I purchased the Apex vs Anterro end of last year from their Vail rep and loved them as a former snowboarder…until Day 4. A buckle broke. Spoke to Gunner and said that rarely happens. Later that day the bottom of mid buckle completely fell off. He was mortified and sent me new buckles. I snagged an old Lange buckle from my buddy as a bandaid fix for that day. Next day at the head wall on Aspen Highlands I was skiing wierd on my left ski. I looked and Another mid buckle broke off and the top strap was gone. I was only strapped in by the bottom buckle. Scary. What would have happened if that buckle failed. I had to ski leaning back on my heal just to get down. I have been skiing 48 years and never been so freaked out. Lizzie said they would replace the chassis as this was not normal. After an entire week of emailing them their COO put the kabash on that and would only replace the parts. I did get new buckles and I can tell you they do not feel tight. This after 5 days of skiing. They say it’s not their policy to refund once they have been skied on. But this is a defective product. I loved the product but why should I be skiing at risk. The manufacturing is clearly defective (the bought 1000 replacement buckles for this issue) and the design is clearly flawed (how do straps just come off?). DO NOT BUY. I was patient and love the idea but no longer. SAFETY HAZARD

I actually Ski and Snowboard. It can be hit or miss when using the Apex Ski boots as Snowboard boots. The problem with the Apex Antero (Green Color) Ski boot is that the bottom boa noob get in the way of most Snowboard bindings since the ankle strap sits around the area of the bottom boa noob. I was able to use the Apex boots on a pair of "System MTN" rear entry Snowboard bindings, but it wasn't quite a good fit. I was able to use the boots with the System MTN binding but I wouldn't recommend using the Apex boots as a Snowboard boot mainly because the ankle binding won't sit against the boot as it should. Lastly, I think the Apex boots appear to be a litte more narrow in shape as compared to the most Snowboard boots since this could be a problem with using them with Snowboard bindings. I eventually gave up on using the Apex boots as Snowboard boots. I eventually opted to buy Burton Step On bindings and boots. It still means I carry two sets of boots, a pair of skis and a snowboard with me, but that's the price I pay for loving to ski and board. :) Hope this helps.
I have snowboarded in the boots many times, And have never had a problem with snowboard bindings (although you could). I get the opportunity to go to on the mountain demo days and love being able to switch back and forth between skis and snowboards all while staying in my Apex boots. I do not usually snowboard in my apex boot though because it is a little higher cuffed and a bit stiffer (which is great when I want to go fast on my board) but I like a softer flexing boot most of the time when I snowboard. The apex boot flexes much like a RIDE insano snowboard boot for reference.
I use to Ski and work in Ski Shops a long time ago in the 80’s, and when we had male customers who had really big calves and had problems finding boots to fit their calves, we would always suggest they try a woman’s boot and many of them did get them, as women naturally have bigger calves that flair out earlier than men’s. As for pressure points, we used to use metal tools that push out at the points and heat the area up to stretch it permanently, or sell Dynamic foam injection Ski boots. I sure technology has moved on now.
The boots are amazing! The best I've ever used. I'm not a hard or expert skier, but these seem to be built for more than my capability. I'm trying to mount my bindings on skis in a way that will accommodate my foot angle better. With that, I think I should have a perfect combo!
The Nordica NR990 boot had a cable system, and it was the best boot I've ever had. I'd pay almost any price to get a new pair. I used mine for 20+ years till the plastic literally broke.
I’m eagerly waiting for snow and then I’m heading out to the local ski places which are pretty mild but I’ll be able to tell right away if they are an improvement.
That would never be stiff enough for a racer style skier. When I was racing, I had the same problem you had with big calves and I couldn’t fit most boots; I found the only boots that worked for me were Tecnicas. I also had cork orthotics and I could ski 12 hours per day with no problems. I never developed any bone spurs and was always comfortable. As long as the boot is well fit, it shouldn’t be a problem. I’m sure these will be fine for an intermediate skier; but I can’t begin to think they would work for someone skiing at a high level.
