    Epic. The retrievals from both players is phenomenal. Ability to get out of trouble-just amazing. Asal has a better power game than anyone else at the moment.

      Power game may not be that good a tool at this level because the top echelons of a professional game can reach any place in the blink of an eye. Strategy and tactics are more useful to a player than power. However power combined with tactic are deadliest thing. Farag is a shining example of my argument

    Love Paul. I’ve been watching Paul coming along to get the number 1 spot and I am really happy he got it, still deserves it. He will get there again. But this matches with Asal are going to keep happening and he needs to find the way to move on and destroy this wall in front of him. (That’s what number 1 players do, new thread shows up and find the way to defeat it). “Asal” in the other hand is learning how the players should play on the tour. I Like how hungry he is and is not wrong wanting number 1 spot but just not his time yet. Keep working hard at it. U will reach it one day. “When the time is right”.

    I always enjoy the commentary but somehow the commentators' bias for Coll was a bit too much. I could understand the bias if Coll was from England but he's not....

  • @Themethodmix
    @Themethodmix 2 ปีที่แล้ว +3

    I’m very glad that first “no let” was overruled to a stroke. Even if the intent was an attacking kill shot, the ball came bouncing back towards Coll.
    Generally speaking (overall), it‘s my opinion that the bias of referees should shift to the incoming striker more in most cases. Unless they’re going for a ball directly lateral to them, the optimal footpath to hitting a ball is more of an arch or “L” verses a direct line. Referees often fail to take this into account. The quality of the shot should decide it’s retrievability-not the quality of the block coming off a shot, whether “T” intentioned or otherwise. The top priorities of the player coming off their shot should be both safety and access for the incoming striker.

    I started racquet sports back in the 70s as a teen when my baseball opportunities were vanishing. My dad got my playing squash but then everything went racquetball and that's what I played for the most part the rest of my playing days. So I'm just now getting to see squash again. I love watching Coll cause he's a diver and a getter which is big in racquetball, but he seems to lack the put away shot(s) that others have, content on wearing his opponent down. Just wondering why squash players don't use the side wall more, in racquetball it's a huge tactic.

    • @baseballgenius3
      @baseballgenius3 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      What exactly do you mean by “use the side wall more”?
      In squash you primarily use the side wall by hitting the ball tight and parallel to the side wall making it hard to do much with the next shot. Hitting angles, like the boast (sidewall then front wall) is very risky as it opens up the court a lot and has smaller margin for error. So it is best used as a change of pace or defensive shot, not as a regular attacking shot.
      I also transitioned from baseball to squash after college, absolutely love the game. Glad you’re getting back to it! I find it so much more enjoyable to play than racquetball.

    • @stevemd6488
      @stevemd6488 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@baseballgenius3 The "boast" in squash is called "pinch" in racquetball, but there is a very wicked shot in racquetball called the "splat" that is hit high off the side wall but deep in the court aimed so the ball hits the front wall and dies from the spin. Might not work in squash as well. Either way rather than just down the line throw some more boasts in, it's more distance your opponent has to cover. Elias uses this a lot.

    • @baseballgenius3
      @baseballgenius3 2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      @@stevemd6488 squash balls don’t take spin anywhere near as much as racquetballs do. Spin can have minor influences but what you’re describing doesn’t sound like it would translate well.
      A good working boast (one that hits the front wall near the middle and then 2nd bounce is near the side wall) is a great way to make the opponent move around when hit well. Borja Golan comes to mind for his use of the boast. In general squash is a pretty defensive game - the risk of a bad boast often outweighs the benefit of a good one.
      Up until around 2010, squash was very defensive. Then there was a decade where the game became very offensive, with players like Ashour and Gawad among others shaping the game to be more open and skill based. Now players like Coll and Makin are finding a renaissance in the game with a very physical, attritional, and defensive style again. It’s been cool to see the game evolve since I got into it in 2008.

      Asal seems to have figured out like many other players that these days if you get something loose on the forehand behind the T that you can just smash it and walk into your opponents line. It needs be be given as a let all day long. But it gets no let's because they don't want to go back to the old days where 1 in 3 points ended in let's.

    • @adielhoward6271
      @adielhoward6271 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@martincollins6632 On the other hand, you could say that Coll figured the best way to salvage his weak shot to the forehand to save the point, is by going straight toward his opponent enforcing a let. Players have become sneaky against Asal this way.

    • @martincollins6632
      @martincollins6632 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@adielhoward6271 at this level there is only one way to return those kinds of power forehand shots when both players are right handed. The correct result is let ball. They should play to the open court or keep it so tight that the opponent has to go to the back. Having the ball die at the mid court when you are blocking access to the mid court is not the way the principles of the game are meant to work. But this is how the game has evolved at the top level. More let calls would force players into free flowing play. But younalso have lots more let's and the WSF has decided they want less let's. This is why players with a style similar to Asal are able to have success with their blocking strategy.

    • @adielhoward6271
      @adielhoward6271 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@martincollins6632 No doubt the game would be much more free flowing if every player decided to play to the open court. However, with the power that most of the top players generate off the forehand, there's little reason not to play to the opponent's forehand in the hope of a winning.shot Sometimes, players don't always manage to play the low shots to the back of the court because of the high pace at which the game is played. This doesn't mean that they don't intend to play the ball to the back. When the player plays the ball mid-court he literally has a fraction of a second to get to the centre or move away from his opponent. (of course it becomes impossible to move this quick) Hence the accusation of blocking becomes a matter of speculation. In this very game, John disallowed Paul's appeal for a let because the ball had been out his reach and closer to the wall. And this is the reason I claim that players have become sneaky against Asal always hoping to score a let by deliberately barging into him. All the top players have been adopting this strategy.
