My first memory of Caesar 3 was trying to install it and my PC couldn't run. Literally, after one hour reading the CD-ROM files to my PC freezing admiring the beautiful art of the colosseum and the celts. And now more than 20 years after I'm so glad for the community making this game alive, improving, making new missions, adding features. You all are really breathtaking.
There's been some attempts for Pharaoh, but the main thing is it took Bianca 10 years to make Julius for the open source port to start. Someone has to dedicate a decade to do it.
I stumbled upon this video randomly, I must say I’m glad I did. I bought the game when it first came out as a kid. Still have the disk but no disk player on my PC, haha. I purchased the game after watching your video and just finished downloading. Excited to start playing, the nostalgia is real. Thank You.

Love Caesar 3, still plays it until today.. First time played it on my Intel MMX 200 MHz way back since 1998.. still loves it until today. With the Augustus mod it makes the game more addicted..😆
I really gotta give you credit, man. I first played Caesar 3 when I was like 11 and thanks to this mod I'm enjoying it more than I ever have. The zoom especially makes things better. I don't even enjoy Emperor nearly as much after this mod showed how good these games can be now. Thanks for bringing it to everyone's attention, and thanks to the creators!
I have only just stumbled across Augustus and it's absolutely brought new life into one of my all time favourite games. Thankyou so much for the guide to installing the upgrade. It made everything so simple, from downloading the update patch, to loading and running Augustus. Everything worked beautifully first time and I'm now hooked again. The new features are an absolute delight to play and I can see many hours of enjoyment ahead. To anyone who hasn't tried Augustus yet, I can only urge you to do so as soon as you can, as it's genius.
I have been playing Caesar 3 since it's release and I still own my old cd-rom. I always appreciated, that Caesar 3 has been running on every windows version I ever owned, beginning with win 95. A few months ago I reactivated Caesar on my pc and discovered Julius while searching for old manuals etc. I put Julius on my android tablet and after making a few modifications it runs well. Today I discovered Augustus and finally stumbled over your video, where I found the link to a android version of Augustus. It was as simple as it could be - download - install - running! Thanks! Having one of my favourite games of the past in a modern version running on my tablet while sitting comfortably on my sofa is a gift! First I will try out all the new buildings and options in the city building part, then I will return to Caesaria, which cost me some nervs so far. Thanks again for your fine and clearly explained video!

One thing that I approached differently then when i was a child; is "barbarians" my older self has a little more historical reference to the relationship between "barbarain" and Roman. Today we would call it genocide what the romans did to the european, asian and african tribes. But Rome as an idea is glorified, and i see why. Which brings me to my idea. I would suggest this to the creators of augustus, but im not sure how to contact them. Wouldn't it be interesting to play as the Gauls? Or as Carthage? Or even have the ability to join either as a roman governor and take on rome? Would make the experience even more vast. I thought that maybe you have a way to talk to the creators, and maybe you could pass on the idea?
@@PhurLok66 It's technically possible but it would be a lot of work. One of the biggest limitations is how much art is needed for any kind of overhaul mod. There aren't a lot of artists working on Augustus so changes are mostly to do with systems and coding.
I understand that, it would be mostly art based. Yet I feel like a lot of the models are there already. The invading armies troops could be a base for each civilizations citizens. And it seems as though that they have an understanding of building models, as shown by the numerous additions. I get it would be a difficult process, but I believe it would bring even more people back to Caesar 3, & truly show off the skills of the mod makers : )
It's probably like 20 years ago when I first stumbled into this game It's probably around 2 years ago when I tried to complete it for real, but failed at the cost of almost losing my sanity with the walkers. Now, a month ago, I finally finished Caesar III with this mod~ Say what you will about how this mod makes the game 'easy', but it just made the game look better and complete my childhood dream.
I think the mod makes the game exactly as it should have been. The players NEEDS to be able to control the walkers. Also, global access to workers is realistic and makes sense. The rest of the options, the player has full control to make things as easy or as hard as he wants. I'm super duper impressed by this mod.

This is one of the better guides I've seen on modding a game. The slower pace and zooming in on relevant portions of the download page. So many guides are "Click this and this and this and it works". Yeah I guess but I have to pause so much to make sure I'm clicking the same thing and extracting the same files.
I'm glad you found it useful! When I make these I try to go slow and not cut things out. If anyone thinks I'm going too slow they probably don't need this video anyway.
Nice guide! I just downloaded 3.2 and used your instructions as a guide; thanks! Not all of those maps were in the map directory...no big deal though. Got the cinematics as well and I THINK I already had the music from the last download. ...I have heard it includes Plague. Sounds fun and realistic! Almost a completely new game but definitely still Caesar 3. It's refreshing that this has not been monetized by whoever owns the rights to this game.
Thanks! Yeah luckily the ones who own the rights don't really care about their old properties. Activision bought the ownership when Sierra auctioned off, so technically Activision owns Caesar 3.

