I'm a brit who now calls Romania home. Love it and love the people...yes I love covrig too...secret is to wait and watch it coming out hot from the baking oven and then ask for one, so much better when they are hot, fresh and soft.

That influence that you call "Russian" it's Slavic, in fact! Most Slavic influence comes from the Bulgarians and the Serbians, not from the Russians.

Our "Da" comes from the latin word "ita" wich changed over time in "ida" to the "da" we now use. :)

This is the most accurate point of view about Romania that I have ever heard/read! Anyone who wants to come to Romania should listen to it!
Romanian language is almost 80% of Vulgar Latin language, (vulgar=spoken, popular), plus 20%:
    1. Slavic words (Serbian, Bulgarian: calorifer=warm-water heating, Russian: a iubi - ljublu=to love),
    2. Greek words (democrație from demos-people+kratos-power, medical terms, science names like: zoologie - zoo+logos-word/science, arheologie - archais-old+logos-word/science),
    3.Turkish words (cișmea=fountain, sarma=main dish, peșcheș=money tribute),
    4. Dacian words (varza=cabbage, barza=stork, brad=fir),
    5. German words,
    6. Hungarian words.
All of these words are influences from our ancient neighbours: Austro-Hungarian Empire, Ottoman/Turkish Empire, Russian Empire and countries under their domination (Serbia, Bulgaria).
Old Greek and old Slavic languages are still learnt in Theological High Schools and Theological Faculty in Romania and Latin language (one of those 8 "dead" languages în Europe) is still studied in 7th/8th and 9th grade in school/high school. Our bible comes from Greece and it was written with cyrillic alphabet in ancient times. Romania is a "new" country (its borders finalized btw. 1856/1944) and its written language formed btw. 16th and 19th century.
But many of the European countries are "new" formed states: Italy and Germany, both formed as states in 1871.

There are some ruins that can be seen in the west part of Ploiesti - close to Gara de Vest, where Rafinaria Columbia used ro be in WW2. I used to run around there when I was a kid.

The thing with the candles is a little bit different. They actually bring it every year by plane from Jerusalem where it is supposed to light up by itself and then it is spread throughout the country.

10:39 the romanian word for "yes" (DA) doesn't come from russian language.
the word "yes" in vulgar latin was "ITA" pronounced "IDA" (ida).
That is the origin of the romanian word for yes.

I used to live in Bucharest 1989-1995, used to wait early in the morning for bread and milk. The best bread…then of course They say Romania is the little Paris, but than again France buys Romanian grapes and makes its wines, labels it as theirs. You’re welcome.

While its true that Romanian has a substantial Slavic influence, the word Da does have a bit of similarity with latin as well in the sense that you could use "ita" to say yes. Which could evolve into ida / da. It also could be a slavic influence, or the truth could be in the middle. I guess "Da" was the practical outcome either way.

romanian language comes from the same place as latin…in other words, the latin and romanian language are sisters, because they are coming from the same place. And that “da” from the russian language is a borrou word from romanian language to russian, not the other way around.
