- The day before the September 2011 "Big Four" concert at Yankee Stadium in New York, Slayer's Kerry King came to The Music Zoo to hang out. Here's Kerry getting comfortable with a killer signature model BC Rich and having a good time.

Doesn't matter what everyone thinks, he was around then, and he's still here. He may not be as technical as other guitar players but he's outlasted them. Others just come and go.

He outlasted them literally. I’d like to see any guitarist try and go up there, play a 2, 2.5 hour Slayer show with all these songs and tell us how his right arm feels after that😅 “Technical” can mean a lot of different things. Sweep wankery and tapping are all good but won’t get you anywhere when you need to play a thrash song.

Guys like him, Dave Mustaine, Scott Ian, and James Hetfield were extremely innovative and visionary in the creation of variations of metal. They certainly deserve their places in the metal history books.
I balk at this. Kerry is good but not great. He was carried HEAVILY by Jeff, Tom, and Paul. He is nowhere near the talent of James or Dave. Jeff innovated the sound of Slayer and Kerry didn't want to on Seasons. Said it was too slow. MF is all bravado and show.
@tylerjohnson5949 Jeff learned a lot of what he knew from Kerry when the band was getting going with him saying Kerry was a better player.
He wanted Slayer to be the AC/DC of heavy metal, and he saw it through. Much respect for this artist.
I'm a little bit impressed about his leads, but I'm REALLY impressed at his rhythm playing...he can pick up rhythm sections of a song *snap* like that!

All through high school Slayer was my trusty go to band... Got to finally see play Sydney earlier this year... Excellent show. Even saw them at the airport boarding for Melbourne the next day.... I was too scared to approach or say hello for some wierd reason....

The tapping at the beginning is taken from the song "War Ensemble". But Kerry was not warmed up, so he did a few mistakes.

@@AaronAzkidMatier well you could say that, but then you have to ask yourself what is "good" obviously he is very good at writing killer metal riffs that inspired legions of guitar players and made alot of people fans of metal. I would consider that good. The guy sitting in his basement who can sweep pick and tap perfectly at light speed and makes TH-cam videos will never be able to write those riffs that compare to what King has done.

@lmnguy Actually, I met Kerry in person at a movie theater in Waterford CT he was very friendly and laid back.
Maybe he's not the best in solo guitar but he's a beast in rythm guitar!! ;)

My first slayer tape I bought in probably 87 it was "show no mercy" then about in 88 I bought "chapel of ghouls " I had all the slayer tapes but unfortunately I lost them thru time and multiple moves and stuff.

Shows that Kerry is all about the business, to do a demonstration before a big show, thats fuckin dedication. And also he shows his down to earth style of playing, prolly because he was just hangin out before the show.

Dude, thank you. That is the bottom fucking line - he formed one of the MOST influential bands of modern day, he doesn't owe shit to the "music police" dorks. SO FUCKING WHAT if he can't do arpeggios like Yngwie (or other shredders) He wrote AT LEAST half of Slayer's music, usually the better songs!!!

I've seen slayer live a few times, and I was always in front of Kerry. Live, he sounds great (at least the shows I've seen). And many of his earlier solos, were quite good (divine intervention, seasons in the abyss or war enseble, for example, were great). Sadly, his 'new' stuff, and by that I mean everything post Diablous (OK, the song God hates us all is good), isn't all that great. When I go to a Slayer concert, I only want to hear their older material.

I read all the comments and I wonder where does all the hate towards Kerry's guitar playing come from. Yeah, Slayer went mediocre after Season in the Abyss, but still I love that band for their earlier work, especially the first two albums, since it was a greaaaaaaaat inspiration for the extreme metal community. Besides, Kerry's sitting there, playing a guitar as he would in his home and we have some people bitching about him not shredding the fuck out the axe. Oh, and the amplifier sucks.

I made that comment in another YT vid, and some jack-hole replied that Kerry was "just the face of Slayer" and that "Jeff Hanneman was the REAL guitar in Slayer".

Their song Spill The Blood. It came out on their South Of Heaven album. Its a pretty good song. He is playing the verse riff.

I always felt like Kerry is not one of those Natural players. It seems like he is not "struggling" but it does not feel like he is on the level as Marty Friedman maybe even the "old" Kirk Hammet etc

So many guitar gods here it feels like I’m in a church! 😅 There’s a lot of guys here saying Kerry can’t play or even Slayer can’t play, nothing special. After spending quite a while playing thrash metal and still having my arm fall off if I play even one song, Angel of Death from start to finish, I’m really not sure how these guitars seem easy to you guys, I’d love to see you try. Going at 220-230 bpm not like a wimp but with a solid attack is a technique of its own! And I bet you if you ask half of the “good guitarists” to play a couple Slayer songs back to back they will fail miserably. We may say they’re not sophisticated or that the Slayer guys aren’t masters of shred wankery, but bloody hell going out there and playing 2 hours of this stuff on let’s say 250 tour dates a year - if that’s not “challenging” I really don’t know what is!

I was once a Slayer fan "Season's in the Abyss" era but when I finally got to meet Kerry it was a thrill for a beginning guitarist UNTIL I got the swelled head in his mini clinic. Played a riff from "Seasons" then said "If you can't play this, you have no business playing, just give it up" WOW! What an inspiring positive statement (sarcasm) to say to up and coming guitarists who came to see him. Was pretty much done with them after that, hard to listen to a swelled head & ego talking down to fellow players. I don't think Kerry is the most amazing guitarist, it's more that he's a house-hold name in metal; and an inspiration for many guitar players. Until you've done more than that, you don't have the right to 'hate on' him. Even then, you'd respect him because you wouldn't be an asshole.

Why does everyone bag on Kerry so much? We all know he's not the best but come on he helped to bring the band together, they all work together as a band plus isn't Kerry just rhythm guitar? His solos are decent but he plays pretty Decently too I think he writes the lyrics and some riffs too? I'd say he's a solid 8.5/10 for a rhythm guitarist
