Thanks Michelle so much for this thorough explanation, it really helps me understand more about how sunscreens work. I have some questions to clarify:
    1. For inorganic sunscreens, does that mean the larger the particles, the less it can absorb? I put on inorganic sunscreens myself and found myself with a white cast. If I leave the white cast, it means it won't absorb UV lights?
    2. If I rub til I can barely see the white, does that mean it is broken down into smaller pieces and more surface area gets exposed and more UV can be absorbed?
    Thank you!!

You explain this stuff my better than my high school chemistry teacher did. Maybe if you’d been teaching me, I wouldn’t have dropped chem for legal studies.
Though also, I was put off by the massive amounts of maths. No maths in law! Which would be why, when I discovered the also massive amounts of maths in psychology degrees, I switched to Law at uni. (Are we seeing a pattern here?)
Basically, law is much easier to understand than chemistry or maths. Though I did really enjoy biology. I just couldn’t deal with all the maths in chemistry and physics.

I have a degree in nuclear engineering. This is actually very similar to how a lot of nuclear interactions take place! Ground states, excitation, absorption curves, etc are even the same terminology we will use. It makes sense considering that different parts of the spectrum of light are considered types of radiation, but just thought it was interesting to see the same terminology describing something everyday.

Is it true that if we are using water resistant mineral sunscreen such as pure zinc oxide we do not need to replenish as long as the White cast is intact and holistic?

Only some chemical sunscreens, and only when they're not photostable (specific filters, and if they're not adequately stabilised by other ingredients). But uncoated (and some coated) mineral sunscreens can also be photocatalytic.

This is exactly what I was looking for when I wanted to know how sunscreens worked! I am wondering why the US uses some kinds of filters (avobenzone, homosalate, octinoxate) a lot more compared to Asian sunscreens where Tinosorb S and M are used? My favorite sunscreen has tinosorb and the first time I looked up the ingredients was also the first time I had heard of those filters. Does it have to do with the FDA?

And how do you know how often you should reapply in order not to waste it (I find this relevant because were I live, most worthy skincare can't be afforded by everyone, many brands that are affordable in the other countries, here are branded as "luxury brands").

Thank you! I do actually teach chemistry classes once a week at a specialised tutoring college (pre-lockdown anyway haha) and I used to be head of chemistry there so I designed the syllabus and wrote the teaching textbook 😊

Why do some sunscreens turn white on the skin after a while?

It won't be even, so there's a good chance there won't be enough sunscreen in some spots!

Side question: I recently read your blog article "does visible light cause skin damage". Since visible light can also damage skin and cause pigmentation issues (e.g. blue light, purple light), does it mean that LED masks are not actually good for skin (as they have been marketed), especially for people of skin of color? E.g. blue led mask helping kill acne bacteria but actually damages skin in the process, purple light, and other colors that may be doing nothing beneficial for the skin?

It really depends on each individual situation - acne also causes inflammation, so the benefits can outweigh the risks!

Also sunscreen say u need to reapply every 2h. Until the 2h do we get the 50+/30+/etc? Or does it decrease already throughout those 2h? And what happens to its strengh after 2h? Does it stop working in protecting ur skin in 10min? Or 30min? Or what?😅♥️

I think I have to watch it few times jeje there is a lot of information)) thank you Can you do a video about filters in sunscreens? Why some companies use just few filters and others more? What is more complicated to develop formula for chemicals or physical sunscreen? Do spray bottle sunscreens use same filters? Are they good? Thank you thank you thank you!

Thank u for this amazing explanation! Idk if I'm not clicking in correctly, does it means that more noticeable white cast --> more scattering, more protection? Then why do we seek for non white cast mineral sunscreens?😀 Does that mean whitecast protects us more from UVA and the non white cast mineral sunscreens protect us from UVB?