Weight is the killer, also at a much higher ride and very long (340mm for 25.5). They don't fit most of my skis with bindings set up for regular boots.
Fantastic review! Do you know the last(width) on those boot and chassis? I'm looking to get a size 28 as well but not sure if they'll fit since my feet are 120mm wide.
What kind of boots have you tried? I really doubt that there is not a single hardshell boot out there that fits you. I still think these are an interesting idea though
Not gonna lie. These ski boots are life changing. I’m on my 2nd full season with the Apex and I can’t believe I skied for so long without them. Since switching, my feet never hurt, they rarely get cold, and walking in the lodge or to the parking lot is a pleasure! Performance? They’re excellent. They’re incredibly adaptable, with all sorts of tweaking options…on my 92mm wide blizzards, I notice absolutely no difference in performance to traditional boots. If anything I ski better cuz I’m not in pain. On my GS style Stockli Laser SC skis, I’d say you lose a tiny bit of performance vs a race boot. No one should be surprised by that though. The tiny trade off is easily worth the incredible comfort and warmth. Demo these things! I promise, you’ll enjoy. Oh, but can we talk about why the buckles are backwards vs every other boot made?
@@CoreQ That's ridiculous. I'm an advanced skier and love them. Another close buddy of mine was a ski instructor at Jackson for years, and he skis on Apex as well - the dude crushes terrain in a way I could only dream. If you're trying to race world cup, I would NEVER recommend these...they aren't designed for that - but the advanced skiers I know that have them absolutely love them. Also, I've never had a ski boot with as many adjustable features...if you used these and didn't set the forward lean to a more aggressive stance and also replace the stiffness piece (I don't know what they call that but the boot comes with soft, medium, and stiff ones) on the back, you weren't fully experiencing the boot. And if it's not for you, that's ok too...but the Apex boot isn't holding any advanced skiers back.
@@andrewkoss297 I never see anyone in master team uses it. or any of the race coaches ever recommend them. but I would like to give it a try again when i'm not practicing. But there are so many good boots out there and so manny experienced boot fitters out there. I doubt this product gonna be main stream on the market. But I do see one use case for this. back country skiing. this will be really great because you can actually walk up the mountain easier
@@CoreQ this isn’t designed for master team racers etc. this is definitely for normal humans regardless of their skiing ability. They’re remarkably comfortable, warm, and they make going into the lodge so much nicer too. They also ski great.
Does the softness change your ability to carve at all? I’m not a racer but I like to shred pretty fast so I just wanna make sure these won’t interfere w my style too much
From what I've heard, if you're more serious than a complete beginner, you should not get these. My ski boots are a bit looser than a performance fit, and combined with walk mode, they're pretty comfortable when I'm walking around.
I can leg-press a small house )) so can my son - giving these ski boots a try - I am a snowboard instructor and a bunch of my fellow ski instructors ride in these boots. If it’s good for them it’s good enough for me. Fingers crossed! Last boots my son was in turned his feet blue after 2 runs. Wide feet and huge calf = apex ski boots
Dude. I grew up skiing and bailed as I got older because I was sick of how uncomfortable ski boots are. Switched to snowboarding and never looked back. It’s just a much more comfortable and enjoyable experience (also, my thighs don’t burn after a long run like what happens to me when I used to ski). On the other hand, I could just be massively out of shape. :)
I still think a properly trained boot fitter can do a better job at fitting ski boots than a snowboard boot clamped into a glorified highback binding with toe and heel welts... I've personally spent back to back days touring for hours in 4 buckle boots and have no issues, a proper boot fitter will find a brand that fits your foot shape and use punches and insoles to make sure you're comfortable
Ive had multiple pairs of professionally fitted boots over the years for both ski racing and freestyle and I always had trouble with pain no matter how many times I would go back and get things adjusted or even replaced. I bought apex boots 2 years ago and they are a god send, no performance loss at all even for 30+ foot jumps. Go demo one for yourself I promise you will change your mind.
