It's a pretty casual game, it's just not meant to be finished in the first couple of tries.
You get coins for each night you survive and can get upgrades and more defensive buildings with those.

What I like in Mindustry is rushing to the enemy spawn location, walling it off and putting a supply chain to a ton of towers.
Free up the entire map for resource exploitation.
When flying enemy are added in the waves I just put pockets of air defenses from their spawn to the core

It’s one of them games where you have to fail over and over to get enough coins to upgrade then it should become easier
