When I was about 9 or 10, waiting for the Chelmsford connection on Shenfield station...the highlight of the day was waiting for, and finally seeing one of these Monsters thundering through the station, only inches from safety of the platform’s. I would listen for the sound of it’s whistle and then it would appear from around the bend, that unique growl and volcanoes of smoke rocketing out it’s roof as the driver would push a few more horsepower from the warship size engine. Standing far back from the edge I would watch it approach; stare in wonder as roared past me, swivel on my heels to watch it disappear on it’s Norwich bound journey, straining my ears to the last distant thunder rolling off into the countryside, some times coming back on the wind for one last time. What a train What I would not have done, was stare pointlessly up the way it had just come as it rumbled off behind me…………… So why, for goodness sake, WHY do camera operators not pan with the object of interest….Is there some esoteric or trade cameramans reason for planting on a tripod, pressing record, and retiring?????????????????
These locomotives never worked out of Liverpool Street and into East Anglia as far as I am aware. I suspect you are referring to the English Electric class 37, which were a mainstay on that route during the 1960’s and ‘70’s.
These engines are no longer produced and the few of these Deltics are kept working for nostalgic purposes. You obviously aren't hear for the nostalgia of these incredible machines but you should look into them if you're an old gear head like me because the physics behind the engine is incredible. Search "Napier Deltic".
Amazing engines, best looking non steam trains ever, especially the blue and yellow British Rail colour, always loved these big beasts, and the beautiful ic 125 of course 👍
And there was daft old me thinking that the sound of a Merlin Spitfire or a Vulcan bomber passing overhead was the ultimate audio experience - that was until I heard a Deltic! A pure unadulterated ' audio 'orgasm'
There is a great deal of nostalgia for steam in the design of the first British diesel locomotives: diesel, it seems, but the smoke comes out of the chimney like a steam engine.
Imagine if all TOCs used 55s on their services😮how noisy would it be on the railway...Loud and wonderful! The Spitfires of the rails...🤔could be Lancaster's maybe
@@jaydowling213 It's ironic that these early diesels were supposed to be less polluting than steam. They could have been a lot cleaner but it seems nobody bothered.
Love it, I used to watch the Deltics come through Thirsk in 80/81 when my family moved there. I guess these are now owned by rail preservation groups? It appears they carry out freight tasks, presumably to generate funds to keep going.
Thanks! In this case with 55022 it wasn't hired by GB Railfreight which did help benefit the locomotive, it went through a repaint and bodywork repairs during the time it was out on hire
Hellfire! That's some of the best audio I've heard - amazing stuff.. but, humour me, I've been out of the loop for years - wtf are Deltics doing running freight and regular passenger services in the 2010's?..
A mighty powerful beast at all 5000hp I love them and would love to see all 6 of them all together at some diesel gala next year that's if we still ain't on lockdown!!!😎
Its typically only when starting off that they smoke badly because 2 stroke oil gets stuck in the exhaust when idling which is then blasted out when they power up
Because this loco was on full power and has burnt off all the oil that has accumulated in the exhaust collector drum.Being a two stroke engine it’s more noticeable after the engine has been idling for a while or just been started up
I went on one of those Deltics at Bury the ELR just before Covid struck, the amount of smoke coming out of that thing was a disgrace, some of the windows were open on the coach’s and we couldn’t breathe because of the amount of fumes coming from the locomotive, the engine must have been absolutely knackered to smoke like that but it seems to be a problem with some of them as it’s seems to be a problem with some of these locomotives,it’s either oil smoke or unburnt fuel because the injection timing is miles out,if it’s oil it’s burning it must be pouring in either because of wear or through the turbo seals,I can’t believe they are allowed to be operated in this condition when they kick up all the the fuss about diesel vehicles,if it was a truck it would be banned from the road immediately until it was repaired to a reasonable standard, again it’s one law for one and another for others.
It's a supercharged 2 stroke diesel so it's going to burn oil with the fuel ,heck my chainsaw chuffs out way more smoke than some of these ,that said I'm not even going to mention the lawnmower that takes about half hour to start and makes vegans and environmental activists cry and superglue themselves to my fence lol
@@czeslawmeyer7871 There’s a world of difference between a 2stroke Petrol and a 2stroke diesel,on a Petrol engine the oil is mixed with the fuel to lubricate the crankshaft and bearings as well as the bore and piston, this is NOT the case with diesel, lubrication is taken care of by an oil pump in the sump which lubricates everything including the valve gear which is NON existent on a petrol engine as there are no valves, every Deltic I’ve ever seen emits clouds of blue choking smoke which smells like unburnt fuel but they are a brilliant performer as most 2stroke diesel’s do..
@David Ellis I agree with you 100%. The diesel engine in this class of locomotive is grossly inefficient, not to mention environmentally harmful. You're a very brave man to point that out here!
@@chrisbungostudios Thanks for your reply,I been a heavy diesel fitter all my life and it saddens me that diesel gets such bad press when there’s been so much done to them to clean up exhaust emissions in the last few years, people see these engines and come to the conclusion that all diesels are the same when nothing could be further from the truth. I have a late BMW diesel and on start up from cold there is NO SMOKE or smell of diesel from the tailpipe whatsoever and it’s done over 126,000 miles, whenever I see these Deltics they belch blue smoke out which smells like unburnt fuel.
1:50 e.a.: I can't help thinking that this engine is burning water somewhere. This clag is surely not normal, and it looks more like steam than like diesel smoke. Of course, the sound is awesome, unique. But to my eye, this engine needs repair. Pity!
@@GJ37425 Now, this is good news indeed! I hope she'll get back into service soon! I very much like these locos. Just the sound, it's so .... urging, unleashed, just unique. Together with the class 43 HST, they represent the summit of diesel traction in Britain, if not worldwide.
If there is anything more glorious than listening to a Deltic going from notch 1 to notch 8 I am not aware of it
Fabulous sound and it's so unique. The equivalent of a spitfire on rails.
......or a Vulcan!
Brilliant footage of the deltics. Old workhorses that they are. I love their sound. It’s so unique.
Thanks!

