Nice work Tim, awesome to see the first of many Server tutorials thanks.
Would be great if you could cover pros/cons of published data sources vs extracts, and the impact of embedded credentials on these. Your insight would help figure out best use cases for this kind of decision especially with the recent introduction of the 'data freshness' checks.

I also think this would be a good topic. Also maybe go over how you can publish data sources to the server and maybe best practices for publishing data sources at the server level vs inbeded extract data inside the workbooks.

Helpful. Thanks, TIm! My server admin will appreciate not having to field as many of my permission-related questions now!

I remember when my company first got Tableau server and the first thing I did was set all users to deny lol becuse I thaught I was doing it at the workbook level. Great vid!

Tim. Wonderful job as always. I think you should include some discussion about best practices when it comes to user groups and permissions. (As in avoiding individual user permissions as much as possible). Also covering some common scenarios where one might need to customize the permission templates versus apply out of the box. Personally if I was making a video on tableau server permissions I would first layout a ‘mock’ organization then have fake users defined on server who represent each of the organization roles and responsibilities and in combinations with the site roles. It would be quite a bit of set up ( and probably best modeled after a real life scenario) but would be the best way to explain stuff. Hard topic. Thanks for taking it on. Let me know if I can help!

Theres a lot there sounds more like a course than youtube video. I make these when i have time between being a new dad, full time work as a consultant and also life in general so hard to put aside the time to plan something this organised. 99% of the videos I do are unscripted straight from my head on the basis that theyre helpful so when i get more time will definately consider making more structured content.

@@TableauTim you do an excellent job even given all the hats you wear. I find your content and presentation some of the absolute best on the web. They are down to earth, common language, and that is why they are so impactful. I would love to collaborate on something, me behind the scenes and you the face and voice. Maybe we can make it work someday. In the mean time keep up the great content.

Hi Tim! Thank you for the video. Is there any way to share dashboards with customers? I can’t obviously force customers to buy a viewer license (neither can I pay for it since it would render my business unprofitable) Thank you

Hi Tim, I’d like to see your input on how to use various groups on project level permissions. I have creators, decision makers, and viewers who need to view most of the items within the project level. The ‘decision makers’ also are viewers but would decide what specific views the other “viewer” group would gain access too. Creators should see all including data sources, decision makers should see all views/workbooks, and viewers should see some views.
Hopefully that is a good scenario.
    Best,

I think the issue with this setup is you’ve based it on the roles of the server rather than the business. I’ll rephrase this to make it simpler. Your authors will have access to everything and for them they’ll have a creator server role with a permissions coming from a group called “access all” the group is what gives them access to the content their role defines what they can do once they have access. The next group down is the decision makers, they essentially get put into a group called decision makers who are given access to all content (you still have to allow the access to the data sources specification connections to the data source otherwise they may have access to the view but the data won’t load if they don’t have access to the data) explorer make the most sense for decisions makers so they can be project leaders and define permissions themselves if they’ve had training. The remaining group I’ll call “users” they get access to specific content and that it. Their viewer status allows them to just view content.
So in summary you want groups to control access and roles (creator viewer explorer ) to control the behaviour of what people do once they have content. Hope that helps

Hi Tim, I have given all required permissions to a certain group in my Organization. The workbook link opens for them but the data does not load. Can you give a fix on this. We are working in the same region India. I also tried copying permissions from another Group and matched it, yet it doesn't load the data.

    • @TableauTim
      @TableauTim  ปีที่แล้ว

Sounds like a data source issue rather than a permissions issue. You role shoot the data source using the trouble shooting workflow of a data source. Remove filters, (data source, extract and workbook) one by one until you find the root cause.

@TableauTim, how come your name appears both as a site Admin and a viewer? Did you use the same credentials to apply the permission. What the best advice would you give to test these permissions? Thanks for the informative vids. I'm looking fwd to part two. Unrelated though, how do you customize the logo in Tableau Online?

    • @TableauTim

I have two accounts with my name on it. Different emails. I have a whole video on permissions and testing and how they work. Customise logo on site settings just google it very easy setting to find. 👍🏾
