    Guillem is my favorite (I absolutely love her pointe!) but this really shows how all of these dancers brought their individual perfections to this piece..no doubt! The first one really expressed a unique style. The third one was also beautiful ...a bit more "natural", I thought, but all were fantastic! It's actually difficult to choose! I had the awesome privilege to dance ballet for nearly 20 yrs. Fabulous experience. I wouldn't trade it for the world!

    I think comparing Guillem with other ballerinas is mostly a waste of time (sort of like with Baryshnikov, too). They were both way ahead of their time and their delivery, technique, acting and musicality are still unsurpassed, over thirty years later!

    Elegance characterize the french style. I love Alina, but here the elegance is Sylvie from the beging to the end, from feet to head, from left hand to right hand. Sylvie's leg lifts are always unique. Furthermore, the diagonal balonnes in Croisé with the turn en dehors is much more elegant too.

    Up to her retirement S.Guillem was the highest payed female ballerina and she is indeed a top performer. However, I wouldn’t dare to diminish or devalue a perfectly danced variation by a prima of Mariinsky, well known for her beautiful long legs, elegance , great technique, great level of confidence based on dancing without mistakes and long hours of practicing. S. Guillem is a legend but Alina Somova is blossoming as principal of Mariinsky and she is incredible and she is absolutely pro and gorgeous in Grand pas classique.

    Somova is great in this compilation and beats even Guillem because she is dancing a somewhat more difficult version of this variation very confidently with high energy and ease. Super powerful performance.
    It is not though right to compare dancers that were in different age during their performance.
    Guillem's f.e performance was filmed when she was hardly 20 years old, while Somova is somewhat older in her and more mature so even if she doesn't have Guillem's perfect lines she has advantage due to her maturity.
    Dronina now is not in the same level with the other two. She doesn't have the same level of technique and she doesn't even interpret in her own way this variation.

    I think Somova and Guillem are very young in these videos, and I think Sylvie's music was added over the video. I was unfamiliar with Dronina and felt this was filmed at an age when she had fully matured, but I'm just spitballing here. Do the people who are applauding Somova not see (maybe not familiar with the variation?) that she's the only person in the known universe to do the releves in efface rather than croise? I've seen dancers use the other leg and come down the opposite diagonal, but still in croise. I don't know if Somova made a mistake and fixed it as intelligently as she could, but it looks really awkward. And I don't know what the video editor was thinking, moving off her full body right as she did that little bit of exacting pointe work right after. I've seen Guillem own this piece, and maybe the lack of her usual fine musicality is due to her dancing on a marble floor plus I swear she's only 19 here----an etoile, to be sure, but she improved as she matured. Really interesting comparison video, thanks!

      Actually quite a few Russians, including Vishneva when I think she was a student has done that diagonal efface. I don't know why it happened and perhaps it was just from the specific coach who had done it that way.

    I will say this - the Russian-trained dancers dance with a palpable energy emanating from their torso. Their backs are so alive. Guillem’s dancing looks dead in comparison. The only signs of life are in the legs and feet, everything else is dead upstairs. This is not just a slam on Sylvie Guillem. This “deadness” in the centre (core), seems to be a feature of the French school of ballet dancing.

    • @galinayepanchina6443
      @galinayepanchina6443 2 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      This 'deadness', as you call it, is the fact that the French method focuses mainly on the legs and feet, likewise the Danish, or Bournville, method. In Russia, they focus more on the arms and back.

    Guillem was painfully unmusical. She kicked her leg high, and wasn't on the music for a second. Somova was slightly off of the music, it was scarcely noticeable. However, she was quite nice here. Dronina was the most musical, but her technique was bad. Technically, Somova was the best, and musically, Dronina was the best. Guillem was unbearable to watch. I never liked her.

    • @musicloverlondon6070
      @musicloverlondon6070 2 ปีที่แล้ว +9

      I went to see Guillem once at Royal Opera House in London. I had always enjoyed her dancing but when I and a group of fans were waiting outside in the cold hoping to see her come out of the stage door after the performance I was shocked and disappointed to see her reaction. She glared long and hard at the group of fans through the glass door and literally stamped her foot. Her face was very angry and I could see her mouth moving and hear that her voice was raised but could not hear what was being said (perhaps that was just as well!). This went on for several minutes in what, I'm afraid, looked exactly like a tantrum.
      The other dancers surrounding her in the foyer looked embarrassed and nobody else appeared to speak. I've often waited for other equally well-known performers following a ballet and I can certainly understand that they might be tired and not in the mood to see fans but I'd never experienced anything like that before. I noticed that none of the other dancers made any difficulty in also signing authographs for the group. It forever coloured my view of her, despite her dancing abilities. I could never bring myself to buy tickets to see her again as it would always recall to my mind the memory of that demonstration of sheer aggression and disdain.
      Usually, performers will sign a few autographs as they leave but this time they decided to open the door and let us into the foyer. I think most people felt they might as well go in as they had waited so long in the cold but I could tell others in the group were annoyed. I debated on leaving but in the end I went in and got her autograph - not because I wanted it, following that display, but because I knew that she grudged giving it.
      I don't doubt that her fans will be very unhappy with my criticism but I'm afraid no amount of talent or success excuses that sort of treatment of fans, many of whom have to struggle to afford a ticket and are, after all, the bread and butter of the arts. It happened many years ago but I've never forgotten it. I threw the autograph away shortly afterwards.

      That's horrible! I never knew that she was so awful. It must have been terrible to see a dancer you liked so much acting like that!

      @@galinayepanchina6443 It's the one and only time I've ever had that kind of experience with a dancer after a performance. On the plus side Andris Liepa was lovely to the fans, having just danced the demanding role of Petroushka. Irek Mukhamedov, Yelena Pankova, Jonathan Cope and Stuart Cassidy were also great. All the dancers I met behaved with politeness. I don't wait outside stage doors any more but will always treasure my signed programmes and memories from those days.

      @@beatiroide I couldn't agree more, especially when you consider how difficult it is for most ballet companies to make ends meet. Interestingly, although they appeared to feel awkward because of the situation, none of the dancers/staff around Sylvie at the time looked surprised. That made me wonder if perhaps it wasn't a one-off incident.

    Comincio a vedere la faccia spenta della guillelm e già sbadiglio. La ginnastica non è tutto. Alina Somova, Russian do it better.

    Everything is performed quite cleanly, but this is pure classics, requiring classic lines and proportions. Sylvie Guillem has short legs and insufficiently everted feet. Jurgita Dronina is not proportionally folded enough. Alina Somova performs as in a lesson, more inspiration would be. There is no tolerance in ballet, otherwise the meaning of ballet as an art is lost.
