I have kept an eye on Larry and Laurent since seeing their first performance on NBC’s World of Dance. They are great artists, plain and simple. Their history is full of hardship and poverty as the youngest of 9 children living with a single mom and a dad they rarely saw and didn’t ever give them love or support. They are from à Parisian suburb, Sarcelles, which is full of families who immigrated to France and represent a mixture of cultures and religions. They have danced since birth. As soon as their mama let them visit Paris by themselves, they were often dancing in it’s streets to be seen and pickup some cash for their efforts. One afternoon Alicia Keyes saw Laurent on the street and asked him to dance at her concert the same evening, he got Larry fired from his job and took him along. They hit the road to club dance and compete in battles all over Europe as sixteen year old dropouts. (Their family couldn’t afford a good higher education but their mom didn’t want them to try to make a living dancing.) Les Twins still belong to their dance crew from Sarcelles, Criminalz Crew, which has produced some exceptional dancers who are now making a living from dance. I’ve seen most of their videos and follow them on Instagram because fans never know when the next incredible performance is coming since dancing is a way of life for them as is staying in shape. They don’t drink, smoke or do drugs on the advice given to them at an early age probably from their great friend and mentor, Abibou Kébe, known as Playmo. Les Twins have a staggering body of work and the largest dance vocabulary I’ve ever seen. They have changed the art form throughout the globe. I’m always grateful when I see other people recognize their work and their genius. My background is in visual art and I danced for 12 years growing up, watching film and live performances of the greats in ballet and other forms of dance. There hasn’t really been a dancer who created groundbreaking choreography and mesmerized audiences since Nijinsky in the 1920’s. Les Twins have pushed the envelope so far and continue to create daily. I feel blessed to be alive and witness such an important and unrepeatable phenomenon in the arts.

A little history is there from Sarcelles, France. In their first ever battle, it was actually a set up, they were jumped, and stripped naked all because what they were doing "wasn't hip hop" in 2008 they became loved when they beat 2 of the top dogs in the hip hop community (Yungson and Tip). Juste Debout means just standing in French. This is basically the olympics for Hip hop, Locking, Popping, House, and Experimental style dancers
In the 2010 Juste Debout pre-selections, before they got on stage they were asked for autographs, pictures, people were asking them to their schools the whole 9.
Once they were finished they were boo'd off the stage by everyone in the venue. See their has changed almost every single year, even now. But the community didnt respect their new style and they were shunned because it "wasnt hip hop". The next year they came back won and absolutely ran through almost everyone in the competition. 400 dancers enter but only 16 make it to the main stage in Paris.

@@SimplyTwoDudesFirst time viewing your channel. Good reaction. Laurent and Larry are numbers 8 and 9 out of their family (in that order). Sarcelles is a poorer section of Paris. There are 18 of them in all. There is a video that gives their history. I believe it is called from Sarcelles to now (2020). Worth viewing.
Thank you for this reaction. I'm a huge fan. They started dancing as babies. Their history is deep, many hard challenges they've overcome on the way to being Artists. Now they have movies, music, workshops, modeling etc. Yes, Laurent (in wheelchair) injured his knee in a dance battle for the show. He eventually had to have surgery and still today he does things that defy gravity. I recommend the WOD 2014 performance if you haven't seen it yet. Blessings. Enjoyed this.