It's mostly preference. You could turn on global employment if you like that. Maybe increase max grand temples to 5? Set custom hotkeys for common buildings and overlays.

All I have to say is ... OMG. This is, hands down, my favorite game of all time. I can't even calculate how many hours/days/weeks I've spent non-stop playing this game. I was always wanting more from it, obviously in 1998 the options for PC's were what they were, and this game definitely pushed the boundaries of the PC. I think at the time I had a 486dx-somethingorother, I can't even remember the designations back then. Even then it definitely made my PC crawl at times, and I had a pretty nice setup at the time. Being 50-something now, these nostalgic games always keep my attention. Currently I play more games released in the late 90's and early 2000's more than any new game. Not because the new games aren't good, but the first impressions (total shout-out) of games then, and what the genre turned into is huge. I spend most of my time on city builders, outside of C3, I played the original Sim Cities, Sim Tower (still on of my top 10 games), Sim Ant, Sim XYZ, etc. Kudos to all that decided to recreate this game, even after just an hour of playing Augustus, I'm already happy as a pig farm in... well you know. WASD was a big thing, and not having to scroll on the side of each window is probably the best QOL fix, at least for me. The windowed mode not allowing you to do anything else on your computer, as well as the smoothing of the game and different resolutions are huge also. I could go on and on, but you get the point. Thanks for putting out this video, you get a HUGE like from me.

Building a new computer and so excited to try playing the new modded version. I haven’t played Caesar 3 in 7 years and got it back in 1998 on my first computer after seeing it as a game demo. I loved Sierra Impressions games so much and am glad there’s now improvements. There’s no other games that compared to these city building ones
I am that kind of crazy person who plays the game with the Julius mod (the more "vanilla" version) on Steam and has the Augustus mod on GOG. Caesar III is def my favourite game since I was 9 and it brings me so much joy even today. ROMA CAPUT MUNDI!
I think i bought 3 cd versions of c3, the steam version and now the GOG version and i dont regret it at all, i feel like at least i can honor it a bit in 20+ years of playing this just perfect game

Does anybody know how to change in-game language? Apparently there are source files with translations for various languagues under the "augustus/src/translation" on github, but - in the game settings - I am not able to select any option for lanugage other than "(default)".
Zakh, you had me at "global access to workforce" Holy shit. Good things do happen in this world. CAESAR3 is actually playable now! I followed your steps and Augustus was installed with zero issues (I am using an old CD from 20 years ago which miraculously works still. I probably need to copy this CD and keep a backup) Holy crap ... every single issue I had with the original game seems to have been addressed. Soft timer on the game? GONE! you will always have a workforce available if you want. Road blocks! YES PLEASE! I can now fully control where the walkers go! I LOVE IT I LOVE IT!!!!!
ok, I did everything you said but I can‘t install music whait is uninportant but the real problem is that I can‘t save my progres. to be precise, there is saving window and I can save it, even I can see that save file in load window but when I colse the game and open it again the‘s nothing to load and I have to start new campaign again...please help best regards from belgrade, serbia

How suggest idea to the dev team ? It would be very cool to add a Multiplayer mod ; each player on a PC, possibility to send troops to help the other player if he s attacked, possibility to trade with it, and for SOLO or multiplayer possibility to attack a no roman city when we want, possibility to play the battle on a foreign city like when we are attacked by barbarian in our city, but we could play our roman army and begin in a corner of the city we want attack like barbarians ? Possibility to switch between our city and city captured to developp them... It could be a very very big upgrade to do that...
Thanks for the detailed video! I have the game on steam and after launching the augustus.exe file it asks me to point it to the Caesar 3 folder. Once I select it I get an error saying "Augustus requires the original files from Caesar 3 to run. The selected folder is not a proper Caesar 3 folder." Any ideas on what could be going wrong?
Thanks Zakh for the video. I installed it, very nice. The only problem I have now is hungry soldiers, although the supply post has a full granary next to it. (It's and old save of Londinium, from the original game). How can I resolve that?
I have a problem saving games. Augustus starts wel, but it says I don't have admin rights on the C3 map. I'm admin on my windows account, so I don't understand why this won't work.
Hmm it's a little tricky to answer definitively. They're pretty different at this point. You can't really know what the differences of Augustus are unless you're experienced with the vanilla game. I personally would use Julius for a refined vanilla experience until I'm feeling kind of 'done', then install Augustus for a new experience like New Game+ or something haha.
@@GamerZakh I installed the Augustus mod and it's so much easier with the quality of life features and interface I'm hooked one thing I dislike is the time consuming wait of the Colo and hippodrome for palace it just takes forever but overall it's addicting I'll finish the game in vanilla as you suggest I need to properly finish c3 first
I really wish this game would be expanded in order to have the "Province Management"! I played Caesar 2... bad quality graphics, I didn't like the city management BUT.... I loved the fact to manage also an entire province, see invaders etc.... this would be my "definitive edition"
Is there any way to make the "sea" not look like something out of paint? Because at the start of your video I almost thought that your game had glitches due to these vast areas of blue. I'm hoping there's some sort of graphics mod to make the sea look better.
There is a bit more detail on it when you play the game, TH-cam compression doesn't translate super fine details so some of it is lost. As for graphical replacements, it's possible but they have to be very careful as if enough of the game's visuals are replaced it might begin to be considered a standalone release and Activision would sue.

