How inside No. 9 isn't more popular I'll never know. I genuinely think it's the best writing and acting I've ever seen. The song they wrote for BCDR is unbelievable!
the ending of cold comfort gets me every damn time. it starts off really slow but i have to keep rewatching the ending because that one line george says makes my heart absolutely drop and the timing of the credits is perfect
5. The riddle of the sphinx. I agree it's the cleverest, most dark, disturbing episode. 4. La couchette. The mixture of warm and dark with some great actors makes it brilliant. 3. The 12 days of Christine. Great story. Sheridan outstanding. Twist so emotional 2. A quiet night in. Unique, funny and i love how you know what is going on but you also don't. 1. Bernie Clinton's dressing room. Emotional, great acting, still comic. For me it's better drama than christine because of the emphasis on it being between 2 people: the writers, i adore the two of them.
100%on the number 2 spot, and not just because we’re marching on together ,it absolutely killed me when he calls him out on the alcoholism-amazing acting.
I wanna thank you, Wingy, for introducing me to this show months ago, I think I agree with you on how Inside No. 9 is potentially better than Black Mirror, simply due for the show’s willingness to change styles, no two episodes are alike. I think my favourite episode might be Private View, even though the twist isn’t really too great in my opinion. I hope Pemberton and Shearsmith continue surprising us for a long time, I love their passion for horror.
“Twelve Days of Christine” was the first “Inside No. 9” episode I saw. Absolutely agree with iit as the top pick. So didn’t see the twist. But there are so many clues on rewatching, which makes it so brilliant. Only knowing the outcome do you spot the signposts. :)
Great list Wingy! Brilliant shout on 'The Devil of Christmas' and I think my #1 and #3 would be the same as yours too. 'The Twelve Days of Christine' is probably the only episode in the first two series that really blew me away, and I think they've never quite topped it since. I enjoyed 'Bernie Clifton's Dressing Room' but probably not enough to include it in a personal top 5. Reckon I'd swap out that and 'Cold Comfort' for 'And the Winner Is... ' and 'Private View' respectively. But that ranking could easily change another day depending on what type of episode I'm in the mood for. The sheer variety is one of the awesome things about the show.
All these choices are really good and I agree, 12 days of Christine is a real heart wrenched! personally I think all the episodes are incredible because each one is different every time, I love Empty Orchestra! A lot of people didn’t like it because they felt it wasn’t dark and gruesome which is typical of no 9 but as I said each one is different and this one leans more towards the genre of a musical however I think it’s so much more than just actors singing songs, the song choices are so clever and relevant, the characters are all individually great and the way they utilise lyrics accompanied by camera angles and different shots is so intricate and clearly well through out. I think it’s most likely my favourite because in my opinion, it’s the most realistic/relatable episode with realistic/everyday characters, I would really love to recreate this episode as a short film or on stage performance! And I also haven’t stopped listening to/singing Don’t You Want Me by the human league!! One of my personal favourites, along with Nana’s party which is also so cleverly done and is funny and emotional in places, Tom and Gerri and To Have and to Hold. Inside no 9 is one of the best British tv series I have seen and I would definitely recommend watching!
Thanks for yet again saluting this remarkable show. It says a lot about the quality that there can be such a debate about favourite episodes. Really good choices . Not going to rank episodes as they all have something to offer and are all labours of love but the episodes I keep coming back to most are 'Sardines', 'A quiet night in', 'Diddle diddle Dumpling ' (just heartbreaking) and the astonishing live episode 'Deadline'. Also love 'Empty Orchestra' which is very unusual for the show in just being a sweet half hours comedy and 'Trial of Eizabeth Gadge'. However as I may have said on your previous video ' Bernie Clifton's Dressing Room' is one of my most beloved half hours of TV ever as it has helped me through a year of great change and a couple of bereavements . I am just so grateful to Reece Shearsmith and Steve Pemberton for their commitment to this show and thank you again for saluting it
I just watched 12 days again but this time with the Reece and Steve commentary, although I was listening to them talk about it rather than being fully engrossed in the episode I still was balling crying at the end, another comment is right, on a re-watch there are millions of clues as to what's happening but you don't see any of them on the first watch, I'd have to be somewhat boring and have it as my number 1 also. I loved every episode, I will painfully tho break down my top 5: 5. Have and to hold. A regular drama until the final third and BANG 4. Quiet Night In. So intelligent, a hark back to the silent era and the ending blew me away lol 3. Thinking Out Loud. Loved the talking heads aspect and the reveal towards the end really pulled it together for me. 2. Bernie Clifton's Dressing Room. The best use of the acting talents of Steve and Reece, great humour, lot's of emotion, wonderful reveal. 1. !2 Days of Christine. As stated by you and many others, possibly the best half hour of television ever made, i MEAN THAT.
I mean 12 days of christie is phenomenal but i think many anime and bojack horseman eps are better. Even in inside no. 9 i prefer cold comfort and riddle of the sphinx
Graeme Harper who directed devil of Christmas and Bernie Clifton’s (my two favourite episodes) also directed some of the best doctor who stories including caves of androzani
Picking a top five is soooo hard.... I think mine is 1) dead line, 2) a quiet night in, 3) 12 days of christine, 4) zanzibar, 5) riddle of the sphinx. but i also loved sardines, cold comfort, la couchette, bernie clifton's dressing room, devil of christmas, once removed... i could go on. every episode is genius in its own way.
Yes Yes Yes re 12 Days of Christine. It broke me when I first saw it and still does to this day. It is the greatest television I have ever seen or am likely to do.
I remember the first time I watched 'Inside no 9' was in my english class when my teacher basically said "Hey, wanna see something clever?", and put on 'Dead Wire' on iplayer. I'm curious as to what you and the community think about this one, I personally loved it.
My top 5: 1. Diddle diddle dumpling 2. Cold Comfort 3. Tempting fate 4. Bernie cliftons dressing room 5. La couchette I loved every episode though!! For some reason diddle diddle dumpling made me so emotional, i just loved it so much.
Can't wait for season 5. My current top 5 are 5. To have and to hold 4. Diddle Diddle Dumpling 3. Cold comfort 2. The Bill 1. 12 days of Christine (so moving)
My no.1 would be Once Removed......It is a show that quietly comes on, is genius, disappears, and nobody you know watches it......hope the unflagging genius continues next series

