This movie is so relatable being a young black man, it’s like they want to put you in a box😂😂 I like sports, but I prefer a deep discussion about Game of Thrones, now House of the Dragon😂
The real deep discussion should be why Hollywood doesnt make movies about actual black royalty like the Empires of Kush,Songhai and the Asante instead of having black people watch fictional European fantasy 🤔
Jeffrey Wright plays the role of a main villain in The Last of Us Part II, and I hope they cast him in the HBO adaptation as well, with significant screentime, since Pedro Pascal's role will be smaller.
@@simonelauren6604Jeffrey Wright plays Isaac Dixon the leader of the Wolves organisation that Abby is a part of. He doesnt play a huge role in the games so i guess we’ll see what they will do with the character in live-action.
I just saw it on a mystery movie night, that surprisingly had a lot of people in the theater. Bruh, I thought this movie was amazing. I had no idea this was coming.
had a chance to see this at a screening a few weeks ago with a friend and it was surprisingly a delight. so many laughs from the audience. it deserves all the awards buzz
I saw this at a screening recently and I think this is definitely in the top 5 to win best picture it’s definitely a dark horse candidate, I don’t know if it will win, but it’s definitely getting nominated.
The ending felt like a 4th wall breaking movie but in a weird, new way. It's like the writer writing about the movie we just watched. He was like "that was good story telling huh?". I'm not really sure what she's talking about. Lol
Spoilers . . . . . . . I wanted Monk to have a better ending for his cause but I realized that's impossible to do when you are trying to get your film greenlit by the very people you want to take down so badly Its kind of a Trojan horse in that way cause even tho the movie frames monk sort of in the wrong I feel like the people behind the movie want you to disagree with that framing
This is the first "serious" movie review I've seen from this channel and I'm shocked by the high quality and thoughtfulness. I didn't realize Grace had this in her! Anyway, great film and very deserving of its Oscar nominations.
I hadn't even heard of this movie! Watched the trailer and now the review. Seems like a really charming movie. Will have to see it some time. I'm actually glad to hear about the family element in the movie, cause I don't know if just the book/career story presented in the trailer would fill a whole 2 hours effectively.
Thanks for the review Grace. I didn’t know it was going to be so good, I wish I could have seen it at TIFF. I’m definitely going to try and see it at the movies this December! Love so many in the cast!
This was regal theatres mystery film too . I didn’t see anyone leave my screening . I enjoyed what I saw but feel asleep at times as I was tired . I will check it out again to see what I missed .
Grace, do you realize that there are black Americans and African Americans that don’t like Tyler Perry? Way to miss the point of the film where Black people shouldn’t be put in a box. Also, it was a look comparison.
Regal has been doing Mystery Movie Mondays for close to if not over a year now. My theater for American Fiction was completely sold out, we only lost a couple of people who had little kids. (predominantly white location) Everyone was really vibing with the movie and at the roll of the credits, the crowd burst into applause and cheering.
I havent seen this movie but want to. But i have read about it. But this conversation isnt new for the black community!! Hip hop and hood culture is a commodity worldwide! Kpop has built an industry on it. So im glad to see diverse IP being adapted and not just plugging black actors in IP we didnt create nor want.
to the point of no black characters in the film who didn't come from a wealthy/privileged background: Lorraine and her partner. Granted, the film doesn't go too deep into their lives, but the are there.
Appreciate the review! I will always appreciate biting comedies and films that at least attempt to portray our community as nuance (as it is) and using commentary on the entertainment and publishing industry to do so. I hope it does call out that black americans who criticize other black content often lean into anti-blackness themselves. Now let's see if The Academy proves this film correct come nomination time.
Just got home from seeing this and the ending shot I caught but I’ve forgot the opening shot being referenced. Looks like I’ll have to watch it again, oh no!
