  • In the wake of the passing of the esteemed chief Nana Ampadu Okyere II in Kwahu Pepease, a profound chieftaincy dispute has unfolded, spanning a staggering nine-year period. Join us as we unravel the intricate tale of conflicting claims and complex lineage divisions that have gripped the Kwahu community.
Nana Oforiwaa Pokua II, the Kwahu Pepeasehemaa and Kyidomhemaa of Kwahu, stepped into the heart of the dispute by challenging the legitimacy of Mr. Kwaku Bonsu's enstoolment as the chief of Pepease. She asserted that he lacked the royal lineage required from the Santaase Bretuo lineage, thus casting doubt on his eligibility to hold the revered position of chief.
Central to the turmoil is the Bretuo clan in Pepease, which revealed an internal division with distinct stools for its segments. Nana Oforiwaa Pokua II's assertion, backed by tradition, contends that the division necessitates separate leaders. On the other hand, the Kwahu Traditional Council favored a different interpretation, concluding in a 2-1 score in favor of Mr. Kwaku Bonsu, claiming that any member of the Bretuo clan can rightfully ascend the chieftaincy throne.
The journey for resolution led Nana Oforiwaa Pokua II to the Regional House of Chiefs in Koforidua, where a disappointing 3-0 outcome did not deter her pursuit. The narrative took a compelling twist at the National House of Chiefs in Kumasi, where a five-member committee's unanimous vote favored Nana Oforiwaa Pokua II's perspective. The committee advocated for a fresh beginning, rooted in tradition and custom, demanding that the dispute's slate be wiped clean.
However, as the resolution progresses, a lingering misunderstanding looms, stemming from differing interpretations of the committee's judgment. We invite you to share your thoughts in the comments below and engage in this riveting discourse. If you're interested in delving deeper into the details, you can drop your email to receive a soft copy of the judgment, facilitating a collaborative exploration of this captivating saga.