After your first vid about Inside No. 9 I ended up bingeing the whole lot in a week 😂 So very much appreciated the recommendation there fella! Top 5 is pretty similar for me though I’d probably swap Cold Comfort for The Harrowing. So many good episodes though!
My Top 9 (see what I did there) 9: The Harrowing 8: And The Winner Is 7: Private View 6: Loves Great Adventure 5: Cold Comfort 4: La Couchette 3: Sardines 2: 12 Days Of Christine 1: Bernie Clifton's Dressing Room
One of the best parts of cold comfort is how George gets away with everything, from the assault to driving Victoria insane and stopping Andy from telling the police. It just shows how controlling he is
The Devil Of Christmas is one of my favorites just for the fact that when you watch it back, you get tiny hints towards the big twist. That, on first viewing, seem to be nothing more than the style of the episode being a 70s era horror flick. Definitely one of the best.
@@Gareth-410 the lines of "it was my choice to make her pregnant, to ramp up the ending. The idea of something inside her..." I'm surprised A Quiet Night in wasn't included I love that episode so much. 12 days of christine I saw once when it first aired and haven't revisited. The rest of the top 5 I cant really argue with though.
Me and my sister are both huge fans of the show. We both agree that your #1 is our least favourite episode. I'm not saying it's predictable but we picked up what the twist was very early on and we watched it seperately. I know my opinion is in the minority amongst fans but I find it interesting how my least favourite is considered the best, it all comes down to opinion though. I completely agree with the rest of your list though, #5 is certainly underrated. I'm not giving away what your picks were in case some people see this comment before they watch/finish the video.

I thought the episode with the shoe where four seasons is played throughout the episode was superior to 12 days.... And had an emotional ending/twist.... But without being too slushy or heavy like 12 days
My top 5! 1. The 12 Days of Christine 2. Cold Comfort 3. The Bill 4. Seance Time 5. Private View I haven't seen series 4 yet (still waiting for it to drop on Netflix) and honestly I'd recommend just skipping over series 1, I had to force myself to sit through it to get to the good episodes.
riddle of the sphinx confused me tbh. aside from all the shocking things that happen i think the background was a bit muddled. i’m still not sure what all the character’s intentions were and the backstory with the wife confused me. crosswords definitely clever though and a lot of effort must’ve gone into it.
I watched Diddle Diddle Dumpling the other week. Honestly, this is probably my favourite. Shearsmith is excellent in it and his performance is really what sells that episode. But I love how ambiguos the ending is and what is implied in the ending and what I took away from it is probably the darkest thing in Inside No.9.
My least favourite (I say the least favourite and not worst because it's Inside No.9) is a quiet night in. It's creative how no one talks (until the end) and it's quite funny but the twist isn't that satisfying, it was unexpected but not satisfying.

Interestingly Bernie Clifton's Dressing Room, your number 2 is my least favourite of all the episodes. I'm more of a comedy fan than a drama fan and didn't find it appealed to my taste in TV, although I do appreciate how good the writing was. 12 Days Of Christine is good but not in my top 5, again for similar reasons.
