Actually this story happens during emergency period i.e 1975-1976. During that period the ruling party DMK was dissolved by Indira gandhi. at that time DMK leader Karunanidhi and his son stalin (Now cheif minister of Tamil Nadu) was arrested under MISA act and also all the local leaders of DMK were arrested
This movie happened in 70's and that time dmk is a ruling party in tamil nadu (Dravida Munnetra Kazha(la)gam). This scene related to true incidents there a conflict between indra Gandhi govt and tamil nadu govt and this time central government cancel the dmk party's government.
The coach character Rangan is a DMK cadre in this movie ( the present ruling government of Tamilnadu). The towel he wears has the DMK Flag color mark (Black & Red), and you can see thier boxing robe with DMK symbol on it ( Raising sun ). During those Emergency period it was Dr. Kalaingar Karunanidhi the late DMK leader was the chief minister of tamil nadu, and karunanidhi is the only man in india and DMK is the only state political party which opposes Indira gandhi's emergency rule and its atrocities. Tamil nadu is the only state in whole india which was not affected by the emergency because of the chief minister Dr.Kalaingnar. Many national leaders came here to avoid the arrest. Then Indira gandhi dismissed DMK rule to invoke presidential rule and ordered to arrest all the DMK cadres under MISA act. Kalaingar son MK. Stalin was also arrested and jailed and was tortured. Stalin is now our chief minister

The subtext of the disrobing scene is.. Kabilan is from low caste so they cant stand him winning the match so they hit him and also made him naked to shame him.. So that he will never get confidence again to box again..