Fabulously footage of the Deltic - the clag! But oh the wonderful sound! Awesome 👌
Thank You!
Fabulous! The 55 is the best British loco eve built.
And the whole industry has been destroyed.
They had an absolute unique sound but so do many diesels.
To me at least they are the best sounding diesel loco.
Deltic Music 😍😍😍😍😍
Absolute truth there
I miss seeing the Deltics. They just oozed power.
Wow, these locomotives smoke as if they’re a steam engine
Too much pollution generated to be allowed if only just introduced!

Nothing better than the sound of these roaring babies... Epic!
That engine noise is very like the early detroit v series motors that were affectionately known as "screamin' jimmies'
Awesome sound. Unique locations. Interesting angles. Doesn't get better than that.
Thanks!
Deltic D9009 Alycidon is beautiful!
Great footage and I love it when firing on all 36 cylinders!

My all-time favourite locomotive. Excellent video!
Weird to see them hauling heritage and modern stock alike. Shows how useful these legendary machines still are.
Great machine, the sound of the engine spinning is amazing. it smelled like diesel from the monitor.
what an amazing engine sound, ive lived in north america and the diesels sound awsome but the deltic is so unique and awsome
Ooh that English Electric growl just does it for me....more thrash ooh 8:09😜

Nice signal box at 08:00, classic shot with the Deltic. Although I love the sound the clag makes me grateful I never lived near a station.
Could they be any dirtier!

i just love the 2 tone horn, I want to get a pair for my monster!
I live here in texas too!
Mesmerizing!!!
I want to hear a Deltic having a dirty thrash all the way up the Lickey Incline!
55007 was Pinza.
They should have made more than 22...these lancers had *potential!*

Fantastic video 👍👍👍👍👍

So it that then, just 6 exist these days?
7, one is preserved
It seems like some of them are not running on all cylinders though. There is a lot of unburned Diesel in the exhaust
It's not the Vulcan 'howl' but it's up there.
More smoke than an old ALCO!
I have rarely seen a large diesel engine that produces such dirty blue or yellow exhaust fumes.
It's just a shame you rarely see and hear them with both engines running while moving off...
What do these things need horns for?
In case you don’t hear them coming 🤣 🤣
May I ask what vantage point you viewed Waverlety Station from in the very last scene?
Was taken at the top of the Jacob's Ladder steps just past the end east of the station
I believe the Halycidon is the best of the Deltics. The mechanics would disagree with me tho! Lol
That’s what CVT sounds like !!
why no panning???????????????????/
Wow, 2.40,not a trace of smoke from that locomotive, so why are some of the others so bad?

@ScottieD53 Inverted pistons fill up with oil,you get excess oil on cylinder walls+ end up in combustion space.

I think if you see two sources of white smoke then both engines are being used.

The 55 class is not for celtic fans either.