Whilte more defined, Rome1.mp3 does not sound as immersive as the rome1 released in the original game. The original is more eerie, sounds more like hardship in a desperate wideness. It's subtle but I think the original is slightly better arranged before the shipping of the game. But the other mp3 tracks do sound better and unchanged!
my assets folder only has cursers and graphics folders within it. I have uninstalled and re installed twice and not sure what I am doing wrong. I have got Augustus working but have not been able to get the new campaigns.
i found a separate download for the assets folder and tried that but its out of date because I have the 4.0 version on Augustus now. I am getting the screen to choose what campaign I want to start now, but only the original is in there. Any suggestions?
Yes but you gotta make sure your game is patched to the most recent version. The CD could be original or post official patch, but you can get the official patches pretty easy, they're on heaven games.
Dumb Q..I haven't played Caesar for years, my latest version was IV...was just saying to the wife about how they stopped making new versions so decided to google it, and all of sudden im seeing things about caesar III dated 2022...im no techie, so let me simply ask - has caesar III been updated, but not caesar IV?
Hey not a dumb Q at all! Basically what's happened was this developer, Bianca, spent 10 years making an open source engine to run Caesar 3 on new software. Because it's open source, anyone can change the code in any way, so now there's a development community that is developing Caesar 3 in new ways. You still need to have Caesar 3 installed because of copyright, easiest way is to buy it on GOG, but then the new engine can take the game's files and run it. There are 2 main branches of the project. Julius is complete at this point and it's basically just a refinement of the original game. Runs smoother, some UI tweaks, and stuff like that. Save files between the original game and Julius are interchangeable. Augustus is the still in development branch where save files are not compatible with the original game because they've taken gameplay in new directions. In Augustus there are monuments, new buildings, new and overhauled systems like a plague mechanic, and they're now working on editable world maps.
The assets folder comes from Augustus. If you're downloading the latest unstable, note next to the download button there is a link, "Download development assets". That's the assets folder.

Caesar 3 is my refference in city builders games, as Chrono Trigger is my refference in RPGs.
It's a shame there isn't a project similar to this for Pharaoh, Zeus or Emperor. All equally deserving. Augustus is such a great mod.

I am that kind of crazy person who plays the game with the Julius mod (the more "vanilla" version) on Steam and has the Augustus mod on GOG. Caesar III is def my favourite game since I was 9 and it brings me so much joy even today. ROMA CAPUT MUNDI!

I think i bought 3 cd versions of c3, the steam version and now the GOG version and i dont regret it at all, i feel like at least i can honor it a bit in 20+ years of playing this just perfect game

Does anybody know how to change in-game language? Apparently there are source files with translations for various languagues under the "augustus/src/translation" on github, but - in the game settings - I am not able to select any option for lanugage other than "(default)".

