In this how-to Knife Making video Dan Berg from BergKnifemaking.com demonstrates how to use a belt grinder to grind rough bevels. In this video we will work on using a Tilt Table bevel grinding jig for rough grinding the bevels on three current works in progress. Rough bevels are done with a corse grit belt either a 60 or a 36 grit. In the next video Dan will work on cleaning up the post heat treat blades and adding handles.

Not as easy at looks for sure. I had to build a jig to help me even both sides out and keep the same angle

you sure make it look easy and fast. takes me about ten times as long. i like forging a lot better but was trying my hand at stock removal. have to get one of those tilt tables i think

Just finished your book, Introduction to Knife Making. I thought it is well written with an understandable flow from start to finish. I'm not getting a 72 inch'er yet because I don't know whether I want to just make knives for family and friends or sell some. at-any-rate, thank you for sharing your vast knowledge and obvious wealth of experience with a grateful newbie....

Naturally I am having trouble grinding my bevels. Can someone tell me if you’re supposed to grind to the edge scribe lines first and then work the grind line up the blade or it gets done at the same time? I keep overshooting my grind mark on the upper part of the blade.
Great video! What angle on the table do you use for your flat grinds?
Every knife is different. It depends on how much of a bevel width I want showing. I usually grind a test bevel on a pc of wood and then make adjustments until Im happy with the bevel width.
If you lift your hand towords you will at the tip it will do the same as moveing your knife around the tip

I literally only have a hand file to make the bevel for my knife.
How about a cheap disc grinder and flap sanding wheel. I have made an entire knife with one. Except for drilling the pin holes. Harbor Freight has them cheap
What angle do you set your tilt table at? I did some smaller ones on mine at 82.5° and they came out ok . But they were 1/8 inch thick blades . I need to do a 3/16 inch blank here soon and I wasn't sure if I should change the angle or not
It really depends on how wide you want the bevel and thickness of the steel. I just mark the edge of a pc of scrap wood at same center distance as steel. Then adjust till you get the bevel width you want.
I assume bevels make your knife sharper in the end?
Nice tutorial. Is your belt moving top to bottom? Im told this can catch the edge of the knife and cut into the belt. Seems to work jus fine here though.
Most 2x72 grinders belt moves from top to bottom and the majority of bevel grinding is done bevel up. You do have to be a little careful but it gives the maker the ability to see bevel thickness and plunge line starting point.
Do y’all make that tilt table for a 2x 42 grind? Or is it just available for the 2x 72 ?
You could adapt it for a 2x24. You would have to mount a short pc of 2 inch square tube. Drill and tap two holes and use it as the mount for tooling arm

Just a bucket of water to cool it down. Otherwise I would burn my fingers!!

How thin do you grind that tilt table with an angle grinder to fit closer to the belt? I seem to have a hard time getting mine squared up. One side will be great. The other not so great.
About the thickness of a nickel. Send me a photo of your set up and resulting bevels. Will try to trouble shoot
What is the distance between the railroad track lines and does it vary based on spine thickness or material type of the knife. Any help would be greatly appreciated. I'm a novice who makes drop point skinners and edc from 1084. 1/8" thickness.
I usually set them by eye about the thickness of a dime.

Was kind of hoping to see bevel grinding by hand, on a belt without a special tilt table. . They look good though
Can only show you the way I do it. I tried freehand grinding got pretty good in one direction but never the other. Tilt Table makes it easy and still allows complete control
A lot of people who produce hand made knives use a jig or some way of keeping the angle set. Another knife maker made a video about it. He said that he found out that literally about 90% of knife makers, that he knows, use jigs for when they make an actual production run of hand made knives.

Sorry I have no idea. I do everything by eye. I find the angle that gives be the desired bevel width

Can you do a full flat grind with the tilt table? I have not seen you go that far with this table.

All good but this is just a advert for your product you could have at least use a free hand or jig without your contraption just found your videos by the way and some good content
Im currently grinding the bevels on my first knives ever made I have 2 blanks cut and shaped I have a jig and will use this method , its scary because you can ruin the knife in seconds and all the work that goes into it.