Your review is exactly how I feel about the film. We went with our two teens. I went in thinking it’s a satire comedy but very quickly realize 60% of it was family drama. Very touching. I went back and forth from laughing to teary eyes all over the place. It’s a wonderful film with great and realistic writing. at times, I worry how my teens thought about the family dynamic and tragedy especially the younger one. She turned out to love it, from the cinematography to all the human drama. She said the film was just so pretty.
This movie fell a bit flat for me. It's two potentially great movies (a family drama and a satire) fighting for space, as a result its tonally all over the place.
I'm starting to think the big 3 (Barbie, Oppenheimer, Killers of Flower Moon) will underperform with wins. I can see them going for films like this, Poor Things, Past Lives and The Holdovers.
If you think this movie was disrespectful to Tyler Perry you should see the Boondocks episode on him. One of the funniest and meanest episodes of TV I’ve ever seen.
This movie is theatrical art and Oscar worthy, not like the make believe superheroes hanging from cables next to green screens. This is true art imitating life.
Not your fault, but I really wish you would have reviewed this more recently, when it debuted nationally. I went to see it yesterday, and this movie was AMAZING. The writing really stands out and you can tell by the performances in this movie that all the actors knew they were working with Gold.
I mean... White Chicks was a good example of comedies for commentary... It would be extremely easy to offend either groups but the movie managed to walk a thin line between comedy and offense. We all survived I guess.
Easily one of the best films of the year. like top 2. There's a movie coming out next year called "The American Society of Magical Negros" that aims to tackle a similar perspective. And it wishes it was half as smart as American Fiction. Can't wait to see that one do poorly.
The commentary around colorism I think is overshadowing the commentary about class. Jeffery Wright's character doesn't see color largely because it hasn't affected him due to his class. He was born to a wealthy family and is upset that they might have to give up their second home. He can afford not to see color because it affects the black people who don't benefit from the economic upbringing that he does.
I remember one of my best friends who’s white told me “Everything I know about Black people is from tv and show” and almost all of it was negative. I was shocked. We are still friends today but I will never forget that
Ironically if he ‘only’ wins for best screenplay instead of directing, it once more reinforces the message the film seems to me making. Artists of colour are still - in general - pushed aside for the main prizes and only ‘allowed’ to win the lesser awards.
This movie is so relatable being a young black man, it’s like they want to put you in a box😂😂 I like sports, but I prefer a deep discussion about Game of Thrones, now House of the Dragon😂
Raising a very artistic, techy black son that's into death metal I totally understand!
Me too. That's literally me 😂😂😂
I really hope this movie wins and Jeffrey Wright gets best actor!
I'm Mexican but I love Japanese movies
The real deep discussion should be why Hollywood doesnt make movies about actual black royalty like the Empires of Kush,Songhai and the Asante instead of having black people watch fictional European fantasy 🤔
Saw this Monday at the AMC Screen Unseen showing and I completely agree with Grace’s review. I definitely recommend.
Jeffrey Wright plays the role of a main villain in The Last of Us Part II, and I hope they cast him in the HBO adaptation as well, with significant screentime, since Pedro Pascal's role will be smaller.
❤
He will.
Who is he again? I remember Abby
@@simonelauren6604Jeffrey Wright plays Isaac Dixon the leader of the Wolves organisation that Abby is a part of. He doesnt play a huge role in the games so i guess we’ll see what they will do with the character in live-action.
@simonelauren6604 He plays Isaac, the leader of the W.L.F (the militia that controlled Seattle, and Abby and her group were part of).
This review made me more excited for this movie than I already was.
I just rewatched the Hunger Games with Jeffrey and man, he deserves it!! He has paid his dues! I loved him I’m WestWorld too.
Yes! I agree! Loved him in The Batman also!!! ❤
First season of WestWorld chef kiss
Love him since Casino Royale
@@vokasimid5330 Yes 🥰🥰
Congratulations to Jeffrey Wright. I wish him success.