I actually had my boot fitter recommend these, if he couldn’t get the ones I bought to fit. The “comfort” boots are too wide in the heel, everything else is too tight in the instep. Spent all last season getting them dialed in. Wore them all day this season, now just working on fine tuning stance issues, not pain issues.
Not to mention it’s all about power transfer from your boots to the skis. So much of that is gonna be lost from the soft boots to those buckles and straps. And like you said get your boots professionally customized, this guy complains about flat feet, all that can be remedied with a proper boot fitter.
That’s just not true though. I’ve had many pairs of professionally fit boots and they’re just less painful. I wouldn’t call them comfortable by any means. They just don’t cripple you when you take them off like rentals.
Seems would be comfortable but what about performance? if you're used to a 115 stiffness? for jumps, cliff drops, demanding turns. I do question. also if weight is heavier that's not so good for hiking in them
So this looks like they just took basic snowboard boot and binding and meshed it with the ski stuff. I wonder if there are other ski binding adapters for snowboard boots
These look like they might work for me! I have a 20” calf, I bought a pair of Lange XWide boots and I cant even get them on! I am not a hard core skier, I will have to look into these further. Where do you ski?
I’ve skied my local small hills here in the Midwest, but enjoy Vail probably most but have done Tahoe and Mammoth too. I think you might like these too. It’s frustrated me for years that even custom boots never fully did the trick.
@@petervonpanda I am planning a move o Colorado, have purchased land west of Denver. I think Vail, Beaver Creek and Breck will be my favs- epic pass a must! But If I cant get into a boot, I may rethink the whole thing! Losing weight only goes so far, my calves were always big. Looking into lazer lipo, too, but dang that is extreme! Just wish this industry had more to offer! I think my calves are bigger than yours. I prob wont make it out there this year. I may have to contact atomic directly to see where I could try a pair of these.
Hey Peter! I just want to let you know I ordered these boots and tried them on today. Thanks for turning me on to them! I still need to lose about an inch to make them work, but with discipline I can do that by next year’s ski season. Finally some Hope! Thanks again so much!
I feel like I just found a "gigantic Calf Support Group" !! My 19" diameters were impossible to fit. I am going to give these a try. Great un-box video. You have given me hope
Any update in use. Pretty expensive for a mid-level skier who may not live on the mountain. But sure does seem would make those 2, 3 day ski trips a few times a year more enjoyable,
I'll be posting a video pretty soon. I want to try them a few times and get some results on durability. I'll say this so far... they're amazing. I agree that the price seems high, BUT premium ski boots can be even more expensive. And if you start with them early, you can avoid the hundreds of dollars I've spent renting cheap, painful boots. I think in the long run, even for the infrequent skier like me, it's the difference between tolerating and enjoying the sport.
It’s looks just like a snowboard boot with a redesigned binding that fits a ski ! Absolutely fantastic review ! I both ski and snowboard I wonder if the inner boot is transferable to a board binding ! In fact!!! I do not care this product is great iv just ordered a pair ! Hopefully 1boot fits a skis and a snowboards binding because this will absolutely reduces airport baggage fair !! Brilliant review !
I have skied in Aoex boots for 9 years and they work great, depending on where you usually ski you may be able to demo them which I would highly encourage you to. They are game changers, and this years boot is 2lbs lighter.
I swore I commented earlier about a code that gives makes the new model of boots $495 on the apex website, but it seems they were deleted? I guess if your interested in that code maybe reply below and I'll list it again if your interested.
Can't really understand where is the confort... When you are skiing the confort would be the same as a regular boot and if you have to remove your skis and walk for a bit i guess you are not going to remove the plastic armour of the boot from the shoe (cause you already have to bring your skis and poles) so you are going to walk as you would in a normal boot... I can also imagine that, as a whole, its a less rigid system compared to normal boot and therefore you can't ski as hard and as precise and you would in a normal boot.
