Would you have an idea as to what I’m doing wrong that’s causing the piece before the black to curl inward?

Hi Debra! Sorry for the delay in responding. If its curling up too much after the white petals please make sure that you have the correct number of petals. If you do in fact have 16 petals then when you start crocheting the black "granny square" part it should flatten out. If this still doesn't help try going up a hook size, or blocking your squares after you crochet them. If you need any more help you can email me [e-mail] and I can try to help you better.
