  • Over the past several years, solo jazz guitarist Martin Taylor, has basically become one of the gang here at KNKX. He's such good company and such a brilliant guitarist that we invite him into our studios for a session almost every time he comes to town.

Having read some of these comments, it’s important to understand this piece in context.
    This is a showpiece
It’s a showpiece…he’s showing off his walking bass chops whilst playing/improvising over the top…at breakneck speed
He’s not going for maximum musical content, just fireworks 💥
I’ve seen Martin live and believe me, he can swing with the best of them!

An outrageously good and musical guitarist, and a really nice down to earth guy. I've only seen him live once, but it was one of the best jazz gigs I have ever had the pleasure to attend. Hope he comes to Norway in the not too distant future. Then again, if he has a gig in Glasgow, Scotland I will need to hop over and see him with my father, for sure!

I purchased Martin's Stepping Stones album shortly after it was released in 2000. I remember hearing this song for the first time and erupting in laughter. It seemed ridiculous and impossible that someone could play this. I saw him perform a few years later and witnessed first hand that it is possible but still ridiculous. I still laugh every time I hear it.

Obviously he couldn't play that straight off. A hell of a lot of thought and work went into working out the melody and bass lines. He'll have picked up the "tools" over the years, to allow him the facility to do it. He'd have started off playing it slowly, and then it's hard practice to perfect it and up to speed.

I don't think so, I got a new Peerless Martin Taylor Maestro a few years ago and assuming they strung it with what he uses, I believe they were D'Addario XL .011-.050 nickel/steel round wounds. At least that's what I replaced them with & it felt the same. I want to try some more beef on the bottom, there are Slinkies .011-.054 I have that I want to try on it next.
Great sounding & playing ax, needed nothing out of the box.

For those of you who say it doesn't swing 1. why does it have to? Are you trying to dance to it. You should use a big band or combo or something this is virtuoso guitar playing. 2. He used to be Stephan Grappelli's guitarist the guy who along with Django invented swing.

Ok, this man is insane. But I have to believe every single riff is just him practicing... On stage!
This being said, it's awesome chord techniques, tons of counter point. It just seems extremely repetitive and gets a little out of whack a few times.
Randall Dollahon from Miami U. was similar. Genius thought process. Any melody, multiple choruses of amazing chord melodies. I
Saw him do Oh Danny Boy once and he played about 25 choruses sweet as can be, always fresh ideas. Bebop tempos of 200 plus are a bit silly in any context. 💊
