    Check out Car Issues for what we did with this car, but to summarize, it is a flood salvage car with an engine that needs a Vanos rebuild, the trans is making noise, every light on, and then you'll see how horrific it looks underneath. My last drive up the car was screaming to let it die, the wizard obliged.

    Now retired I was involved with the development of the E36 around 1989/90 . The bean counters horrified me to be honest especially for the cheap interior.The engines were great of course and I was in body engineering to meet anticipated safety laws.They did well in the in house safety tests, NCAP would come along several years later and we had to concentrate on offset protection which we did build into E34 E32.Lower paint quality on E36 and while this rust is unusual,they were 70% hot dip galvanised as opposed to 100% for E38 E39.Profits were very good on these cars and a good well maintained one is worth having,the best being 325i 328i.

      This is what every 10 year old winter-driven vehicle looks like here in the rust belt. Most of our scrap yards don't bother with vehicles over ten years. Not enough of them left on the roads to keep the junked ones around to sell parts. Straight to the crusher they go.

    As a bmw owner. I need those cams. These cars can be parted out and a killing can be made. Those seats are worth 700-1500$. The cams are worth 500-700$. The heads are sought after. The rims are 500-700$. Mirrors are worth 250-300$. All of the M control arms and brakes are worth a good chunk. The axles are worth money. Depending on the year that 3.23LSD is worth 500-700$.

    It's really sad that someone let this car get this bad. I have had three of these cars in my life time and currently own one, the first one was in our family for 15 years and we only had to replace a radiator, was sold 12 years ago and is still daily driven to this day. These cars are extremely reliable when kept up, its examples like these that give older BMW's a bad name. This is my favorite car in the world and probably the only thing I don't agree with the Wizard on. But yeah that thing was trashed. Once the underside of these cars start to get rusty they go really quickly.

    • @jwenting
      @jwenting 2 ปีที่แล้ว +28

      Correct. It's not the car, it the people owning them as they get older who trash them and turn them into clunkers.
      A lot of 3 series BMWs here last 20-30 years or more and still going strong because they're well maintained by people who love their cars, not junked by teenagers who don't give a darn because they got it from dad from a used car lot when they got their drivers license and neither maintain it nor drive it properly.
      Which is sadly the lot of a lot of BMWs in the US and a lot of hot hatches in Europe.

      hardly, BMW stopped GAF about quality in the early 90s or late 80s depending on model, a million buttons of which at best of times half ever worked at any one time. A friend had a 328i of this gen with an M3 engine swap and last I saw him he had spent 5yrs trying to get it done. It ran, off and on, sounded great when it did but it always had more stuff that didn't work than what did work, and it spent most of the time in pieces. Meanwhile I had a VW New Beetle with way more mods that worked 100% about 95% of the time, the 5% not working was me tearing it apart to mod it more. Never had a beamer and never will, VW, Opel, Toyota and Mitsubishi may not be as 'cool' but they work, unlike BMW.

    I owned a 1997 BMW 328is (very similar to the M3). It was the MOST fun to drive car I ever owned. Fast and very precise. In the end it just got old and too expensive to keep on the road. It still makes me grin to think about my "more than willing accomplice to my commuting transgressions".

      That's in better shape than my 1995 Dodge Dakota pickup truck and, being in Michigan, means I can still drive it since we don't have inspections. If we did, pretty sure at least 25% of all vehicles would be yanked off the road and there would be a massive riot.

      I have seen brakelines rustier than that on cars that HAVE passed their yearly safety inspection here in Finland. A car that's 25 years old, long harsh winters and a lot of road salt and presto that's what you will have. Yes, that particular car is a piece of crap especially with the rust on the floorpanels but other than that, there wasn't anything truly shocking to me per se. Obviously that car hasn't been cared for at all and it shows. Scrapping it for parts is definitely the thing to do.

    Nothing is not salvageable, if you want to see how its done watch Car SOS or the myriad of US restorers. Its a shame that for the sake of a vlog the vehicle was condemned without giving a balanced view. If the intent was to part it out then that could have been said at the beginning. I don;t understand why the Wizard took the vehicle as the whole process could not have been economically viable unless of course that Hoovie was cash strapped and the Wizard was given no choice.