To every skier out being critical of these boots, you are a total wiener. If these boots are getting more people on the slopes in comfort that’s all that matters. Nobody says you have to buy this boot or it’s the boot for everyone. I ride a Technica Tour Scout and it took probably 10 times on the slopes and 3 different boot fitting sessions before they were comfortable. There are a lot of people who aren’t powering into the shovels on their skis and riding 10/10ths aggressive, they also aren’t marketed as a touring boot. And gear is a fairly small part of the equation, not everyone is a level 4 ski instructor in a 93 Last DOBERMANN WC 150. I rode for years in a 75 flex $300 boot and could still ski circles around 95% of people on the hill.
As far as the buckles go. Why didn't you twist the buckle to get a tighter fit over your foot or fine tune the calf fit? You can fine tune the adjustment by rotating/twisting the clasp to tighten or loosen (makes the buckle longer or shorter) it if you're on the last tooth or just in between teeth. Standard functionality for buckles of that type.
Traditional ski boots hurt because skiers don't know how to fasten them. I have skied for over 60 years ! I skied in the 60's and 70's when boots truly were painful. The key to comfort is: 1) Do NOT buy boots by "ability". Don't buy "expert" boots if you are an expert. They are far too stiff for what recreational skiers need. I lived in Jackson Hole and skied 150 days a year for many years. I am a strong expert (well I was....I'm an old codger now). I always skied an intermediate level boot except when racing. 2) Buy a flexible and comfortable traditional style boot. 3) Fasten them loosely over the top of your foot, and buy FLEXIBLE boots. This is not tough. No gimmicks are needed. I know instructors who used to teach with their boots unbuckled. It works. Try it.
I tried these on today and I'll tell you the adjustability is second to none. First boot that actually fit my feed from all angles perfectly and with some actually comfortable top-to-bottom squeeze near my toes without the sides being squeezed. But I had to walk away and not because they are so ugly with that 1980's moon boot look (I don't really care if they make my feet feel good). But they made my knees point inward and I just couldn't bend correctly with these mounted in skis without my knees hurting. Secondly, they are way too heavy and weight was the other critical factor for me in getting a new boot as I like to do a lot of freestyle. Ultimately, the only standard boot that came close to a perfect fit for me was the K2 BFC line. I tried just about everything else on the market searching high and low for wide lasts. I have a moderately high arch and ankle volume, plus wide feet that are wide further back than most people and also relatively wide at my toes with slightly longer center toes. Plus, the BFC is heat-moldable to make that final adjustment so that's ultimately what I opted for, but I really wanted to love these apexes for that perfect "feeling" fit.
Nice review. Can you also make more adjustments on the outer frame buckle? Looks like there are different mounting holes on the green pivot part of the buckle. Might help you dial in your lower and upper support.
That’s pretty cool lol if you snowboard too you’re set-- well, unless you use step ons… Nice video you really showed everything good and you made me laugh a few times 🥴😅 Peace bro ham calves 🥹✌️
Not worth the cost for any skier - they will actually handicap your control of your skis. While very comfortable, your foot can move around a LOT relative to the outer shell simply because the main boot is not rigid, plus the main boot can move -especially at the toe - relative to the outer shell. Have a pair with the carbon fiber shell, and after a few years of struggling with them, I went back to my older Rossies, and my ski control was immediately massively improved. Damned heavy as well, and the model I had is also not waterproof - my feet got totally soaked on a warm day. Girlfriend also had a pair. Found that she was having the same ski control issue. Bought her a pair of real boots, and her skiing improved immediately. STAY AWAY!!!!!
If you had a carbon shell then it sounds like you had one of the Earliest versions of the Boot system. There have been at least four versions updated and upgraded since then the newest versions have made major improvements over the previous models. For instance this year‘s model is 2 pounds lighter than last year‘s and everything about it has been upgraded. If you get a chance I would encourage you to give the new one a try I think it will change your perspective.
