In case you don't know Ian writes and produces his own music. Also directs and edits his own videos. He can play bass, keyboard and the drums plus even dances as you can see. The man can do anything! Ian is making a storyline based on his experience with bipolar disorder type I and DID (Dissociative Identity Disorder) and I'll try to explain it here if you want to know: There's three main characters till now: Mito, Mr Insanity and the Hybrid. His first 2 albums focused on Mito while his most recent one focused on Mr Insanity and that's why they're so distinct. He said his next album that is coming up in the next 1-2 months is going to focus on the Hybrid. He delayed the release to he could make a bigger project. I won't explain the Hybrid here since he isn't the focus now. They aren't just "characters", he didn't just wake up one day and decided to create them. They are real people that have a mind of their own (called "alters", short for alternate state of consciousness) and that Ian coexists with. In DID there's more than one person living in the same body with different memories, voice tone, body language etc. DID stems from severe and/or repeated early childhood trauma (typically before 6 years old) and the child fragments the mind so the "new person" can deal with the trauma and not the child otherwise it would be unbearable. That way the child's mind can't fully integrate into one whole identity and instead it becomes multiple. Ian calls "The Other Side" the place where the whole story unfolds which actually represents his consciousness, where these alters exist. Mito is the "protector alter" since he was created by the mind to deal with any trauma and to be the one who remembers them so Ian can forget it. He is represented in MVs by wearing black, missing an eye because of white contact lenses and wearing an eyeball ring. Ian has trouble looking at himself properly on the mirror and he always closes one eye, which probably inspired the fact that Mito is represented through having only one eye. That's because due to the multiple identities he has a hard time processing who he is. Ian is the proeminent identity, the one who stays the longest in the body (called the "host"). In very stressful situations Ian blacks out and Mito takes control of the mind in order to protect him (he's the one "fronting" ps. there's also cofronting meaning more than one alter in control at the same time ) Ian then will come back hours, days, weeks later (the longest that it has been was a month) not remembering anything that was said or done. Basically his life has been lived and he doesn't know how. Mr Insanity is the manic highs. He is shown with colorful attire/clowny make up and butterfly is his symbol. He is the protagonist of all the MVs for the Dear Insanity era (the order being Don't Go Insane ==> Don't Go Insane teaser ==> So I Danced ==> Peanut Butter & Tears - Ian released these videos in reverse. He didn't confirm the placement of Peanut Butter & Tears but if everything else was in reverse it seems logical to place it last) The MVs for the 'Dear Insanity' era are all connected. Since Mr Insanity is his manic highs he's usually chaotic and doesn't care about consequences. In the story there's a door that Mr Insanity's chaotic self is trying to open which represents the traumas and Mito being the protector won't let this happen since Ian isn't supposed to know anything about it. In real life Mr Insanity and Mito are always fighting and also Ian until now doesn't know what trauma is the root of his DID, only Mito does. Ian said that 6/7 days a week he lucid dreams and in those dreams there are a lot of doors. Going through the wrong door would turn the dream into a nightmare and that's what inspired the "door" analogy. Sometimes he dreams as Mito, sometimes as himself. When he dreams as Mito, it's almost like Ian is intruding on Mito's dream, like a spectator. In Don't Go Insane we go through the journey of Mr Insanity to The Other Side as he slowly turns into madness simultaneously going after the key that unlocks the door/trauma. He is met by pink villagers which are essentially Mito's minions trying to stop him (notice how they have only one eye like Mito) and Mito is represented by the black smoke. Mr Insanity repeatedly says to himself "I'm sane" and even so still loses grip on reality. Ian said in the story the most advanced version of Mr Insanity, when he succumbs to madness, is completely blind because he no longer needs to see. In my interpretation this is probably why at the end of the song right before the bridge he says "Can't see...". About the Green guy, It isn't known yet his role in all that, just that he is Mr Insanity's sidekick. Anyway if you managed to read all of this (lol) I recommend for you to watch the MVs I mentioned above, the Miito Movie (Seraph+1Shot+Mood+Ribbon) which is a medley of 4 songs and Skins demo (this last one was made entirely by Mito as a letter to Ian about how it feels to hold their traumas, Ian has no memory of making it).
