I think the first questioner could have been a lot more clear about his question, by just asking "how can spiritually be brought to those who have daily physical and economic needs to look after?" Or something along those lines.
I'd like to add my two cents worth to the issue raised. 1. In my view, the difference between India and the rest of the world is that India is a historically spiritual country and still is, despite going into a materialistic tail spin. Other countries are evolving towards spirituality at different speeds. It's not too difficult to see this. Per capita, India has the greatest number of mystics, occultists, and spiritual aspirants of many different traditions. But I believe that Nature is now distributing spirituality more equitably across the world. Everybody knows about yoga and yogis, even the bushmen or the aborigine living in the forest. It won't be long before the spiritual wave knocks on every door awakening the masses. 2. The difference between spirituality and materialism is non-existent in reality. It's just being used for convenience. Spirituality is an attitude. If you apply a spiritual attitude to running, eating, working or to any other activity or object, that is spirituality in essence. 3. Science and the best minds in science are slowly coming around to close the gap between science and spirituality. Now, the latest hypothesis is that the vast physical universe looks more like a thought or a hologram. That was always the view of Indian spirituality, both of the Vedic and Tantric traditions.
1. I think the materialisic tail spin is mainly because of convenience as you stated in your comment. We have better standards and modern tools which people in ancient times didn't have. Same with our infrastructure and other features of modern society. So I think it's more about people being less poor rather than more materialistic. And yes I agreee, people all over the world are trying to find a spiritual connection. It's needed. I see so many kids who are confused, depressed and without direction/purpose. 2. I fully agree. 3. Yes, it's quite fascinating how a completely materialistic approach to reality such as science still predict something similar to that of spiritual teachings.
Can't say about others but the 3rd point, whole Bigbang theory, Origin of time is Metaphysical, just an idea for today's science. Very much similar to what ancient Indian Vedic, Maharshis propagated in the form of Rituals and Astrology