@@ryanallison6774 Thanks but no thanks - I'm back to real ski boots with solid shells and Intuition liners, As an engineer with decades of experience in race car dynamics, and a national level racer 50 years ago ( with a 35 year absence from skiing afterwards), a boot that is a soft shell will allow the foot to move way too much too easily and totally destroy your fine control of your skis. These boots shortcomings are like having slop in the steering rack in you car.
I can see the market, but if you want to ride hard, be it in groomers or touring or whatever, there is no chance these are optimal. If somebody is overweight and can’t fit their calves in a normal boot, yeah, totally. Athletic equipment to help over weight people move into sport until they can use normal/optimal equipment is awesome. But for most skiers, I don’t see these working well. They’re really just glorified snowboard boots and bindings.
Yeah 100% if someome starts using this and doesnt see the issue, it has to be extremely low skill skier who just dont really has controll over skiis anyways.
Wish they made a Telemark NTN/tech chassis with front and rear fittings...and only having to take the frame off would be awesome for touring if you wanted to rest or wait til light...if I can ask, what is your widest calf measurement?
I Skied big couloir at big sky with these boots. You don't have any idea what your talking about. Don't comment on things you don't know. You sound foolish
If you haven’t skied in them then you have no way to know. I’m 220lbs and ski aggressively all over the mountain. (Lived in summit county now in Tahoe). These boots are not race boots but they perform great.
ok basically you showed if you have fat legs these my not work and you showed how they go together, same crap the marketing videos would show I wanted a REVIEW of the product you failed..I wanted you to ACTUALLY USE these things on the slopes..

The boots are amazing! The best I've ever used. I'm not a hard or expert skier, but these seem to be built for more than my capability. I'm trying to mount my bindings on skis in a way that will accommodate my foot angle better. With that, I think I should have a perfect combo!
Great review, thanks alot
The Nordica NR990 boot had a cable system, and it was the best boot I've ever had. I'd pay almost any price to get a new pair. I used mine for 20+ years till the plastic literally broke.
We are the same ! I have really small feet but huge calves!!!!! Thank you
Ski boots are soooooo painful for me and you made me understand why
Used them yet? I’m close to purchasing and would like to hear your thoughts after use
I’m eagerly waiting for snow and then I’m heading out to the local ski places which are pretty mild but I’ll be able to tell right away if they are an improvement.
Well I couldn’t wait. Just ordered 2 pair of Antero’s from Apex for me and the wifey. Sure hope it was worth the price. Ouch.
@@skydiveradio I think it will be. They feel great on the feet which I would never had said about any boot I’ve tried before!
So basically, snowboard boot in a binding?
Bro how large is your calf? Still happy with these?
Fantastic review! Do you know the last(width) on those boot and chassis? I'm looking to get a size 28 as well but not sure if they'll fit since my feet are 120mm wide.
@Peter von Panda: Do you have any video where you're skiing?
Did you see any performance skier use this ? 😅 after trying to ski with this / I know why . They are for really beginner skiers or relax skier
Had you ever been to a professional bootfitter and had your boots custom fitted?
So it’s been a month the country has seen some snow have you had the opportunity to try them out???
These look like a great option for comfort for anyone! Cheers
One of the best videos for these boots. I wonder if the boots can bought and use the old shells when boots are worn out.
just asked Apex this today over the phone. if the boot or inner lining of the boot packs out you can buy a replacement from Apex for $100. amazing
Where’s the update video?
I can leg-press a small house )) so can my son - giving these ski boots a try - I am a snowboard instructor and a bunch of my fellow ski instructors ride in these boots. If it’s good for them it’s good enough for me. Fingers crossed! Last boots my son was in turned his feet blue after 2 runs. Wide feet and huge calf = apex ski boots
Sounds just like me! And no one has ever made anything I could comfortably fit in until now!
