@1:41:54. Da Coach-One of the main reasons the Bears continued to struggle at QB. Tzack, Harbaugh, and flutie all did better after leaving Bears, although Flutie time with Bears limited. Also, I don’t recall any Ditka coaching proteges who went on to do anything anywhere else in the NFL. Bears coaching staff not the best at adjusting, and that hurt them after 85 when they could not just dominate on talent AND the league adjusted to them.
To be fair, Jim Harbaugh considers himself as somewhat of a protege of his. He certainly embodies his rage and on field antics. Also, Sean Payton played for Ditka and was an assistant coach under Ditka in New Orleons. Those are both pretty solid names
@@Ditka-89 Great points on both. Recently saw a video of Harbaugh being interviewed at camp when with the Bears and I was shocked at how “in awe” he was of Ditka. I did not know that Payton was a Ditka assistant with the saints-great example.
@@Ditka-89 I agree. Ditka had some leadership traits, and overall a much better head coach than Buddy Ryan. But he was still mediocre because of his reluctance to adjust, and his insistence on running a very basic and predictable offense. On dealings with players Ditka's approach wore off quickly and especially with veterans. When he embraced strike players in 87, and stole chunky endorsement from Covert and another lineman, nearly all the players lost respect for him.

Yeah! Right on Jamie! I've been looking for the entirety of this game for a long time! All that was available of this game was the last second field goal attempt by the Bears Kevin Butler. I watched this game as a 13 year old back in mid December 1986. This game was like many others the Bears had in 1986. Tough, low scoring, tense and nail biters. Great upload!

Payton was really all they had, but he was old by this time, but still the centerpiece of the offense because their passing game was virtually nonexistent. Other teams knew this and just started stacking the box to stop Payton (later Neal Anderson) and forcing the bears to try and beat them through the air. The defense was the main reason the bears were consistent contenders in the 80s. But they were on the field way too long and got worn down. Plus, teams had figured out the 46’s weaknesses and started exploiting them left and right. Add in injuries, trades, and free agencies, and this was never going to be a dynasty. Plus, Ditka was too stubborn and set in his ways. Richard Dent once famously said: “Ditka was the reason we won Super Bowl XX…and the reason we never won another one.”
I'd say finishing 14-2 in the regular season without Buddy Ryan, McMahon, Frazier, etc. was pretty damn good for the 1986 Bears. Defense was not the problem for the 1986 Bears. The defense set an NFL record for points allowed that lasted 15 seasons until the 2000 Baltimore Ravens broke it. The Bears just ran into a solid veteran, playoff tested team in the Redskins and great coaches Joe Gibbs and defensive coordinator and former Bears great Richie Pettibone.

Neither Ryan or Frazier was there in 1986 Ryan was coaching the Eagles, and Frazier had been forced to retire by a severe knee injury suffered in the Super Bowl
I will probably catch some shit for this, but I have always strongly felt that the Bears would have beaten the Giants this season if Ditka hadn't have been a dumbass and started Fluite in the Divisional game against the Redskins. Should have started Fuller.
@MikeyStoneking I agree that Fuller should have started as he defeated the Redskins at RFK in the playoffs in 1984. While Flutie would become a good QB, he wasn't ready and he was a source of controversy as his teammates saw him as an outsider, especially McMahon, Fuller and Tomzak. And it didn't help Flutie's cause that he had Thanksgiving dinner at Ditka's house.
Boston College Boppa was pretty good in the NFL it's too bad McMahon didn't bring him up .. McMahon felt threatened by flutie I bet but really if Jim coulda got his ass out there he woulda been QB1 but he stayed hurt bad!!! This was a frustrating thing because they were so damn good
Ugh. He wasn't _threatened_ by Flutie. He felt, as did the whole team, that Steve Fuller and Mike Tomczak should've been shown the confidence by Ditka to lead the Bears offense. Fuller had proved himself in combat conditions, leading the Bears to a playoff win AT Washington in 84 . . . the only time the Redskins ever lost a playoff game at RFK. And McMahon got his shoulder _obliterated_ on a late hit, a _criminally_ late hit, by Charles Martin in wk12 that season.

Them bears were close to unbeatable most Sundays and Mondays w Mac out there it was hard to watch still bothers me to this day ... He signs him late in the season, insulting a quarterback that he had shown confidence in in 84 and 85, and that really upset the chemistry on the team to begin with. However, he was really insane, and the defensive players all felt this way, to start Flutie in that 86 playoff game against the Redskins. It was just his 2nd NFL start, and Flutie didn't even really know the offense yet.

This was a very talented team .... BUT they were nearly unbeatable with Buddy Ryan ,Leslie Frazier, and most importantly Jim McMahon!
