and want to showcase what animatronics can do in the world of cosplay
You really do value older things as a connection to the past as time passes. For me, it's books. I still have the first Sci-Fi/Fantasy book I ever bought from the early 90s - Sword of Shannara by Terry Brooks. It's a pity the original cover illustration was discontinued in recent editions - it's a boring abstract landscape silhouette last I saw a copy. I can remember the bookstore, and even the shelf location, where I saw that striking group portrait around a glowing sword.
Even though Adam and Jaime bumped heads a lot I feel that Jaime respected the things Adam made.
Indeed, Jaime chose Adam to be on MythBusters with him, it was Jaime's creation from the start. I'm sure he had many people he could have brought in to work on the show, but he chose Adam, and it was the right choice. They were the odd couple true, but they were both good at what they did, respected each other, and their dynamic made the show what it became.
Autumn 1990 was the the beginning of sophomore year in high school for us. As for save what is important to one well I have a box labels memories for that very reason. It holds things I’ve made and other bits of my past & the box of memories has been moved with me over the years because I treasure it.

Thank you Adam for showing this to us and adding a life lesson to the end. Most people with creative minds absolutely HATE what they have made in the past. Im not entirely sure what is it exactly, but it has to do with person becoming better at their craft and they spot mistakes and judge them self. From this point on, i will cherish my inventions and keep them around. Because i have not thought about the fact that i will get old as well. I can't wait for the next video. Thank you for keeping on making things! It means a world that you have inspired me to make things from child to this point.

Wow, while I was at Cooper Union I participated in HackCooper 2015, my team took 3rd prize building the "Palmitron", a 3D printed prosthetic controlled by a Myo armband. Our hand design and animation was extremely similar to yours Adam; unfortunately I can't seem to find any of the photos or the one or two articles with details about the project, but thanks for reminding me of that awesome memory!
Adam's ball of twine or whatever it is was amusing as his stuff is always so orderly and it just looks like something you toss to the cat to keep it occupied lol.

Adam, you're not a hoarder.
Everything, or at least most everything, you own has value to you as individual objects. Hoarders don't value individual objects, they value just having a vast pile of stuff and it doesn't matter what that stuff is just so long as its there
You place your objects in proper display cases or at least they're properly stored away. Your cave is absolutely amazing; frankly it's a modern marvel. A hoarder's home is a complete wreck, littered with random piles of junk and garbage.
How do I know this? Because I live with a hoarder. She's my mother.
That's a great build Adam. I hope to do the same once I get a shop. For one of your next build, you should do Alita's Cyber-doll pearl hand. I think it would be right up your alley.

on the saving everything point i have found it to be a huge help when teaching or talking about crafts i have tough wood turning, pottery, blacksmithing and many other hand crafts and one of my big regrets was not keeping early attempts i have tend to put things aside that were first tries or good examples of mistakes that i have made as well as many of the very odd things i have made when i had some free time and a blowtorch as they are good reminders when you or someone ells gets frustrated or has a question

Here comes the next step of Adam's efficiency: A full-on mechatronical arm to increase his speed when working. In ten years, he'll have eight ones and produce two One-Day-Builds a day. I'm not mad.
My technology students association (TSA) team built one out of polycarbonate and started off using remote controlled servo motors to operate it until we found out it could not be remote controlled so they added me to the team and I brought computer program controlled motors to the table in the form of the k'nex brand, I was on the k'nex challenge team for my high school and incorporated the motors and a few k'nex rods to wind and unwind string that moved the fingers and used rubber bands where you used springs, we did this not knowing of your model in like early '07. We took 3rd place in the state of FL 😁

Thanks for sharing this. Love your work. It works so good. I built a mechanical hand in early 80's with Erector Set and Futaba RC equipment. Scared the crap out of the dog when I made in crawl across the floor. I don't have that hand anymore but I still have that Erector Set and RC equipment. Really. :) Oh, and I still have my X-wing I built from scratch from memory after seeing it in the movie the first time in the summer of '77. BTW, my memory was faulty but you can tell it's clearly an X- wing. Would love to show you pic.

In the 90s I visited an effects shop on the Gold Coast. They had a kangaroo head, for the new Skippy at the time I believe. A neat way they did the ear movement was a loop of wire, one end was fixed and when the other end was twisted the whole loop rotated around like an animal turning it's ear.

I was watching the episode of Mythbusters about the deadly sandblasted PVC and this hand showed up. It was a lot shinier back then!

You can see the hand in action in Season 3 of Mythbusters, episode 7 "Exploding Jawbreaker".
They use it to test static discharge off a PVC pipe that's been sandblasted while resting on insulating material.
One of my hospital years was a senior care center with a craft room with boxes of wheelchair spare parts.Mechanical Therapy I called it.

So I scrolled through his one day builds playlist, and saw three private videos. Then I searched it up on google and found the video. When I clicked on it, it sent me straight to their website to pay for premium.

Please tell me you know about Ian Davis and his prosthetic hand builds. Machinist/engineer/genius designing and building hands for himself after cancer took part of one. Amazing. Bonus is he has adapts power tools to them, like a screw gun and chainsaw!

This is a bit random but there is an anime called Dr.Stone. It would be cool if Adam could react to some of the cool science projects tackled in the show and give his point of view.

Dude... My first cosplay build was a mechanical hand for a steampunk character I wore to San Diego Comic Con. Since then I've scratch built a bunch of blasters and armor and all sorts of props and costumes. I still have it sitting around somewhere and now I want to break it out and clean it up.
Was that still the same wire as when it was used in i-dont-remember-which* Episode? (*Maybe it was Baghdad Battery? Not sure.)

i built one like that out of cardboard when i was about 9 or 10. my brother also said "you're a genius!" (i dropped out of high school and can't even math) i just like building stuff

That’s the body that the hand belongs to. He hasn’t installed the eyes for it yet so it just wanders aimlessly for the missing appendage. I think it’s name is Ragamuffin.
