Impeccable build John. Like others said the attention to detail and professionalism when building this great machine is a joy to watch. I don't know if it's your own bike but if so, enjoy the miles. Cheers from the Netherlands
What exactly does tapping mean? I dont quite understand the first step he did with each threas. Im assuming the the holes come threaded from factory, so what did he doe with his tool? Remove paint that got into the thread?
What a joy that was to watch! I can tell you put alot of care into the part selection and assembly all backed with plenty of knowledge. Love the quill stem and I think I need to include that in my next bike.
Wonderful build, I really loved it. One think that keept from being perfenct is the fact that you failed to align the big chain ring wih the crank arm, it hurt my eye. 😀
Yeah that and the single bottle cage didn't make sense to me. I get two downtube shifters for full retro vibes, but I don't get half and half. But to each their own. Its still a lovely build otherwise, I just don't get the form or function of those choices.
12:44 I was obsessed with that skee mask album for a long time. Also I’m wondering if you have any problems running the hope rotors with the klampers…I’ve ordered parts and am about to start building a wheel set
Fantastic job and to take the time to video it, thank you. The one thing I am not sure on was after cleaning the chain and it goes into the crockpot and ice bath? Was that a wax and if so what kind?
Lovely ride. That looks like the leather wrap Rene Herse sells. I highly recommend checking out Leh Cycles leather bar tape. It's seamless and way softer.
Lovely build. Personally would have more seatpost exposed. So different frame shape. However I appreciate this is based on a particular style and period in bike design history.
@@mangpots7284 simply the style of bike. Over history frame styles change. In the 1960’s was the fashion to have large frames and small amount of seatpost exposed. Then over time has become the trend to have lots of seatpost exposed and more compact frame with sloping top tube. Seat height from pedals to seat the same..seat tube shorter.
Sweet build man. This is a dream bike for me. Is it standard for braze-ons to come un-tapped like that on a new frame? Never bought a new frame so just curious 😅
They are tapped but often not perfect and have paint/clear other debris. I just ran a tap through to clean the threads. Not essential but a step I always take!
Hi, I am fairly new on the whole building bikes world. I was wondering what do you add to the M4 screws at the beginning of the video. Is it grease? Sealing to prevent water from entering in the frame?
Could you share any details on how you routed the dynamo cable? I have a 2022 Romanceur with a dynamo cable port on the fork leg, and can't for the life of me work out how to use it
awesome bike and build! been eyeing the same bike from crust as well. I'm just wondering why you had to tap the mounting points, don't they come pre-tapped?
he's only removing paint from existing threads, it's called thread chasing, an important step, for any respectable shop, when building up a brand new frame or a repainted frame.
@@cosinus_square if you don't do that what are the consequences? Does the paint prohibit screws from beeing fit correctly or does it just make it a bit harder to get them in? Or does it potentially damage the thread in the long run, since there are extra particles grinding in the thread?
@@prokopf-9332 Yes, screws won't fit properly, if forced they may even seize or brake a braze-on mount in some cases if not careful. Some major things can go wrong as well like cross threading and misalignment of bottom bracket cups or rear derailleur mounting bolt. Incorrect fit and torque settings resulting in damage to carbon fibre components like cranks or seatposts, reduced performance and service life for disc brake calipers or bottom bracket bearings. Facing and thread chasing helps avoid damage to paint around threaded or press fit areas as well. OP is building this bike for himself but bike building is generally a service provided by bike shops to customers, if any damage results from the build process, the bike shop will be liable for damaging customer property. For example, damaging paint on a brand new Pegorreti frame can possibly make a bike shop liable for thousands in paint repair costs alone.Well worth spending the money and time for tools and process if one is part of this trade.
For the bag; what do you use as a stiffener under which the voile straps sit? Have been curious what material peopple use for this as well as what materials to use for the webbing which holds the stiffener :)
@@RonJigheimer ah awesome thanks for the info man! May I ask how you got the holes in the material in front of it (for the voile straps I presume?) cheers!
How much paint was in those threads? I just rattled canned like 5 coats in total on my bike and did not have to chase any threads. That wasn’t because I was super careful or good at painting either. If it makes you feel better than you do you! But I somehow doubt that was necessary- just trying to save you a step on your or anyone else’s next build. Super cool bike, by the way.
@@striknein not chasing holes isn’t cutting corners. People should do whatever they want with their bikes- I’m not trying to tell anyone they shouldn’t do something they want to do. I just question if it’s necessary.
Both are friction. Two different brands and location for fun. I don’t use my front derailleur as much, so to save a run of cable I put it on the down tube, less weight. I like the Retroshift up top because I don’t have to change the position I am in to shift
Question - did you purposely put the chainrings on in the incorrect position? That pin that sticks out from the outer ring is usually supposed to go behind the crankarm to prevent the chain from getting stuck if it falls to the outside of the chainring. But this is an absolute dream build!
There was actually a little vent hole in the top of the plastic lid for my “Little Dipper”. The thermometer fit perfectly in there and I was able to adjust it so it was sitting in the middle of the wax for an accurate reading. Drilling a little hole would work just the same!
can you upload a pattern for the bag to wetransfer? you could put it in the description. I see a few others have been asking for it too.

I've watched a lot of build videos. I've never seen anyone polishing hubs and chainrings 😍
Beautiful bike and exceptional attention to detail. For my preference canti brakes and different shifter set up the rest is spot on.
24/7 live stream of John Tapping poorly prepped for paint threading..... tune in now and every day all day long :P
When you busted out the jars and the instant pot I knew this build was going to be perfection!
Somebody has a lot of money and they’ve spent it wisely. That’s a lifetime investment right there. Congratulations on the build. So nice to watch.

I find it funny that the first five minutes was just literally tapping threads.
Funny peculiar/boring.