Skiers think it’s okay to be miserable in a pair of boots but if you choose to not be miserable, Skiers tell you to snowboard?
Just get the right boots for you, honestly i never had a issue in my life. 10h-12h hour days with 0 pain, whole doing jumps and stuff.
You never talked about the very important heel pocket and making sure your feet are all the way back and held solidly in the heel pocket
@petervonpanda did you do a follow up video? I can’t find it
I still think a properly trained boot fitter can do a better job at fitting ski boots than a snowboard boot clamped into a glorified highback binding with toe and heel welts...
This actually looks like the worst ski boot ive ever seen, its the opposite of what a ski boot should be.
I may have to contact atomic directly to see where I could try a pair of these.
correction Apex!!
THANKS for extensive review!!
I've been having the same issues i have big Cavs also i do snowboard but i want to ski also this looks great
Any update in use.
So if I wear 26.5, 104 last and a flex of 80 to 100, what will I be looking for in a apex shoe size?
It’s looks just like a snowboard boot with a redesigned binding that fits a ski ! Absolutely fantastic review ! I both ski and snowboard I wonder if the inner boot is transferable to a board binding ! In fact!!! I do not care this product is great iv just ordered a pair ! Hopefully 1boot fits a skis and a snowboards binding because this will absolutely reduces airport baggage fair !! Brilliant review !
My understanding is that you can use the inner boot as a snowboard boot.
Time for an update ? Keep up the good work!
Hi Peter awesome review - do you have a follow up
Video?
peter anyway you could give a messurement of your calfs i am trying to make sure these will fit before i drop 1k on them
Ski sandals?
That would be an awesome brand name.
08:05 great quote
does it have cushion for your sole?
They’re awesome. I have a pair, but they are definitely prohibitively expensive for the vast majority of people. $1000. For a ski boot.
I know this is an old video but how did they work out for the season? I’d love to try skiing again I have huge calves and ski boots killed me
I have skied in Aoex boots for 9 years and they work great, depending on where you usually ski you may be able to demo them which I would highly encourage you to. They are game changers, and this years boot is 2lbs lighter.
What is your calf circumference?
18.5 inches!
@@petervonpanda Mine, too. Please tell us how you like these while skiing?
Have you tried a nordica hf boot yet?
Follow up?
Can you please write your measurements on your calves, so I can make sure mine fit before I order one. thank you❤️
I swore I commented earlier about a code that gives makes the new model of boots $495 on the apex website, but it seems they were deleted?
The key to comfort is:
1) Do NOT buy boots by "ability".
It works. Try it.
You need the DAHU ski boots !!!! DAHU DAHU DAHU
The new boot this year is 2lbs lighter
They sure do stick it to you on the price, $900 wow!
Nice review. Can you also make more adjustments on the outer frame buckle? Looks like there are different mounting holes on the green pivot part of the buckle. Might help you dial in your lower and upper support.
That green pivot part is in 2 peaces and also glides in and out on the shaft there as well
That’s pretty cool lol if you snowboard too you’re set-- well, unless you use step ons…
Nice video you really showed everything good and you made me laugh a few times 🥴😅
Peace bro ham calves 🥹✌️
Haha, Key-Mod. Pete owns an AR.
No MLok anywhere tho

man your funny
You rock, Jacob!
You Don't want your two bottom buckles to be tight...idk if this guy knows enough about ski boots to make recommendations.
Really? Those aren’t ski boots at all. You need to practice patience and find an honest and true ski boot fitter.
Wish they made a Telemark NTN/tech chassis with front and rear fittings...and only having to take the frame off would be awesome for touring if you wanted to rest or wait til light...if I can ask, what is your widest calf measurement?
if you go to a legit boot fitter, your feet will never be in pain with normal ski boots.
Checking out hot chicks 🤣
omg calves...
These can't perform well. No way near enough support for even semi aggressive skiing. Might be good for some slow cruises down the greens.
