I love how so much of what appears to be camera movement, is actually everything else in the set shifting in place instead. No matter how hard I try, I simply cannot view the slide section and not think "they are sliding really quickly" instead of "the walls are shifting". This is great.
Something that I like about these animations is that they give so much emotion to Mario and the behind the scenes also shows how all of the camera movement brings this animation to life.
I can't believe how much more dynamic your camera movement makes this. Watching the unrendered footage is so simple and plain. With the added camera movement, it changed EVERYTHING. That's so impressive.
0:38 I love that you took the time to add the original text to the signs 1:02 i thought he was holding it with both hands and that he let go of this left, but this is a smart choise from an animating perspective 1:45 "WHO DARES AWAKEN ME FROM MY SLUMBER" 2:03 I thought this was made on purpose to sell the illusion that it's a curvy slide 2:20 naaaah bro missed, what was that hitreg? XD 2:43 I don't understand this one tho, it looks so goofy how mario's body slides away
Glad you enjoyed all the behind the scenes looks! And the reason he's sliding off to the side in that last shot was because I was getting him in position for the following shot. Looks weird off camera though
1:35 the same for the sigh in the start area (0:38) 2:03 I though the leg got another angle and was hidden by the little high difference of the edge Really nice made. I love it.
A bit off-topic, but could you please make a short Zelda animation of Link and the cuccos? It would make sense if you used Toon Link as he is way more expressive.
The first shot where he pulls himself up using the fence, he was too short to be seen over the fence, but I needed him to be seen for the shot. So I made him taller so it'd work in camera for that shot, then had to readjust everything so it'd all work for the second shot.
I just love the techniques that have been used to make this. There was a lot of "illusions", to make us see something else than what is already displayed (like the wall of the slide moving), and the models seem to "prepare for the animation" in the background, when we don't see them. They are also often in poses we don't expect them to see when out of the camera's bounds. It surprisingly works very well. Fascinating!
This really makes me want to try learning blender again. I gaved up because I was so much overwhelmed and didn't knew how to actually learn except watching tutorials. Even looking for a simple animation tutorial step by step is difficult when searching on TH-cam for some reason... Anyways amazing work! Loved both videos!!
I get it. Blender is super intimidating at first, but once you get the hang of it it's (mostly) uphill from there. Hope you find the motivation to give it another go some day. And thank you for the support!
2:10 - 2:23 is so silly "yeah, i'll wait for you to come." "im coming!" *freezes* "ha! gotcha!" *penguin looks traumatized" *penguin INSTANTLY looks devious and summons 2 snowballs* *misses HORRIBLY while mario just sits there* "oh right, i'm supposed to get hit" /summon minecraft:snowball ~ 10 ~
The song that plays thoughout this video sounds like the smw bowser theme at certain points. that was the main thing on my mind through this whole video
So is this like digital nonstop-motion claymation? If so, it's still really talented work. The fact that You were able to make these animations look like something from an actual studio is impressive And I'm not going to lie.I would really like to see more mario style animations like this
I'm probably not the best teacher. I'm sure my methods would be bad/inefficient habits to pass on to other people, but all I'll say is I used a lot of noise displacement on the environment
Thank you! And I'm not sure. I really was just inspired by classic Looney Tunes as well as general 3d movie animation you see today. Sorry I couldn't give better direction
Ooo itd be so cool to animate some sorta thing about mario dying and coming back to life after being blown up like that, the sm64 manual says something about dead Marios being 1ups 💀💀
Through a process of painstakingly going to each frame with whack motion blur and adjusting the keyframes for that specific frame render until the whole short played smoothly.
If I may ask, for the scenes that are a recap of the original, are you somehow able to get the original assets, files, etc., and play them again or something? Plus, you somehow add the Mama penguin or build off of the animation that was there previously. I'm not an animator, so I have no idea how this all works.
That was a well worded question and it makes perfect sense, so no worries about not knowing how it all works. To answer your question: Yes, I have the old file for the original and used it to build on for the sequel. I keep all my files saved.
It was incredible, I wonder what kind of project you'll do in the future, maybe you'll make a fight with bowser ! With your EXTREMELY HIGH ANIMATION LEVEL it would be EZ for u, oh yeah one last question. Was it somple to make this animation ? And how long does it tooks ?
Thank you! And I'd say overall it was a pretty difficult one to animate. Especially with all the moving environments. It took around a total of 6 months to animate if I had to guess.
I love how so much of what appears to be camera movement, is actually everything else in the set shifting in place instead.
No matter how hard I try, I simply cannot view the slide section and not think "they are sliding really quickly" instead of "the walls are shifting".
This is great.
That's exactly what I wanna hear! Glad it translates correctly!

Same here! So I'm happy to see that people feel the same way!

Thank you so much! A lot of animation is a game of illusion, so if videos like this are shocking it means I did my job correctly, so thank you!
I like how you placed the line of coins at 3:16, even though they were only in-frame for like less than a second;
That whole set was created for a shot that only lasted a second, so I'm glad you appreciate it
