Yes it's definitely way overwhelming considering it was only day 2 and not even the night time raid.

It's a pretty casual game, it's just not meant to be finished in the first couple of tries.
You get coins for each night you survive and can get upgrades and more defensive buildings with those.

So the usual type of casual progression and doing massive amounts of runs to build up and upgrade things permanently.

What I like in Mindustry is rushing to the enemy spawn location, walling it off and putting a supply chain to a ton of towers.
Free up the entire map for resource exploitation.
When flying enemy are added in the waves I just put pockets of air defenses from their spawn to the core
