LA River Flyover, from Van Nuys to Long Beach. My helicopter flyovers videos of California have inspired lots of flyover requests. One interesting request came from a documentary filmmaker who asked if I would be willing to shoot footage along the length of the LA River. I agreed but wasn’t sure the journey would merit a Micah Flies video.
Man, I’m so glad I decided to film the flight. Not only was the LA River’s development from Van Nuys to Long Beach fascinating but we also saw many of the sites viewers have requested. To top off the flight, a plane had to make an emergency landing as I approached Long Beach and I listened to the drama unfold in real-time. It was a flight to remember.
Here's the documentary that requested I fly the LA river.

Again, thank you for the flyover of UCLA, my alma mater. I was raised from ages 3 to 5 in veteran married students housing when by my dad got his BA and MA. When I went to UCLA to earn my BA I pledged a fraternity right across from where the housing used to be (now a parking). The Olympian Rafer Johnson trained on the athletic fields and Arthur Ashe on the tennis courts. You flew over Royce Hall where I met my wife at a concert and the Math building where the first internet message was sent from UCLA to Stanford, a login (which failed). Too many memories! Thanks, again.

When you flew over the section near DTLA with the old style bridges, did you think of the movie “Blue Thunder” that featured a helicopter chase through the river & under the bridges? Talk about dating ourselves. That area also makes me think of the movie “Them”. Talk about old!

Also, as a rail fan and model railroader, I noticed at 17:57, you can see the railroad tracks leading into L.A. Union Station. Southern Pacific use to cross that ( formerly) double tracked bridge to head out from the station towards Pomona and their "Sunset Route" line. Santa Fe use to run along the right hand side of the river...north to Pasadena, and south to Fullerton and Riverside. I would also request a rail line fly along.

From 1:28-to 1:31 you fly right over the first house that I ever lived in!! I have a 1959 plat map specifying how much land that the State of California was going to take, for the construction of the southbound lanes of the new San Diego 405 Freeway. The freeway opened brand new in 1963. I have a picture that my grandmother took of me in 1963 standing along the freeway fence in out backyard. You can see the Roscoe Blvd. exit sign in that picture, along with her handwritten notation on the back. Thank you for taking me back. Hope that you enjoy the factoid that I shared, At that same time, in 1963, my dad had his Cessna 172 parked at the Van Nuys Airport.

That was a fascinating flight. I cant think of another city in the world that has hidden its river away quite so brutally as LA. In the 1930's there was debate about how to deal with the flooding issues in the LA basin. On the one hand it was suggested that conserving broad natural channels in which storm waters could spread would also serve as nature reserves, recreational areas and attractive walkways. On the other there was the proposal to deepen and pave a narrower channel which would flush excess water away quickly and allow industrial and residential development. The large landowners could see the benefits of the latter plan so naturally, starting in 1940, concrete and the destruction of the river ecology, removing the possibility of a green-belt across the flood-plain, was what happened.

I was a teenager in the late sixties, and before legal driving age. I lived about two blocks from said riverbed in Maywood. I rode my motorcycle via the riverbed west from around Slauson, down to the Rio Hondo riverbed and then to a huge lot where they stored giant cement irrigation pipes. There were many dirt bike riders there before they finally shut it down. But the riverbed was my hangout.

There is an access to the LA River where Avenue 19, San Fernando Road, Figuroa, and Riverside Drive converge.
You can drive down into the river and that's where they used to train bus drivers. There were still yellow lines on the bottom of the river. That is where I took my wife to learn to drive back in 1969.

I just popped in to note this. NE of Tujunga and Ventura, been by it a few times since HGTV did that show last year. Fun times.

Found it! The large white covering in the back yard is an indicator that the construction for HGTV’s “A Very Brady Renovation” is in progress.

They completed that reno months ago. That's the 2nd floor addition they built.

This and basic driving videos helped me during quarantine and just plain help by making it feel like I'm going places I want to go without going there. I live just east of the L.A. County border and just love the further west area near the beaches for the view.

This was very cool, it's amazing that the LA River loops around homes and businesses and go unnoticed for the most part. Today is 01/09/23 and we're having HEAVY rains, I would like to see how this LA river looks right now..but it's probably scary! Flying over Woodley Park, I finally got to see a view of the Japanese Gardens, I've never been there yet.

Spent the past several days binge-watching (quaranstreaming?) nearly all your helicopter videos. Really loving the content, the quality, and the virtual visit of the area I grew up in. Thanks for sharing this amazing channel. Godspeed, my friend.

I enjoyed that very much. Saw some areas where I grew up and played in the river... rode our bikes... moved to northern Calif in 64 when I was 16. Never saw until now where it entered the ocean. Thanks for the tour.

Amazing video, and so glad the emergency landing went well and everyone was ok. But that scream really got me! I held my breath thinking we were going to hear a crash. The L.A. river was great, how long is it? Watching your videos I always feel like I am in the helicopter looking at the view! Thanks so much! Awesome!

I’m glad N216MS landed safely. Keep up the great work. As an aviation enthusiast, I totally live for your aerial videos!

Nice scenic and informative helicopter views of the LA region. Micah enjoys describing places of interest. Even at couple hundred feet above the ground I can easily see how efficient city planners make use of the land to maximize development and seamlessly integrate roadways insuring traffic can flow reasonably.

Very enjoyable video and you are such a personable guy. If I ever got my helicopter license I'd never want to come down! Thanks for a great video. I'm gonna check out your others!

These are AWESOME! Thank you so much for posting. I lived in Los Angeles for 20 years, but am back in Michigan now. I miss it out there terribly! Love seeing the area from the perspective of the air. Sadly you just missed my old apartment complex on Coldwater Canyon in this episode. Started watching your channel when I saw the video you first posted about the lack of LA traffic. I'm awestruck every time you go over the freeway when I see how little traffic there is. Be safe out there and keep them coming. =)
