    Very impressing and good pictures, thanks.. I was wondering if an SCT (9.25) would be better for general use, like nebulosity or dim objects ? I have two Newtonians goto 6 inch and 12 inch Dob. Want to do a lot of imaging...

    Yes I loved the knob fouling comment too - nice to see such a dry sense of humor - it doesn't go a miss, even with the most serious of subjects ...

    Nice. My first "proper" 'scope was and is a Maksutov (OMC140). I love it, from light polluted Bootle I mostly observe the Moon and planets. I've been thinking about the focuser mod for ages. The micrometer focuser if fine but I like to share views with family and friends. Refocusing for different eyes is tricky for first time observers with the micrometer. Focusing with Crayford types seems more intuitive/immediate. Cheers.

    Omg lol stop moving the telescope so much it’s so distracting from your review. Other wise a good review. I have the 150 version and upgrading to the newer 180 with sct back so I can fit a feather touch focuser on it.

    Very useful, thanks! Just one question: do you find that the fixed dovetail on a 180 makes it unfixably unsteady, or do you think rings just make life easier?

    Interesting to see a conical baffle for the secondary, just like on my Meade 7" Mak (36 per cent obstruction by diameter with the conical baffle fully taken into account, so I read on my Meade Mak) that I just removed the cast iron disc weight out of to bring it down to 7.5Kg total for the OTA. My Meade has a fan in the back, it's ex-LX50.

    Very helpful, thanks, liked and subbed. The motor you added to the SCT focuser, is that an RJ45 socket on it so that you can focus remotely ?

    That intro picture looking through the tube is eerie. Looks like the devil.

    i believe the mak and the sct are just the same when it comes to the focuser. i have a celestron sct and i don't have any trouble focusing it.

    Folks
    The Skywatcher 180 pro is an amazing telescope But there is a massive flaw in the
    dovetail attachment it is only attached to the scope with 2 tiny
    screws. Imagine this you have spent £1000 on a scope you have a
    rock-solid mount and you attach it to a piece of metal That is held onto
    the scope of your dreams with basically a few grub screws? that is the only bad design, not the scope the attachment

    The drawback of the Crayford or any add-on focus is of course a limitation in the focusing distance that scope can accommodate. So if you do any close-in (100ft or less) terrestrial viewing, you need to use the scope's mirror focusing system.

      Richard Anderson If you watch the video at roughly 8 minutes 15 seconds, the usage is explained of both focusers.

    those screws even the cheap ones that they use to attach the dovetail rail have over a 2000lb tensile strength, they are perfectly fine.

    The accessories that come with most main stream scopes are not great quality.
    What most of us are interested in is the optics!
    How did they star test.
    What was the instrument like visually.
    Mak’s should be great planet scopes when they get to 180mm.
    Also the scope should benefit greatly from
    flocking the tube.
    Protostar in the USA makes get flocking board that can be cut to fit the inside easily.
    Controlling glare light scatter is very important in and scope.
    If Skywatcher ever makes a 250mm -254mm
    Mak I will take the plunge.
    It would be nice to see a 250mm and a 300mm Mak.

    Three things - which mount are you using, the focuser you say if aftermarket? and the adapter the Web address is not valid?

    • @astronomyshed
      @astronomyshed  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      alaiowa contact modernastronomy.com for the adapters and info on available focusers. My mount was an NEQ6 from Skywatcher.

    Just ordered this OTA and they now come with a 2" threaded visual back, so that focuser will now screw straight onto the scope with no need for the adaptor anymore.

    • @astronomyshed
      @astronomyshed  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      That's good news, the added focuser makes a world of difference.

      Dion, can I ask you for the total length of the 180 with that Crayford on the back please? I am trying to sort a hard case for it prior to receiving the scope. Cheers, Andy.

    Whats the maximun size of the Maksutov telescopes on the market today? Is there a limit for the diameter of the menisco to not show aberratic cromatic or field aberration due the simple lens of the menisco or becomes Impracticable opticaly due the thicknessof the menisco?

  • @astronomyshed

  • @LiveSteamMad

    Crikey why didn't SkyWatcher simply fit a cheap fan on the back to make that 180 MCT thermally viable. A 2 hour cooldown just isn't practical in my mind (and certainly not for quick looks on a week night!). Thank goodness my beat up old Meade Mak has a fan. I just finishing cleaning & regreasing the OTA baffle tube outside and mirror baffle tube inside and applied Rocol MolyTone (MTS 1000) grease (the original red petroleum based Meade grease was like stiff clay and almost gone!)

    Hi, I have a Skywatcher MAK150 and would like to switch the visual back to an adapter for SCT. I could not unscrew because it's too hard to take the visual back. Can you guide me? Is there a clip or pin that holds the visual back?

    Great info! Can the diagonal be removed to replace it with a camera T adapter without purchasing additional parts?

    • @astronomyshed
      @astronomyshed  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      BirdNest Although it sounds stupid, it depends, skywatcher had a habit of changing the thread sizes on the maks.

    • @d3ci.b3L
      @d3ci.b3L 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      astronomyshed as long as the diagonal slides out of the visual back, and can be replaced by sliding in a 2" T adapter and held in place with a compression ring, that's all I need. I also have a 2" to 1.25" adapter that I would like to use at times.

    Mount is a skywatcher eq ???

  • @MrPedalpaddle
    @MrPedalpaddle 5 ปีที่แล้ว

    This video is now a bit dated. You will probably find that your current Mak, if 150mm plus, has standard SCT threads so that the adapter is not needed. This article from Agena Astro is helpful. I plan to order the GSO focuser for my Skywatcher Mak 150. agenaastro.com/upgrading-a-focuser-on-your-sct.html

      @@carollshelby500 Why 150 over 180? 180 will show much more detail and last for longer time in term of future upgrade of astronomical gear.