Watched this at a Regal surprise movie and was delightfully surprised..a very good watch
Wright playing a Dominican drug lord in the Bronx in shaft was great acting
It was great fun to look up that role only after I watched American Fiction. He is an amazing talent !
The ending felt like a 4th wall breaking movie but in a weird, new way. It's like the writer writing about the movie we just watched. He was like "that was good story telling huh?". I'm not really sure what she's talking about. Lol
I saw it last Monday at Regal’s mystery movie and I LOVED IT. Sterling K Brown does fantastic

I saw the previews for this. It looked funny and smart. Love to see Jeffrey Wright get his moment in the sun
Thanks for all your hard work Grace.
This is so kind of you, thank you!
Saw it today. Possibly my favorite movie of the year
YAY! so excited for your review

Anyway, great film and very deserving of its Oscar nominations.
This awards season looks to be incredible this year!
Jeffery Wright played both Martin Luther King and Basquiat early in his career (and had a standout role in Shaft ) - give that man an Oscar
I hadn't even heard of this movie! Watched the trailer and now the review. Seems like a really charming movie. Will have to see it some time. Looking forward to watching this! Huge fan of Erika Alexander, such a comedic genius, excited to see her in another serious role!
Max from Living Single 😊
This was the Nov 27th AMC screen Unseen choice.
I really enjoyed it!
Saying hi from Walt Disney World in Orlando! Have a beautiful day Grace 🥳
Jeffrey Wright for Professor Xavier?
I hope it's a good and thoughtful film that people take the time to understand and not just hate
❤😊

Was awaiting your review! 🎉

Thanks for the review Grace ❤
If they believe they are the butt of a joke in watching a comedy then it's more of a reflection on who they are than on the film.
This movie is AMAZING.

Grace, thanks for sharing. 🤩🍿🎥
I never would've checked this out until your review, only because I live so far away from theaters here in Maine. 😉
Just got home from seeing this and the ending shot I caught but I’ve forgot the opening shot being referenced. Looks like I’ll have to watch it again, oh no!
I saw this movie at the Austin Film Festival and it was one of the best films I had seen in a long time!!!!!

I’ve never seen a trailer for this but I’m definitely recommending it to the fam.
I saw the trailer the other day and thought it looked great.and a must watch. Now your review made me that more excited to see it! 💕
this wasn't really on my radar but I'll put it on my list now. Thanks
I want to see this movie now! 😯😃
It looks hilarious! 😂❤
Great review! I recommended the film to a cinephile friend based on your review!
Thanks for the review grace, seems like a movie I would like but I never heard of it, wouldn’t of knew it existed without this
Very excited to see this movie
Me too! Looks really funny!
Its a movie not a lecture

Any one know when this film comes out in the uk
I can’t wait to watch this movie.
Hmm, might check this out! Thanks again!
I WILL WATCH AND OBSERVE THE WATCHER'S OSCAR CHANCES. WHAT IF REFERENCE!
Finally got around to seeing this. It was hilarious. I was not offended at all. More please.
I saw this advertise before Saltburn and I can’t wait to see it
This was a great movie! It was satirical, intellectual, and just well written.
Is Magazine Dream being released this year?
I don't think so.
they will wait til next year with the last films from Taratino, Eastwood and Frances Ford
I'm starting to think the big 3 (Barbie, Oppenheimer, Killers of Flower Moon) will underperform with wins. I can see them going for films like this, Poor Things, Past Lives and The Holdovers.
❤😊
A perfect movie as far as I'm concerned. Reminded me of Bamboozled. Has instantly become 1 of the most important black movies ever made.
WHY ARE YOU SHOUTING AT US?
Thanks for the review, I will be checking this out!
I'll have to catch this! Jeffrey Wright is a great actor.

Erika Alexander?! Living single actress??!?! 😮
I just saw this movie and loved it!!!!!!!!!
I absolutely loved this movie. One of my favorites of the year.
Omg you do that thing where you say the first few words of several sentences in a row without finishing any of them so many times in this video 😂
This was interesting. Can't wait to see the film.
Watching this review as I wait for the live that's coming. Might even catch this movie now that I'm watching the rave review!
I'm so excited to watch it!
This review made me excited
7:17 The book the movie is based on is called "Erasure."

I'm Definitely watching this movie after I watch this video

Grace is white? Haha I love her. Now I must watch this.
Jeffery Wright in The Last of Us Part 2 is amazing as well. Highly recommend you check it out
Top 5 best of 2023

🤔. GTK thanks Grace 👍
Looking at this years films, I actually don't see how Greta Gerwig makes the Best Director nom🤔
Its the guy from The Batman!
I remember one of my best friends who’s white told me “Everything I know about Black people is from tv and show” and almost all of it was negative. I was shocked. We are still friends today but I will never forget that
There's value in that statement, and in your sharing of it here. 💡
I don't think that is that racist bro, he was being honest with you. You showed him yourself and that is a positive role model for your White friend.
Ironically if he ‘only’ wins for best screenplay instead of directing, it once more reinforces the message the film seems to me making. Artists of colour are still - in general - pushed aside for the main prizes and only ‘allowed’ to win the lesser awards.