CAESAR3 is actually playable now! I followed your steps and Augustus was installed with zero issues (I am using an old CD from 20 years ago which miraculously works still. I probably need to copy this CD and keep a backup)
Holy crap ... every single issue I had with the original game seems to have been addressed.
Soft timer on the game? GONE! you will always have a workforce available if you want.

ok, I did everything you said but I can‘t install music whait is uninportant but the real problem is that I can‘t save my progres. to be precise, there is saving window and I can save it, even I can see that save file in load window but when I colse the game and open it again the‘s nothing to load and I have to start new campaign again...please help

I wish someone just paided the guy behind Augustus to offically remaster the whole game. That would be awesome.
How suggest idea to the dev team ? It would be very cool to add a Multiplayer mod ; each player on a PC, possibility to send troops to help the other player if he s attacked, possibility to trade with it, and for SOLO or multiplayer possibility to attack a no roman city when we want, possibility to play the battle on a foreign city like when we are attacked by barbarian in our city, but we could play our roman army and begin in a corner of the city we want attack like barbarians ? Possibility to switch between our city and city captured to developp them... It could be a very very big upgrade to do that...
Thanks for the detailed video! I have the game on steam and after launching the augustus.exe file it asks me to point it to the Caesar 3 folder. Once I select it I get an error saying "Augustus requires the original files from Caesar 3 to run. The selected folder is not a proper Caesar 3 folder." Any ideas on what could be going wrong?
Resolved! I was supposed to select the C3 folder inside the Caesar 3 folder

I have a problem saving games. Augustus starts wel, but it says I don't have admin rights on the C3 map. I'm admin on my windows account, so I don't understand why this won't work.

Hmm it's a little tricky to answer definitively. They're pretty different at this point. You can't really know what the differences of Augustus are unless you're experienced with the vanilla game. I personally would use Julius for a refined vanilla experience until I'm feeling kind of 'done', then install Augustus for a new experience like New Game+ or something haha.
@@GamerZakh I installed the Augustus mod and it's so much easier with the quality of life features and interface I'm hooked one thing I dislike is the time consuming wait of the Colo and hippodrome for palace it just takes forever but overall it's addicting I'll finish the game in vanilla as you suggest I need to properly finish c3 first
I really wish this game would be expanded in order to have the "Province Management"!
I played Caesar 2... bad quality graphics, I didn't like the city management BUT.... I loved the fact to manage also an entire province, see invaders etc.... this would be my "definitive edition"
The devs of Augustus want to do that but they said it's a massive amount of work to get something functional. So 'someday' is the word.

what's the latest Caesar 3 map editor ?
Is there any way to make the "sea" not look like something out of paint? Because at the start of your video I almost thought that your game had glitches due to these vast areas of blue. I'm hoping there's some sort of graphics mod to make the sea look better.
There is a bit more detail on it when you play the game, TH-cam compression doesn't translate super fine details so some of it is lost. As for graphical replacements, it's possible but they have to be very careful as if enough of the game's visuals are replaced it might begin to be considered a standalone release and Activision would sue.

Whilte more defined, Rome1.mp3 does not sound as immersive as the rome1 released in the original game. The original is more eerie, sounds more like hardship in a desperate wideness. It's subtle but I think the original is slightly better arranged before the shipping of the game. But the other mp3 tracks do sound better and unchanged!
my assets folder only has cursers and graphics folders within it. I have uninstalled and re installed twice and not sure what I am doing wrong. I have got Augustus working but have not been able to get the new campaigns.
i found a separate download for the assets folder and tried that but its out of date because I have the 4.0 version on Augustus now. I am getting the screen to choose what campaign I want to start now, but only the original is in there. Any suggestions?

Yes but you gotta make sure your game is patched to the most recent version. The CD could be original or post official patch, but you can get the official patches pretty easy, they're on heaven games.

Yeah you can mute music, there's separate audio controls for everything.
Dumb Q..I haven't played Caesar for years, my latest version was IV...was just saying to the wife about how they stopped making new versions so decided to google it, and all of sudden im seeing things about caesar III dated 2022...im no techie, so let me simply ask - has caesar III been updated, but not caesar IV?
Hey not a dumb Q at all! Basically what's happened was this developer, Bianca, spent 10 years making an open source engine to run Caesar 3 on new software. Because it's open source, anyone can change the code in any way, so now there's a development community that is developing Caesar 3 in new ways.
You still need to have Caesar 3 installed because of copyright, easiest way is to buy it on GOG, but then the new engine can take the game's files and run it.
There are 2 main branches of the project. Julius is complete at this point and it's basically just a refinement of the original game. Runs smoother, some UI tweaks, and stuff like that. Save files between the original game and Julius are interchangeable.
Augustus is the still in development branch where save files are not compatible with the original game because they've taken gameplay in new directions. In Augustus there are monuments, new buildings, new and overhauled systems like a plague mechanic, and they're now working on editable world maps.
Just getting around to trying to install Augustus. I just got the Steam version of Caesar 3. I don't have an assets folder? Not sur what to do?
The assets folder comes from Augustus. If you're downloading the latest unstable, note next to the download button there is a link, "Download development assets". That's the assets folder.
Is there any love for Lords of the realm 2? I wish people were modding it like this game.
